It seems the jury put artistry at the top. Never mind her facial expressions and at times questionable moments - there are so many great qualities in her playing that are not easy to come by: her luscious sound, ability to draw out a true cantilena, natural rubato and a myriad of different characters at her command.
The jury had loved her from the first stage. (me too) For whom, listening to her only in finale it could be surprise, that she won. I have heard her from the very beginning and I was confused by the concerto as well.
I believe Ms Maeda focused most of her energy on higher level aspects, which may also be highly valued by the judges. However, her sound and coordination are on beginner to intermediate level to my impression, apart from intonation and technical matters others mentioned. This is not seen on other finalists.
I thought so too… she has a lot of talent and potential, and it’s truly remarkable. But I wonder if a gold medal should have been awarded this year at all given the standard of the competition.
I do appreciate with her passion in music and certain level of maturity on interaction with the orchestra. It would be great if that can be backed by stronger skills and solid sound.
The piece in the intro is Wieniawski polonaise brillante for violin and orchestra op21. I believe the violinist playing this particular recording is Kaja Danczowska but I could be wrong
Because I was on her concert and she both made us cry and laugh. She has a true soul, not only as a musician but simply as a human. She can translate God's music to people's harts.
Because she is engaging the audience. Yes agreed there were mistakes here and there, but at the same time you can play the notes perfectly and still sound uninteresting ( boring )
