True! I've done this quite a bit in the past but prefer the oil-primed linen surface. Just depends on personal preference. Now I am using Michael Harding's Non-Absorbent Acrylic primer on Gatorboard panels and really enjoying that working surface.
😂 Well that certainly helps... although I'm sure with enough elbow grease you could cut through an 1/8" hardboard panel with a utility knife :) -OR- make good friends with someone who has the saw

Save even more and prime the panels themselves and paint directly onto the boards
