What up! I actually attend college in Harlem. It’s called the City College of New York. It’s the one that Marvel spoofs in their comics. They call it “Empire State University”. Anywhom. Most of Harlem on the outside is starting to get gentrified but the inside is, an excuse my language, black af. Me being Latino, I mostly grew up knowing the small Latino side of Harlem. The Dominican and Colombian spots etc. but since I started college, I’ve gotten in touch with the black side. The little clubs where you have new artists debut their seemingly strange and odd genres. The community discussions/poetry slams that are held in the basement buildings of an ugly building no one would think even has electricity. Shit like that is Harlem af to me. One of my favorite memories in Harlem was actually watching Black Panther in Magic Johnson theatre on 125th. The amount of Afros and dreadlocks I saw. The colorful ass shirts everyone was wearing. That shit was great and will always stick in my mind. In terms of food though? Black Harlem takes an L. Us Latinos got that shit on lock. Check those joints out. The Dominicans put my fellow Mexican NYC food to fucking shame ....... The trains fucking suck tho.
I went to city college like 20 yrs ago, even back then walking around at night didn't scared me. There's always loads of cops in that neighborhood. There's plenty of spot in brooklyn, queens and bronx that's lot scarier. Harlem's just the most famous black neighborhood in NYC, but's it's far from the worst.
