We use despite to show that whatever it may be the result would not be affected by it. So in this example what despite is showing is that even if she is lazy that didn't affect her on her exam so instead of saying failed you should say passed. Despite her laziness, she passed her exam.
Another example could be, I still enjoyed the week despite the weather.
