Personally, I have found the reduction in those coming forward for the monastic life, in 'Western' Christianity, a source of sadness. I was conceived in Elgin, Moray, close to PLUSCARDEN ABBEY, an absolute jewel of a restored Benedictine House (though they wear 'white'; owing to their peculiar history); and spent my adolescent years close to ST AUGUSTINE's ABBEY, Ramsgate, in Kent (now closed as an Abbey). It has always been comforting to know that some 'religious' have devoted their lives to intercessionary prayer for the World: and I have enjoyed the company of the monks at MUCKNELL (Anglican) and DOWNSIDE (RC; also recently closed). It may be that there is no longer a role for Monasticism in the West: hospitals and education now being the business of society, generally. Perhaps they have served their practical purpose, and their job is done. But who is doing the praying?
Dear Prof., Happy Christmas! I'll include a small considertation for Mt. St. B. I call on young men (and women O.Cist) who look to the "why" more than the "what" - to consider a life of search, not one of mere randomness (= pragmatism). Life is not chance, but subjective epoché. And within this epoché, the "why" dissolves into true hope (cp. David Steindl-Rast O.Cist, passim).
Professor, can I start by declaring, I am not a religionists,, nor member of any donation , but I am a believer in the same god as them ,,, I practice mantra based meditation, among mantras I use is a Gregorian chant , it is on ytube ( Gregorian chant, AVE Maria , the channel is. eternal spirit ) it's repetitive, about every minute, I have found this chant excellent at achieving a good meditation, however it's in Latin and iv no clue what it mean ,, do you know this chant means , not the words , just the " meaning" of it, I assume it's praising god or giving thanks for something ,,, incidentally my late mum , milked 250 dairy cows twice a day six days a week , for 55 years, but as far as I'm aware only drank beer lol 🏴 happy healthy peace ✌️

My great-niece was murdered by a colleague in Coalville & her body dumped in countryside near this abbey. Such a contrast of good & evil in a place.
