How to Tie the Painter Hitch or Tumble Hitch - Quick Release Hitch

  • What is the Painter Hitch Used For? A painter is the name of a rope that is attached to the bow of a small boat or dinghy. This hitch is often used when tying up or towing small water craft. Having said that, the Tumble Hitch is often used by cowboys and ranchers, as it is a relatively secure hitch.
The Painter Hitch or the Tumble Hitch is a good secure way of attaching a rope to an object, this hitch also has the benefit of being quick release. Some people shy away from knots that are slipped, but I find that if the knot is dress smartly and tightly, then there is little chance of the hitch being tripped accidentally. However, as I always say, you are the master of your own knots, so the choice of course is yours.
The Painter Hitch is also a useful hitch that can easily be used on dog leads and dog leashes.

Rancher/Cowboy from Texas here. We call that the “bankrobber’s knot” or the “getaway hitch”. Used for tying horses so you can grab the tail as you’re already stepping up onto your horse and get away. Really nice for a shy horse bc if they freak out while tied you can pull the tail and the rope isn’t still wrapped around the fence to whip around and hit someone in the face. You have it in your hand and you can try to maintain control. Only knot I use tying horses anymore. I used to use a slip bowline but when you pull the tail on it the rope is still through the fence.

The Tumble Hitch is a different knot - more complicated, but more secure. It's more similar to the Highwayman's Hitch.

I see a disadvantage in tying a horse with the Painter hitch.
Because you have to grab the standing part with your fingers and pull it through the bight. 00:58
When a horse shys, it's easy to injure your fingers.

    • @geirjrstad4134

The QTaR hitch is a favourite for me, just a little bit more secure. Personally whether a knot is slipped or not, is not really a problem. I find that if it dressed and tightened correctly, it does not trip accidentally. Here is the QTaR for your reference: ruclips.net/video/ypRd8e3VfvA/видео.html

@@KnottingKnots that one definitely will be going into my playlist for knotwork. Out of curiosity, what is the lowest profile bend? I'm crocheting a scarf that swaps colors every 6cm. I'm using a square knot as a bend, as it is fairly low profile, however, if a better option exists, I would like to use it.
