Understanding UAV Communication - Kalyan Sriram & Vincent Wang

  • In the past years, increasing complexity in UAV systems has led to more advanced flight controllers and coprocessors, smart sensors and actuators, ground control stations, and the need to reliably communicate between them in real-time. This has led to new technologies such as Cyphal and DroneCAN, as well as new applications for established protocols like MAVLink. However, this has also led to fragmentation in the ecosystem and confusion for both hobbyists and professional adopters. Kalyan Sriram and Vincent Wang compare various protocols, explain their history, and provide guidance to prospective adopters. They share their own experiences - positive and negative - working with these protocols, tools, and hardware. They also introduce newer innovations including Ethernet and LTE and what advances they may provide to the ecosystem. Note: This talk was originally accepted for the Developer Summit 2022 (Austin), but we were unable to present it due to a presenter contracting COVID-19. However, it has been significantly changed and updated based on new development.

    Kalyan Sriram is an undergraduate student pursuing Computer Engineering at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. He has previously interned at the Dronecode Foundation and Zubax Robotics (the creators of UAVCAN and Cyphal). As a former founding member of the AmadorUAVs high school club, he has multiple years of experience building hardware and software for autonomous multirotors. His interests include embedded systems, 3D printers, and open source software.
    Vincent Wang
    Purdue University
    Student - Computer Science
    Vincent Wang is a current undergraduate studying Computer Science at Purdue University. He has years of experience in the drone protocol space from working as a former founding member of the AmadorUAVs high school drone club, developing extensible, high-level control solutions for aerial vehicles. He is currently interested in developing inter-drone communication and coordination solutions for autonomous, open-source drones.

    What about using zenoh between ground control station and uav? Zenoh has serial link support.
