  • It was the weekend and the weather was too good to stay indoors, so my wife and I jumped in the car for a trip to Pulborough for a visit to an antique emporium followed by a look around the garden center to pick up some end of season bargains. After a coffee and a cake I wandered over to the railway where there is usually a train running at the weekends for children: parents and grandparents are also welcome. There were three passenger trains and freight train running, clearly it was a special event weekend, I didn’t have my cameras with me, so I asked one of the railway’s volunteers whether a similar train service would be running the following day, to which the answer was “Yes”. I returned early the following day to film the locomotives being prepared for the day ahead, it turned out to be a really good event with plenty of rail action and the bonus of a model railway display.
The garden center is about a mile from the town center and a 10 minute walk from the mainline railway station. The town itself is located in West Sussex close to the ancient and modern bridges carrying the A29 London to Bognor Regis road over the River Arun.
Locomotives in action on the day were:
No.6100 in LMS crimson livery, similar in appearance to a 'Royal Scot' locomotive.
No.6220 LMS streamlined pacific locomotive 'Coronation' in blue with bold silver lining.
No.27 ‘The Railway Mission’ in British Rail 'Express Green' livery, similar in appearance to a GWR King Class locomotive.
No.84 ‘Crowborough’ a Terrier Class engine finished in Stroudley's ‘Improved Engine Green’.
No.135 ‘Anna’ a distinctive tram engine was hauling a demonstration freight train.

Hello Tim! A feast for the eyes, I have never seen this small train (26 cm) track. Unbelievable what the little things pull away 👍. I think I know this man at. min. 15:53. Best regards from Hans and Cheers 🍻🇦🇹.

Hello Hans, 10 ¼ inch gauge is popular for park, pleasure and club railways here in the UK, big enough to carry people, small enough to transport the locomotives in a large van. I’ve seen that guy somewhere, I think it might have been the bathroom mirror when I was having a shave this morning 🍺😄. Tim.

Another wonderful video, Tim, and what a bit of luck turning up at the right time! I enjoyed it particularly because it's in my far-off home of Sussex, and because my son, currently living in Billingshurst, used to manage that garden centre many years ago. He's now general manager of Newbridge Nurseries, up the road near Horsham, but sadly they don't have a similar attraction to offer.

Hello Jim, it's always good to get a nice surprise, I had no idea it was a special Gala Weekend on the railway, I'm glad I made the trip back the following day. It's a small world, I've lived in West Sussex all my life, I couldn't imagine living anywhere else. I know the garden center where your son works, I stop off for a coffee sometimes when I'm out and about on work errands.

@@Timsvideochannel1 I sent Steve (my son) a link to your video. He would have taken his children to the Steam Gala but wasn't aware it was on, unfortunately - not well advertised, I gather.

I didn't know it was on, I just happened to go to the garden center for a coffee and a cake with my wife, there wasn't even the usual "Trains Running Today" sign at the entrance to the garden center, having said that, the trains were busy, had it been more widely advertised, overcrowding might have been a problem. Hi Tim - I took my grandson there for the first time about two months ago, he will be 2 in a weeks time. He was a little bemused by it I think although he loves trains and cannot get enough of Thomas the Tank Engine on RUclips. Son has got him a wooden train set for his birthday as he is so into it.
When we went there were only two trains running, nothing like on this video. So were they there for this special occasion only or are they there permanently?
Its a cracking railway and will certainly be taking him back there aswell as the Stansted Park light Railway which has been extended aswell.
    Brilliant video as usual Tim.
    Regards Chris

Hello Chris, it's nice to have somewhere like this to take the grandchildren within a reasonable distance from home. Those wooden trains never go out of fashion, I had one and my kids also had a Brio trainset. Usually there is just one train running, although at busy times they do have a two train service. This was a special Steam Gala Weekend. I need to pay a visit to Stansted Park again, another lovely railway for kids and parents alike. I'm pleased you enjoyed the video. Cheers. Tim.

Hello Keith, I know exactly what you mean, as a kid I used to occasionally visit a park in Christchurch where I vaguely remember a beautiful Coronation class locomotive running. There is no sign of that railway today, upon speaking to the owner of the Coronation class locomotive running at the event, I discovered that the railway in the park at Christchurch wasn’t my imagination playing tricks, the railway did once exist and the locomotive I was admiring was same locomotive I used to see running in those far off days.

I had a similar experience with the Littlehampton miniature railway, I have a picture of myself as a child standing next to a miniature train, it was around fifty years later when I visited the railway, that I realised it was the place where that old photo had been taken.

Hi, I'm pleased you enjoyed it, they are popular all over the world at tourist attractions, garden centers and sometimes at large out of town shopping complexes. There is one about half a mile from my home in the local park. Most of the bigger towns have such railways in their parks, usually operated on summer weekends by local engineering clubs and societies. They were once popular in seaside towns operating along piers, many still exist although they tend to run along the seafront now because many of the Victorian ere piers are in a poor state of repair or in some cases they have collapsed into the sea. These trains are enjoyed by everyone, although old timers like myself use kids as an excuse to visit and ride them. Cheers. Tim.

@@Timsvideochannel1 Thanks for all the info Tim. 😀Well, I didn't come across any other mini trains here on the Gold Coast but maybe I am not going around as much as I used to. Some of the theme parks have a bit bigger trains but not these mini ones.

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  2 года назад +1

@@OmniaInNumerisSitaSuntI have to admit the big theme parks do use wider gauges so that the trains can cater for the large number of people using them.

@@Timsvideochannel1 Places like this give me an opportunity to trot out a well-worn joke. But the set-up itself is brilliant. I know of a set-up at Toronto NSW but sadly I'll never get to see it as it's privately owned and not open to the public.

@@neilforbes416 I wouldn't expect anything else Neil, I am lucky to live in a part of the world where there are plenty of places to see live steam in action, representing most common gauges. There are some privately owned ones in the area, most are open to the public for a few days each year, although others such as this one are owned and operated by clubs running on most weekends during the summer.
