I used to raise Giant Chinchilla rabbits for meat. I foraged 90% of their food. I raised them indoors as a project to prove that rabbits can be raised in an apartment in a city. 1 Buck and 4 Doe. 400 lbs. of meat in 1 year.
Amen to that. What really needs to happen is far better enforcement and oversight in the Humane Methods of Livestock Slaughter Act and the inclusion of small stock like rabbits, poultry, and fish to ensure the quality of care is far improved. If you eat meat - buy from a small producer like the owner of this video who really cares for his stock.
Yes , veganism started because of the mistreatement of livestock in these companies , death is unavoidable to these animals , but i`m glad he is very kind to them.
A humane way to kill does exist. Several humane ways, as a matter of fact. A humane death is a painless death, and painless deaths are very much achievable.
Love the videos and great ideas and info! Just bought my 13.25 acre homestead and will be moving this weekend. I can't wait to get back to my roots! Your videos remind me of things I had forgotten, as well as teach me new things. Keep 'em comin'! God bless you and yours from Southern Indiana!
I have just stumbled upon this video after watching your other videos about the wire shelving cages (which we plan to use with our own rabbits when we move them into an actual building). Sorry that I am commenting on an older video. However, I do want to mention one thing about your statement of the New Zeland. There are actually a few varieties, often considered different breeds, of New Zealand. Your doe is a New Zealand White, probably the most common and desired ones out there. But there are also NZ Black, NZ Blue (fairly new), NZ Red (rarely seen in the US), and NZ Broken. Whites are the most desired of the NZ varieties because when butchered you can not see their fur as much on the meat like the other varieties. In reality, NZ Whites were a happy accident and just started popping up in litters of mainly red kits (when NZ Reds where commonly seen in the US). Now they have become a very popular variant, and is often the commonly known appearance of this lovely breed of rabbit. I breed NZ Black and Brokens, but wish to add a few whites to my herd soon as I just love the variety. I do have a carrier of the gene, a lovely charlie black doe, and am hoping to get them! Anyway, great videos. They have helped me a lot in the improvement of my own rabbit housing and care. Seeing this one makes me want to get Mini Rexes to breed for pets, and they are a goregous breed.
yall got some great rabbits- and the ones we got from you are doing amazingf and they are not just big but huge- maybe when it warms up a bit we can get a video of ours to show also- love and huggs...
I raised rabbits for 15 yrs. I had American Chinchilla, Californians, Mini lop, new zelands, dwarf... And darn if I can't remember the black n white, (white blaze in face....) it's been a while. I win the rabbit Royalty contest for 3 yrs at county and 4-h fair. It is a general knowledge test about the parts of a rabbit, and general care.
sure wish I lived in your neck of the woods I would be spending a lot of time there your living my dream brother God Bless you and your kin tell your next one stay warm and safe ..... Bob
Love the assortment you have. Can't believe how cute that last one is. Hopefully soon I can get some rabbits started here. It's obvious your family loves them all.
Great Vid John. I love the style pens you made with the hideaway room for them. And the black champagne is gorgeous. I would like to get ahold of some Champagnes and Flemish.
Hop-poop, hop-poop is what my house rabbits did. Nice collection John. When I was younger I had a couple rabbits we house trained. They finally got to be to much when I discovered they were peeing on my cassette tape collection under the bed. We lived in the mountains in Utah at the time and they would love to run around in the snow and then come to the door to be let in. Rabbit's are very trainable, except the hop-poop and peeing thing.
I know these are your older videos and you probably won’t see this but I just been going through the list and catching up as a semi new (about a yr) sub. Hope that’s ok? I don’t always comment but I do “like” and watch the commercials. Those are some BIIIIG bunbuns! They’re all really cute even the meat rabbits who, btw are as big as my dogs! LOL I’m fairly new to all of this and am interested in rabbits as a meat source. Your channel is VERY helpful. I do grow a garden and have done that most of my life. My grand parents dad and uncles were cattle farmers and my granny always had chickens. I’ve just not done it all for myself. Now that I’m disabled and can’t work I gotta find ways to make it. You’re channel really helps encourage me as well as gives me the knowledge I need. Plus you’re a dang good cook! LOL I tried your cinnamon roll recipe and “sweet heaven help me,” they were AHHHMAAAAZING!! LOL So, TFS. I really appreciate what you do to help others. God Bless you and yours ~Lisa
J they are all gorgeous.....I have never seen such a huge rabbit as your flemish giant!!! Your wee one in the house is so adorable she looks little a stuffy toy lol
