I wasn't a fan of the "serum". That being said I loved the handy pump. So when I was finished with the "serum". I cleaned out the pump and sanitized the container. I then put their moisturizing cream in the pump and it makes applying my moisturizer more handy. Just a little tip for those who like to recycle containers.

Cerave tub is the only moisturizer I use. Period. (Other than sunscreens, of course!) I have pale acne-prone sensitive skin and have saved SO MUCH MONEY!!!
    Do I look perfect? No, I don’t.
Does my skin look healthy? Yes, it most definitely does. I get unsolicited compliments every now and then. And most importantly, I’m happy with the results I’ve seen since minimizing my routine.

L’Oréal bought CeraVe in January 2017. This is probably due to the new ownership of the brand. Currently, the products are exceptional at a drug store price. Hoping that continues. Love CeraVe products.

@@allisonbrough6076 Not sure if you are asking me or the other lovely lady - I slather it on my bod after shower. Sits right there on the counter next to the shower - pat dry, slater. Threw the stupid pump away, and bought one of those bread spreading plastic spatulas at TJMaxx in the kitchen department and use that to dispense and keep my hands out of it. I have used it on my face, and it works just fine. I do enjoy the PM cream on my face. What I like most on my face is the WalMart knock off of the Cerave lotions - that sits next to the sink and that goes on my neck and chest. Not so thick, same fab ingredients, nothing you don't want, and as the lady says "saves me time, money and mental energy better spent living a happy life!" That should be Cerave's tag line....!

I love the cerave moisturizing cream in the tub! I like to splash my face with water then put on a very thick layer at night. It's very nice because no matter how much you put on, it soaks in and leaves a nice supple finish to the skin and doesn't feel heavy or greasy. My skin just feels comfortable and plump 😍

I love the serum and moisturizing cream. The cream is feels very light on my skin and isn’t heavy. Most body lotions that I use often tend to “melt” off when I sweat or feel very heavy, whereas the moisturizing cream hasn’t done that for me. The serum feels like a gel that makes your skin very glossy and makes it feel moisturized. I have dry skin. The serum has been a guilty pleasure of mine due to the price point, but I love adding the serum on before adding the cream. The cream alone doesn’t give me that supple, “juicy” skin feel that the serum does.

The way I understand serum is that you're supposed to layer it under your usual moisturizer for that extra boost of effect (hydration, anti-aging, brightening etc) and that it's not supposed to be used by itself as a last step in skin care.

    • @kishlette1809
      @kishlette1809 5 лет назад +6

Agree. I don't think the term is all marketing puff. I think it's to signify how to use the product - to impart an active ingredient as part of a broader skin care regimen (cleanse, apply serums, apply moisturiser). I think that's why they use the term.

I feel those of us who are sweaty and have oily skin are frequently drawn to serums because of the consistency. I know it has fragrance, but the heaviest face moisturizer I can tolerate is neutrogena hydro boost water gel for oily skin, for example. So I get why serums are attractive for those of us who get sweaty as soon as we apply heavier products.

@T Gilbert It's not over the word "serum" and not because of greediness. This serum as all the products in a purple line are formulated "paraben-free" and that under the pressure asserted by fear mongering without a scientific reason. The moisturizer in the tub as well as PM lotion formulated with parabens as a preservative system. You can see it in ingredients' lists on CeraVe site.
Parabens are well-studied and well-tolerated ingredients that allow creating an effective preservative system so the cosmetic formula will remain stable and bacteria free. And they are cheap which has been reflected in the prices of products.
Nowadays parabens have been feared by many, so companies are trying to create alternative preservative systems, which are less studied, sometimes less effective and more expensive.
One customer, reviewing the product, accused CeraVe of using parabens. CeraVe representative replied that while some products are paraben free, some need the parabens as the most effective and SAFE preservatives. Then he said that they hope to be able in the future to come up with a preservative system that will allow formulating all their products without parabens.
If it will happen (to my dismay) - our favorite moisturizer in the tub will not be the same and its price will go up. Nothing to do with "capitalism" but plain stupidity.

