    I have been to the Boiling River a few times and would like to add a visiting tip: if the Gardner River is still high (and dangerous) from snow melt (it was too high when I was there in early July) the parking area and swimming area will be closed. Probably the best time will be after Labor Day--the river is down and so are the crowds. Enjoy.

      Thanks! Truth is that I am not as organized as I would like to be. I try to keep content organized by year and the camera used to capture it. I can usually remember generally when something was shot, but the most time consuming portion of the editing process is often tracking down specific shots. It's extra tough when you are talking about several TB worth of video files. One of my goals is to become better organized!

    I found a similar place along the middle fork of the Salmon River once. Scalding hot springs along the southern bank were pouring a LOT of hot water into the extremely cold river. We (about a dozen of us on the same rafting trip) wedged several paddles into the rocks at this confluence and, using them as a framework, rigged a bunch of tarps in the river to trap the hot water. We figured out how to quickly adjust the tarps to blend the temperature extremes to whatever "setting" we wanted. After a half hour soak in our makeshift hot tub, a dive into the ice-cold river was the perfect finish. The only downside was that we had to walk through some VERY warm mud to get back to our campsite.

    I remember visiting a similar area near Mono Lake in California with a geology class. It was really hilarious, because the "hot springs" were as you describe; areas of icy water, and areas of too-hot water, and also thermoclines, where your feet would be in icy water, but your torso was in warm water; sometimes the reverse.
    The part that made us all crack up, though, is that there were all kinds of warning signs about entering the water, as it contains various minerals, including arsenic and sulfur...and then there were open-air changing rooms provided!
    And yes, "creek shoes" as we called them when my kids were in Girl Scouts, are a must!

  • @tammymartinez7488
    @tammymartinez7488 7 лет назад

    There are more than one hot springs to soak in. They are in backcountry and require long hikes or overnight stays. One is located on the bechler river in the sw corner of Yellowstone. This area has lots of beautiful waterfalls too.

    • @LongLongHoneymoon
      @LongLongHoneymoon  8 лет назад +9

      Haha, of course the odds of having a problem are minuscule... but if we don't include a warning, then there will be one guy who decides to do a cannonball in the deep end of the boiling water... and then he'll blame us for not warning him. Just use common sense and you'll be fine. 😄👍

      A sulfuric CAULDRON is NOT sulfuric ACID ... Microbes that are present in boiling water, are dead microbes .... there are NO dangerous microbes in those waters coming from either source except for the possible presence of giardia.... Its very hard to be "NOT SMART". It takes a LOT of ignoring, lack of reading comprehension and maintaining the brain on "auto pilot" ... Good Job ding dong. 👌👍

    I know where there is a perfectly preserved impact crater in the park.

    Follow the signs. This spot is closed when the river is high in early season. The ranger will ticket you if it's out of season.

    Was that a hot spring that I feel on my leg or just you Sean. Don't eat the yellow snow or drink the yellow water...Its not Mt Dew.... Hold it, did you say go skinny dipping during the day... yep 4.24 don't go after dark but do go during the day.

    How deep is this spot? I'm really short and don't know if I can keep my head above water. I love natural hot springs and planning another visit to Yellowstone and then off to Glacier next summer.

    Thanks For that secret. If I should make it over there from wet n windy England I will make sure my wife skinny dips in the daylight only! I will also ensure she realises to get the best from the waters she doesn't wear a costume. Well that's how I interpreted your advice anyway, lol.

      +Robert Garbe Yes, people have no idea the importance of being maneuverable until they've tried to pilot a big RV rig though some small spaces. You'll be fine with a truck camper.

      I worked at Mammoth in....... '82. LOL.....Cashier and waiter in the lodge. During my college days as well. (UCSB). We used to go down to the Hot Pots and party at night. =). (Things were a bit looser back then I guess.) Mammoth wasn't as scenic as the other villages I suppose, but the bars of Gardiner were close by....so that was fun when you are 21....LOL.... BTW - So true what you say about no outside communication back then. Went 2 1/2 months without even seeing a TV. Didn't miss it, of course.

      I worked at Mammoth in '71' in a Hamilton Store that isn't there anymore. There were no rules at the hot springs but not to get caught by the rangers!

    Actually, this isn't the only swimming/bathing hole in Yellowstone. It's not even the best one. Try Firehole Canyon Drive for a more scenic and centrally located spot.

    Did you smell like rotten eggs when you got out? Have you been to Glenwood Springs, Colorado? There is a huge hot spring pool there.

      +Shawn O'Leary Overall it is much better over this week. I broke it November 24... Last week I was able to get it back into a shoe, and I'm now walking around on it with more confidence. It's still swollen, but I'd say I'm 75% back in business. Thanks for asking!

      +RunningWithTheLyons Don't worry too much about that. In hindsight, we probably could have left that part out, but it's one of those warning disclaimers. The odds of getting sick must be extremely low. Just don't go down there and pour yourself a tall glass of Boiling River water, and you'll be fine. ;)

      +Dave If soaking in these natural warm springs seems too dangerous to you, you might as well avoid Yellowstone altogether. The risk here is minimal compared to other parts of the park.

    Let's see,15 min walk, cant park your RV, wear bathing suit there (while everyone laughs), go to toilet in a vault, take chance of being scaled to death, cut your feet on the rocks or the other option is freezing cold water or you can find a nice swimming pool or the ocean to enjoy? Easy decision for me, the pool! lol, thanks I just didn't know about that area,

    The U.S. is a police state. I've seen park rangers ruin people's hard earned vacations by being so heavy handed with enforcing petty rules. Vacation outside the U.S. It's much better. I'm an American in Australia.

    • @LongLongHoneymoon
      @LongLongHoneymoon  8 лет назад +1

      +troyfreedom We've been to 30+ countries. In Argentina you can pretty much stop your RV (and dump grey water) anywhere you please with no worries of being hassled. OTOH, in Argentina there's also a lot of littering - in the river town of Tigre, we noticed the river was sadly cluttered with litter. In Moldova the police will bluntly shake you down for cash. I never found out what happens when you don't hand over the money! In parts of El Salvador, there are no police (and/or the police are corrupt), and the criminals rule. You see people walking around with machine guns for safety. So it's not all roses everywhere around the world. The goal of any society is to find the right balance between liberty and order. I'm often willing to accept a little less order in exchange for more personal liberty. In other words, I AGREE with you that some U.S. rangers can be a little over eager to exert their authority. Obviously this is a complex topic that's tough to address in a RUclips comment box. ;-) Cheers

      Indeed, life can be ridiculously irresponsible to live. How dare people have fun and enjoy themselves in our national parks! Swimming is meant to be done in concrete pools, not in nature!!!