John, did you say that you build these hutches? Do you have a vid showing us how you do it and the sources for sturdy, good wire rolls and such? I would love to see that if you have it. Thanks.
My buddy builds them. We use the cage wire from our local feed store, that seems to hold up well, and we use scrap wood for the boxes and frames. We might make a video about it this summer...............................J
Your rabbits are beautiful. Anyone can tell they are very well cared for. What is the best food pellets and grass for them? Also what do you use for bedding in the breeder boxes?
Those are some very nice looking rabbits. Eddie is just gorgeous. Champagne D'Argents are hard to come by here. Lots of the Creme D'Argents around, but I always thought the Champagnes were prettier.
The little black Mini Rex is called a Black Otter. One of my fave colors in Mini Rex and Netherland Dwarfs. Also your Dwarf Hotot is pronounced Hoe-Tote, though I do find it adorable how you call em hot tots :)
Thanks John. Nice video. Good intro to raising rabbits. Anyone looking to increase their self-reliance and self-sufficiency should investigate raising rabbits. New Zealand White is pretty much the standard for meat production, but other breeds should not be ignored. Champagne D'Argent are fantastic meat rabbits with that silver fur, too, which once was highly sought after. There are, also, Creme D'Argent which are a very pale yellowish color with an orange undercoat, and good meat producers. Californian and Florida White would round out my top five choices for meat production. Storey's Guide to Raising Rabbits, 4th Edition, by Bob Bennett, which you can get at Amazon - or, perhaps, at your local library - is a good, concise and well written place to start learning the how-to of rabbit raising.
Watching your videos like a villain now. W/this one, I am curious: Had you ever slaughtered a rabbit before you began this lifestyle? If not, how did you learn to do it? What were the challenges? What were some of the mistakes you made (if any)? How do you like to cook it? How long does it keep? Do you freeze it? Sorry I'm all over the place but we're looking for the best way(s) to step slowly into the homesteading lifestyle. So far I'm leaning towards rabbits and goats and I love your videos. Thanks so much!
+Dorothy Validus I notice your question was not answer so I wanted to partially take a crack at it because I find it interesting. I've grew up in western MA around lots of farms and know plenty of people who live this very way including myself to some extent though more on orchards etc. I would have to say that he ^ probably grew up on a farm or around them. I highly doubt for some reason that he grew up in Brooklyn and "decided to learn to live off the grid lol. So here's my belief/opinion "homesteading" isn't a lifestyle it's life. It's actual real life. Until the big oil industries and big business came along this is how you live and survive. You're asking how to get into this ask yourself how did you get out? Society dragged you out of it with big war profiteering oil business and rob you in labor and taxes. Now you don't know how to live. They didn't teach you that in school did they? This was no accident. Anyway it's hard to kill a rabbit for the first time but they are an animal that has lived and died in it's place in the foodchain for who knows...millions of years? Learn to do it and do it. I think more people should learn to be self sufficient in case they get us in so much debt we become a 3rd world country...which will happen if it keeps going the way things are now. What are we at -20 trillion now? Such a big number people don't seem to believe it. Well believe it...that's a crap load of money and we owe it because they spent our money to fight their wars. Anyway imagine all the people who've never slaughtered a chicken before because someone else does it for them...imagine them getting turned away from the grocery store. I don't want them all showing up at my door. If you don't know how to do this you are lacking basic life skills and are far too dependent on the state.
I raise dwarf hotot. I'm surprised you have one with all the meat rabbits. Love your videos. Have you tried raising standard hotots? They are just as beautiful and have the long bodies you are looking for, they do have a tendency to be less commercial sometimes.
Ur mini rex color is sable.. lol I used to be a rabbit judge in colorado. Nice video brother. Cross a french lop with a Flemish giant and u will have pounds and pounds of meat!! If u have any questions on rabbits, hit me up. I love chatting eith people about them
love your videos man, keep it up!! got question for you..is it ok to breed rabbits that have same dad but diff mom? what about fasther to daughter, mother to son? thanks in advance for your knowledge
I need help. Since this past summer I have had horrible luck with my rabbits. Last night heavy winds brought in a cold front that only lasted through the night and my 8 bunnies died. They had just finished growing their thin layer of fur. Do they need heat lamps in the winter and air conditioning in the summer ?: I am so close to giving up on them because they seem to be too delicate for me to breed and I am not going to have an electric bill just to be successful. What works without having a larger electric bill ?