From the business point of view, I can understand they want to please the consumers but I gave up from all those "magical" serums, oils, acids, gadgets, etc. a few years ago. As someone made a joke on one of the skincare videos: for magic, I will read Harry Potter:))) Thanks for this review!

Hey Dr. Dray. I ended up purchasing this about a week or so ago, and so far have really liked it. I'm a loyal CeraVe consumer, and really just enjoy trying their new products. I like to use this at night and layer my CeraVe moisturizing night cream on top. My skin as been looking and feeling softer and less dull. I usually prefer the tub cream for my body, but that might be just a consistency preference.

The Cerave tub gives me acne because of the petroleum in it. Even though it says won’t clog pores, non comedogenic . The Cerave lotion is oil free and doesn’t contain petroleum so I prefer that but it’s not hydrating enough in the winter.

Dr. Drey the vast skincare knowledge that you are sharing is life changing! After using the Proactiv MD system (which I would love to see you review, along with Rodan and Fields the serum masters) for over a year with very little results, I opted for a mild unscented cleanser, followed by a high quality moisturizer applied on WET SKIN. Both products were from the drug store. After TWO DAYS I am already seeing a difference in my skin! You have completely changed the way I approach skin care. Less is definitely more, and good products don’t have to cost a fortune. Thanks again!

I am so glad you reviewed this product!! I actually clapped with excitement to hear what you had to say about it as I’ve been using it for the last month. My skin barrier was compromised from an allergic reaction to some other products I was using. I decided to use this like the neutrogena hydra boost (extra dry) to wet skin and then use the Cerave in the tub layered on top to help with my healing. My skin is/was super sensitive (red, inflamed, itchy, dry, flaky) at the time I started to use it. I did not have any irritation surprisingly. My skin barrier is healing nicely. Not sure if this product had anything to do with it (as I figured out the culprit of the allergic reaction) but I’m sure the extra moisturizing step didn’t hurt. So appreciate your honest thoughts. Would love your recommendation on an alternative product as you said that would include similar ingredients but offer more to the table. You are the best!!! Thank you! 🌟💕

curiously in my esthetician licensing course we hardly mention serum as it’s not considered optimal, and we recommend oils more than serums, it’s simply listed as a water based humectant, there are oil based and then more occlusive moisturizers we learn about. Although we do tend to sell product as to where we work, the more you are educated on ingredients the more your realize how simple your skincare can be with the correct moisturizer and spf. Serum is more marketed as a moisturizing booster but I don’t think it’s necessary if you are using a good moisturizer. Thank you for sharing the truth about “serums” :)

