- Back in 2014, we planted one tree per minute in Burkina Faso. Today, we’re planting a new tree every second across 21 reforestation projects across the planet. And thanks to you, we’ve now planted 50 million trees in total.
These trees have absorbed 2.5 million tonnes of toxic CO2 from our atmosphere. But they are doing so much more. They are creating a habitat for chimpanzees in Uganda. In the Sahel region of Burkina Faso, they stop the desert from moving south. They are restoring water supplies and soil fertility in Peru. And they are providing more dependable, diverse and plentiful harvests to smallholder farmers around the world.
That’s why 50 million trees matter. Thank you for joining us on this journey. We’re just getting started.

Great idea
They have ad's in the form of text so they aren't invasive. Keeps the site clean. That's how google got so big and preferred. Plastering pictures, videos or animated ads will actually make less people use the site. I like it as it currently is. If people want video ads to watch so they contribute it should be on a separate page or site, designed just for that.

yes, they have financial reports on their website every month to show their profits and tree planting activities. it's surprisingly well thought out

I think Google have bigger fish to fry. Ecosia poses such a minute threat to them. Not Ecosia, nor Bing, nor Yahoo, nor anyone else will ever undermine the algorithmic search power and depth of Google search. It's become a natural monopoly in that game and is years ahead. However, Ecosia will take enough of a slice of a the pie to make a digital dent in climate change. And that's what matters.
Google's biggest threat is currently duckduckgo but ecosia is rising because of the change in public mindset towards the environment. I'm down for an ecosia, duckduckgo partnership ( perhaps instead of bing (; ).

Lol, I've stopped using Google for searching stuff because they refuse to value privacy. I've been using duckduckgo because they do. I'll use Esosia and Duckduckgo because I support what both of them do.
In the last 6 months, we've planted over 16 million trees since this video. that's more than a fifth of the 50 million trees planted in 9 years. We're heading in the right direction.

You've missed out one big change that you're making ... You're changing the perspective of every single person that hears about all the great things you're doing. Every one thinks that the future is doom and gloom, and no wonder they do through all the negative media we are fed. But I do not think that for one second, because of companies like Ecosia. I have been spreading good things about this search engine among friends/families. I know this comment may be ignored, but can you do something for India? It has rich ecosystem with various trees, birds etc. and it's under threat due to increasing population, and plastics. Can ecosia pleasee do something/anything about it?

The best thing you could do is to talk to your friends and families about climate change. Try to learn how you can easily save plastic and teach others to do the same. Change the world around you to a more sustainable environment step by step :)

You know there are 3 trillion trees. Imagine if the USA and Chinese and Indian military budgets were spent on planting trees every year. It costs 1 dollar to plat a tree on average by ecosia. Imagine if they had almost a trillion a year to do it? In three years the number of trees would almost double and the planet would be saved. Literally the military budget. Love not war and the planet saved all at once. To bad it’s all a fantasy and the real world is quite different.

Problem we have is we use more trees than we plant, maybe every government needs to start planting more trees to prevent global warming

I recently found out about this and I thought of it to be too good to be true but now I have been convinced that it is legit. I have been recommending this to all of my friends and family. Will continue to do so and use this app! Please continue the good work.
The not true in this case is not that they are not planting trees. The not true is that those guys are taking money for their 'job' and that it is not making any change in the grand scheme of things. CO2 is not an issue, it makes earth greener. Heavy metals, and strange chemicals are.

It's crazy to see how you've grown from 2014 and in the past week I have roped 15 people onto the ecosia train to celebrate 50m, and will continue until we hit 100 million trees and beyond. The crazy thing is the community we have grown together, and how it will continue to expand. Just look at the likes to dislikes ratio of is 3000:6 how crazy is that?!

For me it was looking for alternatives to Google products. I had switched to vivaldi (awesome browser by the way 5/5) and was looking to change Google search to something else. I was about to settle on duckduckgo (see above and below) but then I saw ecosia and was sold.
It's pretty incredible. Especially when you remember that Ecosia has only been around for a few years, and that their rate of tree-planting goes up exponentially over time, as more and more people join the bandwagon. That's awesome that you've converted so many people! The average Google user, at least, makes an average of 37 searches per month (theoverspill.blog/2015/10/19/searches-average-mobile-google-problem/). Multiply that by 15, and that's 555 new searches on Ecosia every month that you caused to happen. I hope all Ecosia users are that enthusiastic. While a team-up between DuckDuckGo and Ecosia would be nice, you have to remember that ads are how Ecosia makes money. Companies pay them to put their search results at the top of the list (marked by "Ad"), and they use that money to plant trees. So DuckDuckGo and Ecosia, while independently awesome, would actually end up working against each other.
As for other ideas, it would be really cool if Ecosia could implement something similar to the "Google Instant" features. I still find myself using Google every so often when I need to make a calculation or look up a word, because they will recognize your search and bring up a calculator or dictionary/thesaurus right there on the search page, which is very convenient. I'm in college and have to write a ton of papers, and I often end up using the Google thesaurus multiple times a day. If Ecosia had something similar, I think I'd be planting a lot more trees. Ecosia, if you guys see this, please think about it! It would be a really good way to get more searches out of each Ecosia user.

Agreed about the instant recommendation feature, ecosia has a calculator already, but it still lacks some features.
However I would disagree about the duckduckgo thing. You seem to be under the impression that when I wrote about the turn off ads part i meant that duckduckgo does not have ads, I simply meant that duckduckgo probably does not care that much about profit. Duckduckgo also features great instant results, possibly better then Google's.
about the friends they are super syked about it due to the fact that they are also activists. admittedly immature but, they are so crazed they did fake searches to see the counter go up. also assuming they go and recommend it to 3 others, (most have already have) that would just ripple onward, spreading and spreading. and it defiantly seems that we do a lot more then 37 searches a month, probably creeping towards at least 100. if that is so lets see, (15 x 4 = x (friends + their recruits) x100 /45 (45 searches to plant a tree)) that's 133 trees a month! I have also found that duckduckgo's !bang results are awesome

This is one of the most major steps we need to do to helping the future.
Trees, algae, and other plants are the way of the future, steel, concrete, and fossil fuels are not. Alternative fuels and food can be made from algae, trees store Co2 and provide wood for the massive wooden skyscrapers of the near future.

Genuine question: Does it do everything that trees do? Like support hundreds or thousands of different species?
It only works well in environments where bamboo is a natural and original native to the area, otherwise, we would mess up the ecosystems

Second, I'm curious as to how many actual trees have been planted through Ecosia and it's partners. It seems as though the counter is based on searches and you have stated that an average of 45 searches is needed to plant a tree.
So, when you say 50 million trees, do you mean 50 million actual trees have been planted? Or do you instead mean that, you estimate X trees have been planted where X = (Number of searches) / 45 and X = 50 million?
If the former, that's amazing!
If the latter, then based on the fact that I have had over 1,000 searches with Adblock on, none of my searches have directly helped to plant trees. If I assume I am a typical user, making up at least half the user base, then it stands to reason that less than half the number of trees you estimate to be planted have actually been planted.
If you check out their financial report, you can see how much money was put into tree planting every month. Divide that by the price of a tree and you have your number of trees planted