Rabbits dont need air conditioning in the summer or heat in the winter. I've raised rabbits in all climate. What they do need is shade in the summer and plenty of clean fresh water. In the winter it is really important to have a draft free area with plenty of hay or straw for the Doe to build a nest in. Winters can be hard, but it can be done if you follow these simple rules. With that being said pick your breading dates, try not to have litters in the coldest part of winter.here that is the month of Febuary.
BeaverRick Then I guess the only problem were the strong winds. I don't think it even got down to freezing but the winds were about 20 mph .They were well covered with the doe's fur and hay in the nesting box .
I agree with BeaverRick, most of my rabbits are in the barn out of the wind, and the ones that are outside I make sure they have plenty of hay for nesting and cover them with a tarp when it is cold, especially when it is raining or snowing out. Good luck bro, dont give up I am sure you can get it figured out...........................................J
The mini rex that you were holding, if she has a brownish color around her eyes, ears, and belly and she white underneath on her belly, she could be an black otter, but if she only has the brown around the ears then she might be a cross between a solid black and a black otter.
I'm STILL looking for a French Angora breeding pair. Not many around but they are a great triple purpose rabbit, big enough for butchering, docile enough for pets and wool to spin and make yarn. I'm gonna keep hunting!
my husband and I are thinking of getting into raising rabbits for both meat and pets...We are just curious what your rabbits diet is for both meat and pet rabbits.. also for the dwarf rabbit you have inside as a pet...Thanks.
oh man turned on the close caption and when you said rabbits it turned the word into rabiesologiest ahahahah good video brother god bless hope the weather is good in the hills
Oh wow9 10 or 11 lbs for a Flemish😂 mines 24lbs! He is not a breeder just a pet. I raise holland lops for show and pet but my Flemish is just my baby! He was my first rabbit I could actually take care of with ought my parents. I am 14 and I LOVE raising Hollands! I take mine to shows and sell them to show homes!
i raise flemish/cali mix rabbits and pure flemish and im going to mix in Newzealand this summer! i do the colony thing lol for me it works but i like your set up!!
if ur rabbit is spayed or neutered there should never be a smell, unless you aren't keeping the litter box clean, if you don't it's pretty much equivalent to pooping and peeing in a toilet and never flushing.
My dad raised rabbits for meat when I was a kid. We always had Dutch and Dutch mix. Great eating. I just wonder what it costs per month in feed now. I'd like to get some...............I love eating fried rabbit.
Thanks! You are one of my favorite rabbit you tubers. Have u ever breed a cinnamon rabbit? (Chinchilla doe, Californian buck) my house bunny Winston, (or Winnie) is one! Thanks again❤️🐰
Hey John! I posted a video last night from my trail cam. We caught a bobcat on it by the barn. Do you have problems with them down there? I understand they are on the endangered species list here in Ohio. How do you handle them? We are going to be putting chickens out there, and I don't want to until I figure out what to do with the bobcats.
bobinmissouri I'm calling them. We've also got a black bear roaming the property. Saw a huge pile of bear scat about 8 feet from the barn a few weeks ago. Am hoping to get it on the trail cam too. Saving up to buy a second on this spring, when the bear should be more active.
bobinmissouri Every since we knew about the bear, I've been saying I am going to get a bear rug for the cabin lol. You aren't allowed to shoot them unless you are being threatened. Just knowing it's there is a threat lol
I have not had to deal with any bobcats here at my place, I am not sure what to do about them. If it were me I would probably call the local game warden to see what they would recommend. Wish I could be more help.....................J
Well, it's less about masking than it is about how those 5 genes for the two colors are expressed. Some show incomplete dominance in the proteins that are produced by the sequence. It's certainly a lot more complicated than the fruit flies I studied in college.
I don't know if you've had people say this before but it's ho-toe or o-toe weird French I know lol. Thanks for you awesome vids I've been binging them.
harlequin colored rabbits can be female too. my doe is harlequin colored. Shes a rex/california cross. Her name is pilgim because she was born on thanksgiving day 2 years ago. All had thanksgiving day themed names lol. im planning on raising lionheads and lionhead crosses too. She was just bred to my lionhead buck a couple days ago. Im saving up for a lionhead doe.
Love your videos man--very informative, and a great resource--am a Canadian living in Colombia and am thinking of raising some meat rabbits---Keep up the great work
I love how you raise both meat and pet rabbits! Very inspiring. Thank you for taking all the time to make these videos :)
Two football touchdown hands up brother. Thank you for sharing with us. Thumbs up from this granny always. Enjoy your weekend.

