Be very careful using sulfuric acid! About 40 years ago, I used it for my bathtub drain and ended up with hazardous materials people coming in their funny little costumes for safety. The tub pipe went down into the basement and out to the sewer. It was a copper pipe From 1939 and it had a pinhole in it that up until that time was no problem. But the sulfuric acid opened it up just enough to let all of the acid drip down and hit the cement floor which it ate up immediately. It made fumes and it was a mess. The fire department came with the hazardous waste people. I had to open all the windows in the house, because the smell went up into the house. We opened the bulkhead door to the basement and we couldn’t go back in the house for about three hours.
Should spend an hour researching the benefits versus the negative benefits of using acid chemical for a blocked drain, whether its good for the plumbing system or not, old houses always have bad drain systems by not having PVC plumbing
Horse hocky. Green Gobbler is the best I've ever used. It is not a 30 minute clean. I put mine in the drain over night. I do the shower, drains, every couple of months. No problems Oh and it's biodegradable. This guy is definitely working for cleanout.
Please for God sakes if you use acid and still have to call a plumber let him know before he gets there cause chemical burn sux and makes the price go up
I've always used DrainO and it works perfectly every time, and the reason why is because i read the directions. People think all you do is pour the DrainO down the drain and that's it, but when you read the directions you find out that after a certain amount of time you're supposed to put a pot of boiling water down the drain
FYI: US sewage drains are made of these materials Clay sewer pipes - Ceramic Cast iron sewer pipes - Thick metal Orangeburg sewer pipes - Wood fiber PVC sewer pipes - White flexible Plastic ABS sewer pipes - Black strong plastic Concrete sewer pipes - Reinforced concrete Cast iron is the strongest sewer pipe. From an experience I can tell you, Drano gel is the best when there is sitting water, however, an hour is not enough for Drano gel, I have seen it taking 12 hours in some cases, We usually advise the tenant to leave it for 12 to 24 hours
I used "guaranteed to work" Draino two times on the same drain 24 hours apart and it didn't work at all. Then I poured a 12 ounce can of Coca Cola in and the sink opened up in 15 mins. Unclogged a toilet with it too.
I used a chamber of Green Gobbler the other day. To get rid of Avery bad clog in my tub. I left it for either half a day or overnight. It ended up getting it back to normal. I was this close in the store to buying Draino becwof the convenience. Glad I just ordered Green Gobbler instead of ruining my pipes even more. I also tried the natural ways beforehand. Like using baking soda & white vinegar, Dawn dishsoap & boiling water. None of those worked at all. It kind of eased my sink but that just continues to run slightly bad as always.
Funny thing. Green Gobbler I think also makes very large nylon strips, like spiny zip ties. They really snake it, clear stoppages, and can be reused or tossed. Quick, cheap, effective, safer than caustic chemicals. I gave up on chemicals.
I almost never put drain cleaner in a toilet because yes it cannot get to the clog to start working and never plunge a toilet with drain cleaner in it as it will splash everywhere while plunging a toilet, best to pour it down another drain, let sit for required time to digest the organic clog and then rinse with hot water, if the clog is really bad, use a drain snake, best to know the schematics of the drain lines to figure out where the clog actually is so the plan of attack can be formulated to work best on where the clog is
I don’t have a clog I just want to clean my drains and I can take the trap off but I’m looking for something I can pour down the drain to clean the gunk off the tubes.
For a simple trap under the sink, I just take it apart and clean it. I may just replace it, depending on how old it is. A simple p trap is like 15 bucks. You'll spend close to that much on a good drain cleaner.
I usually just buy the cheapest local noname chlorine+sodium hydroxide+surfactant drain cleaner available, using it 2 times with hot water, then finishing with a plunger. More than enough for most generic non-serious clogs, and not as much of a risk for the pipes involved as with concentrated acid. If you can't find an affordable option for a cleaner with this formula, you can also very easily make it yourself, since the aforementioned chemicals are among the cheapest and most widely available.
