You wouldn't even be able to open one of those indoors without the putrid smell filling the room sticking to the walls for days. I looked up the exact can she showed, MW Polar Smoked Boneless Herring Fillets in Canola Oil, 6.7oz. It's printed with a best by date, not an expiration date. Best by dates are only about freshness, not food safety. And it wasn't even a month over according to Filian. It's cooked fish; definitely pasteurized. There's no danger there. I think she just got an upset stomach from eating a new food.