I am sorry but a humane way to kill doesn't exist, it's just to ease yourself.

Great video, very informative, for your meat rabbits do you prefer the cross breeds or the pure? Which crosses are the best?
Katherine Taylor I think my favorite is the New Zealand, California cross..................J
Thank you very much, but I will try that.
+jnull0 as a kid my favorite cross was the new zealand buck on the flemish giant does - babies were big enough in half the time to butcher and or sell

Meat rabbits?

Hi there
Have a good day
Keep on c
Thanks for the lesson. I recognized a couple of your breeds, but didn't know what they were called.
Awesome video....

I dont know why I keep having to subscribe. I think you tube hates me.lol I love the little bitty rabbit. Thanks for the info on the different breeds.
Oh that little Bun Bun at the end is so cute! I am gonna have to get me one of them!
you are great to you animals
Thanks for a really awesome video. You rock!

My dad raised rabbits for meat when I was a kid. We always had Dutch and Dutch mix. Great eating. I just wonder what it costs per month in feed now. I'd like to get some...............I love eating fried rabbit.
great video
there soo beautiful! so hard to watch when there soo cute and soo delicious
Thanks! You are one of my favorite rabbit you tubers. Have u ever breed a cinnamon rabbit? (Chinchilla doe, Californian buck) my house bunny Winston, (or Winnie) is one! Thanks again❤️🐰
I think the mini Rex has an otter coloring from the looks of it :) not a rabbit expert, just a rabbit lover ;)
WOOOO THE LADYS!!! 😂
Hey John! I posted a video last night from my trail cam. We caught a bobcat on it by the barn. Do you have problems with them down there? I understand they are on the endangered species list here in Ohio. How do you handle them? We are going to be putting chickens out there, and I don't want to until I figure out what to do with the bobcats.
we hunt them here in Missouri check with your conservation office and see if you can trap them maybe use a live trap and move them to a new home
bobinmissouri I'm calling them. We've also got a black bear roaming the property. Saw a huge pile of bear scat about 8 feet from the barn a few weeks ago. Am hoping to get it on the trail cam too. Saving up to buy a second on this spring, when the bear should be more active.
The Off Grid Homestead At St. Bernard Acres oh going to get yourself a bear rug lol
bobinmissouri Every since we knew about the bear, I've been saying I am going to get a bear rug for the cabin lol.
I still can't believe all those varieties come from genes expressing only two colors.
Well, it's less about masking than it is about how those 5 genes for the two colors are expressed. Some show incomplete dominance in the proteins that are produced by the sequence. It's certainly a lot more complicated than the fruit flies I studied in college.

You could write several doctorate works about rabbit genetics. Fascinating animals no matter how you look at them.
Gona have to steal a name you said Bon Bon. does your mini rex get soar hacks if so and tips to deal with it?
J is so cute with that hot tot- I want to make a meme of him saying "little bitty ears."
Hello Jnull0. Are you able to ship rabbits that you sell?
can you breed netherland dwarf siblings?
I don't know if you've had people say this before but it's ho-toe or o-toe weird French I know lol. Thanks for you awesome vids I've been binging them.