I'm pretty lost what do do right now. I've been struggling with acne since I was 12 and I'm 20 now. I've been with my same dermatologist for 8 years but no luck. I did blood tests for my hormones but they are all fine. My dermatologist even sent me to an endocrinologist for further testing and all of my results came back fine. I don't know if it's time to switch to a new dermatologist or what to even do. Dr. Dray thanks for your insightful review! Most people are taught to put. A "serum" on first after using a "toner" then before they put on their moisturizer creams. So hopefully those who feel like they MUST have a serum will have done this. So basically the general public has been taught to:
    1. Wash
    2. Tone
    3. Serum
    4. Moisturize
As you can imagine the MOST important thing is missing on this list, which is to SUNSCREEN, and that isn't even on the list of instructions that people have been typically told to do! Now obviously if people are doing their "night time" routine then that's not going to be necessary anyway, and maybe they have a "day cream" that does contain a "little bit" of sunscreen, but it's not likely that people even use a "Day Cream" with more than 15% of sunscreen, when you have recommended that we use no less than 30%.
My hope for this particular product is that people who are going to use it or feel like they "must have" this product are hopefully at least going to typically use an occlusive moisturizer cream after this sinks in anyway. LOL!
I have been lucky because I typically have used Loreal Age Perfect or Avon Anew ( because I have been selling and buying Avon my whole life, as my Mom bought & sold it growing up also) "day" creams, both of which contain 30% - 50% sunscreen in them. This is better than nothing. Unfortunately, until I started watching your videos a year ago, that is when I made sure to use a separate sunscreen daily.
I have found that I get the best results from a physical sunscreen. What seems to work very well for my skin is the Walmart Equate brand physical sunscreen with zinc oxide and dimethicone & colloidal oatmeal for babies, which has SPF 50%, is water resistant, and is only $4.98 for 3.0 oz. Upon your advise, I looked for the most affordable products first, rather than wasting money on the highest priced physical sunscreens, also Equate brand sunscreens tested better in Consumer Reports than many of their higher end counterparts. Yay!
What is even more AMAZING is that it really works very well for a Foundation/makeup primer! I am 45 years old and have maturing skin. I have always been vigilant about putting on an SPF of 30-50% since they've first come out on the market, for when I was going to be exposed to the sun in the summertime ( before this we used 15%, which was typically the highest SPF available and considered "very strong" for many years, LOL!)
However, until I started watching your videos about a year ago, I didn't use a separate sunscreen for my face, ears, and neck all year long, especially in the wintertime here in Virginia, with the exception of my "daytime" creams that had 30% -50% because I used the Loreal Age perfect day cream or Avon Anew day creams that also had 30-50%. As you can see from my photo that I still look pretty youngish, but honestly that is from my genetics more than anything else, because my parents both look very young for being in their late 60's/70's ( my Mom is 67 and my Dad is 72.) Of course my Dad neglected his skin regarding being vigilant for sunscreen, but he still looks great simply because of genetics! Lol However, he had had to have pre-cancerous cells removed from both of his ears and lips ( which healed beautifully and you can't even find a small visible scar! Grrr! LOL He's so darn lucky!)
I have 3 sons ( I don't want them to be stubborn like my Father, so I have raised them to comprehend how important sunscreen is, regardless of their gender!).
My son who is 17, is living with autism and intellectual disabilities. So for his skincare routines, I have had to create a "picture schedule" for him to remember his daily skincare routines. I want to also thank you so much for your videos! Because they were also extremely helpful with clearing up his acne, which was a side effect from his medications for seizures as well as sever agression from his severe anxiety disorder due to sensory overload, stemming from his autism and reaction to puberty.
I have one daughter who is 15 almost 16. My sons are 26, 17, and 14. So I am also thankful that I started watching your videos, because I am passionate about giving them not only the best products for their different skin types and issues, but also the most up to date information from your videos on what they should and shouldn't be doing.
Also, I have a niece who is recently started dealing with hereditary cystic acne at only 12 years old in the 6th grade. This runs on her Father's side of the family and his family, so my sister has been unsure about how to help her. So last week I sent her your videos regarding the over the counter Differen gel as well as encouraging her to set up an appointment with a Dermatologist because what the family practice doctor recommended has NOT been helpful. I also wanted her to understand the importance of moisturizing, and how you applied only a pea sized amount of the Differen gel, and how you used the barrier gel moisturizer to keep it from entering her eyes and mouth, especially because she is so very young, of course ONLY if that's what the Dermatologist is going to recommend for her to start out with.
Anyway, thanks so much! I'm sorry that this is such a long comment, but I have been utilizing your videos for many different things, all that have been successfully implemented thanks to your AMAZING insights and selflessness to invite us into your world and share your knowledge as a practicing Dermatologist! Xoxo

On top of that my skin feels dry after I apply it (and I don't have dry skin) and if I try to layer it up with a moisturizer or sunscreen, it's peels off of my skn. Never but this again. Thanks for the review.

I used this serum before . I Wasn’t impressed with the price or the product . Now I’m using the moisturizer in the tub as recommended by you . I also use the Am moisturizing cream . Love how my skin looks more fresh . Thank you ...
