Gilles de Rais' supposed love for Jeanne and his inability to cope with her loss was implied to be the cause of his downward spiral into financial crisis, the occult, murder, and depravity. That may be a romantic dramatization of the events surrounding Rais, but rationalizing his acts is natural, and grief is a powerful impetus of change.
