Wow! This studio is going to be amazing! It must be a really fantastic feeling to have been able to build it up from scratch, all to your own needs and preferences 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I’m sure it’s going to be amazing! Really lookings forward to follow the process. After closing down my old studio I’m building a new studio at home. It’s not going to be half as nice as yours but I’m pretty pleased with how it’s turning out 😊
Exciting times Paul! Regarding an upright piano, I suggest you try and track down a 1920’s-1930’s era Richard Lipp & Sohns. Piano tuners & techs rave about them for their build quality and tuning stability, and players rave about them for their depth of tone & character. I own a large Richard Lipp & Sohns upright from 1928 and would never part with it. A stunning piano that puts most modern uprights to shame.
Amazing journey, love this. I don't know why I thought that the ceiling height would have been a bit taller, especially for drums. Love this though built to last that is for sure.
was thinking the same. it's a beautiful building but damn shame that ground level ceiling wasn't a meter or so higher... still great work tho and with proper treatment will be a great space i'm sure
Looks fantastic Paul! QQ - Are you having a room or extra floor built upstairs? Noticed the pitched roof and the windows up there but couldn't see any stairs (At least this stage) Wondered if you were putting an office or even a booth up there? Looking forward to the next video.
Hello, very impressive! I am considering doing something similar, but then a room-in-a-room: control room + live room, newly built in a large barn. I have a question: when designing your setup, what acoustics did you take into consideration? Especially how you got to the room size (ratio's) is of interest to me. Thanks!
Looks absolutely beautiful. What do you plan to put in a "machine room" in 2019? Mine has just become storage space, because nothing I have makes noise anymore. I sure do remember the days of racks of stuff grinding away, creating a racket, though.
Thanks Lee! Just the very noisiest stuff - TC6000, the Grace controller unit, power stuff, not a huge amount. The Apollos are going in the main room, they are super quiet.
A MANSION of a studio! But I bet your patchbay (with all the gear in it) is still more expensive. Anyways thanks for sharing this process, it’s really interesting to watch!
I love your videos Paul. Thank you for sharing all of your knowledge and uses of your libraries. I do have question for you, Spitfire related and off topic of this video. I don't know how else to reach you or Christian, so I am doing it this way and on you FB page. My apologies if this seems a bit inappropriate. But here is my Question: Hi Paul, You don't know me personally but I am a loyal Spitfire Audio customer and plan to be for as long as you guys remain in business releasing excellent libraries. I sent out a request to the Support team with a response I was hoping to be a bit more on the positive side. I would like to transfer a few of my libraries to another user. I own many of your libraries right now and plan on keeping the ones I use all the time. I have handful of libraries that I just simply don't use AT ALL. Right off the top of my head they are Albion One, Iceni, Kanga Harp, Joby Burgess Percussion and Masse. I have many others that I use religiously, as you can see on my account page at brentsmith50@gmail.com. I know you guys are concerned about this STILL BEING on my hard drives. I literally DO NOT use them and am eventually simply going to delete them forever because I have to make room for newer libraries. How can I prove it to you? You tell me. I have 2 computers a slave and a master. That's it. I am the sole and ONLY composer. I am part of a Group of beginner Trailer Music composers and some of the folks either cannot afford to buy high level libraries like yours. I would like to offer them mine IF I CAN. Can we come to some kind of agreement, maybe. If so, just please delete anything that we agree on from my account and your customer facing portal. Maybe you have an idea on how I might prove to you that these libraries no longer exist anywhere on my system. I know it's hard for you, but I am well meaning and certainly do not want to burn a bridge with you guys because I plan on continuing business with you. I know it's a long message. Sincerely, Brent Smith
Why you didn't left open space to have 'more air' aove the studio rooms? It seems that you had a grate opportunity to have much better acoustic performnace with 2 levels instead of 1...
I'm not sure if you've answered this or not, but I didn't see anything in the comments. What type of insulation are you using between the inside and outside walls?
@@PaulThomsonMusic Awesome, thanks Paul. The studio looks amazing by the way! I can't wait to see more videos, hopefully production and recording sessions.
It's been super interesting to binge-watch this build. Thanks very much for making this, Paul!
Thanks for sharing Paul, I'm a sucker for these kind of videos. Loved the Spitfire build videos.
Thanks Will - lots of tech detail coming in the next one!
That is exciting for certain! Thank you, Paul, for taking us along in this fanstatic ride!
Thanks Marco!
Wow! That's one of the most beautiful studio exterior I've ever seen! Really like the "old barn" style and I'm looking forward to see the inside
Thanks Iain!
Wonderful to see the progress! Very exciting.
Thanks Chris!
Looks stunning!
This is super interesting, thanks so much for taking us on this journey with you Paul!
Thanks Evan!
Excellent and fascinating. Thanks again for making the clips Paul. Very much appreciated.
For a minute there I though that was 5 boxes of UA Apollos!! Studio is looking amazing Paul! Can’t wait to see it finished!
Thanks Sam! Now 5 really would be OTT...
Looks great! Would also love a video tour of your farm and to meet the animals. Weirdly I find that more aspirational than all the cool gear...
Thanks Lawrence! haha.. great idea - will note that for a future one! Have to work out how to tie it into music somehow!
Paul Thomson Well the Beach Boys did Pet Sounds.....;0)
Great stuff! I'm really looking forward to seeing how you chose to approach the floor covering and the acoustic treatment of the walls and ceiling...
Thanks! we'll be looking at that in the next one!
Wow! This studio is going to be amazing! It must be a really fantastic feeling to have been able to build it up from scratch, all to your own needs and preferences 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks Peter - it really is - after 25 years of cobbling stuff together all over the place finally building my own is pretty cool!
I’m sure it’s going to be amazing! Really lookings forward to follow the process.

