graffiti didn't really come from one thing, but in LA writing came from hobo graffiti in the 1930s (no spray paint, just paint) and then gangs started doin it either just before or after that, then some of em got creative with it and made it into block letters or fancy tags, then peeps started doin it outside of gangs. so i would say graffiti did come from writing, which came from gangs or hood signs :)
