  • After 8 early mole kills I have had no mole activity for over a month, so I've turned the hunt to my nuisance chipmunks. Gopher Hawk to the rescue.

For Chipmunks I use the Havahart traps loaded with peanut butter. One summer I removed nearly 30. They were so thick they were trying to get into the house through the door! But I'll admit using the Gopher Hawk would be more fun.

the wood spade drill bit is a great idea, your videos make me laugh. I haven't caught any gophers with my gopher hawk as of yet but when i came home today its shows it has been triggered but i haven't inspected it yet.

That night activity is some other critter other than chipmunks. They are not nocturnal at all. Mice or rats is probably what you are hearing. You probably have it all figured out by now.
I bought some round, flat, spring traps that I bait with Nutella or peanut butter … that by far has been the most effective against chipmunks.

Nice catch. Got any skunk there? I thought I had a skunk so my buddy gave me a trap and said just put a little peanut butter on it. Bang. Got that skunk and used that trap for years afterwards until I ran it over one day with the tractor. I would get as many squirrels as fast as I could empty the trap if I set it too early in the day for skunk. I would get 4 or 5 skunk a week. Every now and then a racoon would be in there in the morning. The skunks would just pull grass through the bottom of the trap and build something to sleep on til morning. Didn't even care. Then I'd take them for a one way ride, which is illegal where I am at but hey, the people that made those BS laws live in the city. Happy hunting.

Cool video and I love the spade bit idea for the Gopherhawk hole. I've been using the scissors type traps for my mole problem with some success, and just recently acquired a Gopherhawk for the deep tunnels. I've also got a chipmunk issue, and your video has given me an idea (insert evil laugh here.) Anyway, thanks for the videos - they're very helpful.

@@70elco28 Moles seem to be a lot more active after a rain when the ground is soft. Not sure what effect weather has on chipmunk activity, but it's probably worth a little research. Know your enemy and all that. But hey - be patient. You only have to get lucky once, but the chipmunks have to be lucky every day. 🙂

@@70elco28 Just had another thought - have you considered using some bait for the chipmunks? Something with peanut butter on it, or maybe some raisins to entice him into the hole? JAT

@@dpbeardslee If you watch Moles are digging up your yard for worms, They eat crap loads of worms and if you watch an active feeding bed after a rain the worms come up towards the surface...I have observed worms coming up on top of the surface and running from moles! The crazy zig zagging mole trails are feed beds and the long straight trails between areas is the place to set your EZ set mole traps. A mole might not ever come through a trail in the feeding area again if you don't flatten it down so the worms return, but they certainly will run through the straight trails in between those areas in the morning and evenings, midday if cloudy too.. sorry no experience with Chipmunks here.

@@televisiondxer8105 I'm thinkin' these moles are related to the 17 year cicada invasion we had a couple years ago. Same thing happened the last time the cicadas came to visit, and shortly afterwards we got overrun by moles. But I hear you on the worms too - I saw one last week while I was digging around in a mole castle and I swear he would have been a good prospect for the fifty yard dash. Never saw an earth worm move that fast. I've also noticed that there's a lot more mole activity in the shallow tunnels after a rain, and probably for the same reason - it brings the worms up. But it's been dry around here for the last couple weeks and I haven't seen much activity. I'm anxiously awaiting rain 'cause I know I've got at least a couple more in the yard. And I appreciate the tips on the trails - I'll keep it in mind when hostilities resume.

FYI. I live in a rural area in Upstate NY. I have been dealing with ground hogs. I have used smoke bombs ( sulfar ) and have filled hole with big rocks and chicken wire ...I did some research on trapping and relocating and killing... NYS Department of Environmental Conservation prohibits all of above...They suggest wildlife control companies be contacted as they subcontract for NYS DEC. Relocating is prohibited because of possibly transferring a sick animal to another location... Check with state guidelines before taking any drastic action. Use repellants whether chemical or electronic