Totally amazing!!! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Alain!
NICE! How exciting!!!!🤩
Thanks Yash!
Woo was just thinking the other day when the next update was coming out. Looking great!
Thanks Donovan - should be weekly from here on!

Awsome!
Thanks Moz!
This is fantastic, thanks for sharing!
To paraphrase Paul: I'm very excited about this!
These are wonderful. I could be wrong but it looks bigger than say, "a shed"? ;)
A little!! Thanks!
Thank you Paul, this is absolutely fascinating! Would you mind giving us an approximative idea of the cost to build such a nice studio?
Amazing journey, love this. I don't know why I thought that the ceiling height would have been a bit taller, especially for drums. Love this though built to last that is for sure.
Will be approx 2m50 in the end I reckon - we've got restrictions on height in this part of the world so had to be conservative!
@@PaulThomsonMusic oh for the total building?
was thinking the same. it's a beautiful building but damn shame that ground level ceiling wasn't a meter or so higher... still great work tho and with proper treatment will be a great space i'm sure
Also, I hope it's just the lens you were using, but how high are the ceilings in the main room?
currently 2m70, but that will reduce slightly once the floor / ceiling treatments are in.

Holy crap that's an amazing building. I can't even imagine the cost of building something like that... 😮
Thanks Brian - you don't want to imagine...

A compelling watch. What happened at about 1 minute in, was that a video mis edit or a building change? Looking forward to the technical installation.

Are we paying you guys too much? ;)
haha!! Just enough Clay. :D
British Fall? is this from last year? Looks great BTW....
Thanks Pete! I meant winter lol.. this was from about Nov - Feb!
Very nice work Paul. Is there an upstairs for storage or secondary use?
Thanks Hired! Yes storage upstairs.
Why didn't you go for non parallel walls and a higher ceiling for better treatment? Simply a reason of cost?
Like a little kid in a candy store gear gear gear!😁😍

Hi Alex - its mainly rockwool, but on the back wall behind the monitor position there are additional treatments - various rubber membranes etc.

Neil Finn has an old Richard Lipp & Sons upright in his studio. Check it out here in this studio session:
