    Geez I wish someone had Video'd this show. I met John in London 1973 & found him to be amiable & just a nice person ! We shared a joint (privately) & a drink at the Red Lion in Dawes Road Fulham, no one butting in or bugging him. Treasured memories. A few months later I flew back to Durban South Africa & never got the chance to speak to him again. RIP beautiful person & great musician !

      His step mother lives on the Isle of Islay(inner Hebrides Scotland) as at this time so I did.Anyway she was a lovely old lady and she knew that I used to know I smoked the green so she asked me could I get some for her step son who was due to come and visit her.I did and she gracefully thanked me,she said she would introduce me to him when he arrived and we could have a smoke together.Her step son arrived it turned out to be John(what a legend)but from then on in we became good friends and every time he came over we privately went for a smoke and we went for a pint or twenty,he would always play a song for me.The last time I saw him he played me “the dealer”.He moved back to Ireland and he gave me an open ticket to go and visit him,so long as I would get him some more of that green wee man(that was what he always called mej God Bless him the Big fella RIP my special friend.The is never a days goes by without me having a joint and I always raise it to the heavens and salute him.

      I have the chance to see John Martyn often on the 70's. He was always great !
      (Except one time, he fell on his knees after ten minutes. Too much drunik etc... I had traveled 500 km to see him in a festival 😩). I never heard him play Over the Hill. Lucky you are ! But, he plays always Solid Air, even if he complained about the people who asked him the song 😊.

    Wonderful!...Particularly enjoyed Seven Black Roses....one afternoon back in the 1970s I visited my pal Jim Gilbert in a West End Glasgow flat, during a period of high unemployment for us both...after the statutory premilinaries of a jazz cigarette and cup of coffee..Jim showed me what he'd been working on, for a month on his Martin - John's seven black roses - he madea reasonable stab at the first minute or so then stopped saying he couldnt work out the next bit...without thinking of the consequences I said "hang on Jim Ive seen him do that , he uses a stretch capo and slides up the fretboard."...Jim put down his guitar and lay on the floor howling, while I was in tears of laughter...for a full five minutes!..wonderful times...

      Yes, wonderful time 🌌 ! I think that to play Seven Black Roses, you need a good old capo.

    Over the hill. Great intro :) EDIT: As I listen 5 years later, I love the cheeky Scouse woman who perks up throughout the show. And the crying baby interrupting Certain Surprise - if you put headphones on it really is like you are transported to that foggy night in 1980! Thanks for the upload!

    I know he was half-Scottish and spent some of his youth in Glasgow but he was born in Surrey and spent most of his life in England which makes the Scots accent more puzzling. Did he feel more Scots than English like Rod Stewart who was also 50/50. The difference being that Rod has never adopted a fake Scots accent. A sweet little mystery indeed

    • @Stringvibes
      @Stringvibes 6 лет назад

      He spent most of his life in Scotland actually - other than the period 1967-1980.

    i love John's music and have most of his albums . This is a memorable and unique gig and how wonderful it must have been to have witnessed it. BUT! and I have to say this: listening to John talk in his natural accent makes me wonder why he adopted the FAKE Scottish accent later on in his career. Here he sounds utterly home counties English but listen to him several years later and he is talking as though he was born in the east-end of Glasgow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why? Does any one have any idea about this??

      Blair MacEwan Crosbie How very presumptuous of you

    • @blairmacewancrosbie8646
      @blairmacewancrosbie8646 6 лет назад +3

      There is nothing presumptious about my question.It is a genuine enquiry as to why John decided later in his life to adopt a billy Connolly-esq Scottish accent. I suppose the real question is this: why would any one want to pretend they were Scottish? Perhaps it was sort of regression to his childhood which he spent in Glasgow? If your comment is the best you can come up with then I would suggest you take up finger- painting or something similar that would not stretch your obviously limited intellectual capacity. It also concerns me that you as like many others are not brave or honest enough to use their real names on YT. Troll.

    • @Stringvibes
      @Stringvibes 6 лет назад +5

      John was brought up in Glasgow with holidays down south during the year. He only spent 1967-80 living in England after which he moved home to Scotland. The double accent thing is far more common than you may think, for kids of divorced parents who are not of the same nationality.
