I think the bug was attracted by your light. Wants to be a star... Other than that I only noticed it because you pointed it out every time, yet I was much more intrested of the subject of your movie.
Interesting to see you guys exploring China. For those who are retiring, with not too much financial worries, to set foot in China may be a good choice. To live there, interact with the people, their villages, mountains, historical sites , their eatery, etc.. It may take you years to explore the whole of China.
I became interested in history because I had a very good history teacher. She wrote on the blackboard in bold letters " Why do we learn history ?" when all the events are in the past. Answer .... she explained... history taught us what happened in the past, how we arrived at the present and our current state, and to know where we are heading towards. Conclusion : history is not all about dead subjects. It's about knowing why we are at this present state and the future we want to be. It's a very alive subject 😃
4.50 that's a good discovery for a foreign , that's why we chinese never do stupid things or saying stupid things or lieing like pomepeo that doesn't even feel ashamed , we are taught , otherwise you will be sorry to your ancestors , you guys are really understanding the culture a step further !!! Understand the culture and the behavior you will automatically understand their way of thinking and doing , it's all linked
This is the mausoleum of Emperor Jing of Han dynasty. His reign (157 BC to 141 BC), along with that of his father Emperor Wen, known as the Rule of Wen and Jing, was considered to be one of the golden ages in Chinese history. The two large burial mounds of Emperor Jing and his Empress were not yet excavated. Archaeologists have been excavating the pits surrounding the two large mounds since 1997 and considered that the underground part of mausoleum was relatively well-preserved from grave robbery. The miniature terracotta figures of servants were originally clothed and had wooden arms.
Xiian used to be the capital for the first feudal dynasty Qin. And it was the capital city for two of the most powerful dynasty in Chinese history which is Han and Tang. One was the origin of the current majority ethnic group. The other was the founder of the silk road.
Qin dyansty was not "feudal" but the "first centralized imperial dynasty" in China, in fact, Qin dynasty canceled feudal system in order to enforce centralization system. "Centralization(中央集權)" and "Feudal System" (封建制度) are two completely different and opposite systems. You should be careful to use these terms, in Chinese speaking world, "封建(fedual)" is very often being abused and misused due to various reasons, but in English it's a very specific term refers to a specific European political system, don't abuse it or you'll easily mislead foreigners.
at 4:35, Lee have found a very very important, if not the most important, cultural tradition of Chinese, that is the worship of ancestors instead of religious gods. That's why the majority of Chinese people is free thinker while taking ancestor worship very seriously, not only in modern days but also in ancient times. In fact, even at the level of government, worship of Huang Di is marked as an important ceremony to be held every year.
Yuan Wang , the word worship has no equivalent in the Chinese vocabulary nor psychic. The closest word to worship is respect which does not mean worship per say as worship has a negative connotation in Chinese as representing no self esteem! Anyways have a nice day, be well and stay safe.
The Terracotta Army is amazing, Gwieilo60! Could not have been done anywhere else in the world at that time. I am surprised he had not been there. He lived in China before I did. we went there our first year.
i like to see the three genmtle men travel together in China, may sonewhere still not good enough to you and need develop further, but i am always blessing all of you to enjoy and happy life in China, safe and healthy! thanks for your intriduction what about China positive things.
Great Vlog, fascinating! According to a legend, the defence mechanism to prevent tomb robbing Emperor Qinshihuang put in place in his mausoleum was supposed to be extremely strong and deadly. Maybe you can find out more about that?
LOL! Matt is thinking that he is on a trip of treasure hunting, but Lee thinks the tomb is just a museum! Different mindsets make you feel differently right?
Excellent vlog, like seeing something like this delivered with passion. Looking forward to your next video as I have been to the terracotta warriors and allweays good to see someone elses take on things.
The mounds on Chinese tombs are for late generation to come back to worship. Tomb stones can be ruined and mounds can stay much longer. On imperial mausoleums there were often some structures on the mounds, like worship temples etc.
Being from the city of Weifang, Shandong Province, I still feel weird to hear that as a person's name... Welcome to Weifang! Preferably in April to fly some kites.
The typical ancient chinese grave usually have a pile of earth in a rounded mount shape. This is for the Feng Shui goodness. The bigger and higher the pile the better will be for the descendants luck and good fortune.
I love history too , not boring , my dad keep saying forget the pass focus on the future, me :"still reading history stuff and watching history movies"
Oh yes, I follow the Barretts but it's a great pity they both are not interested at culture at all because they have been visiting some great places, a privilege that not everybody has but regretfully, the cultural aspects are always absent from their videos. Same goes for Gweilo 60. What a pity they don't take a wider and deeper advantage of these splendid opportunities!
Hello all, in ancient times, the Chinese believed life continued after death. Wealthy people brought all their earthly belongings, their entertainers, and servants in miniatures so they could continue to enjoy their lives in another realm. As an interesting result, the tombs which are able to survive after being raided from time to time for the treasures, serve in the present as a time capsule of the past.
Hey, Matt, if you love history and this kind of museum, you must not miss Shaanxi History Museum (in Xi'an also), one of the best and important museum in China, but remember to pick some time that is not during public holidays otherwise you can only see people mountain people sea

Hi bro Matt. When you recommending something. It is better to put your camera focus on the thing you are telling about. so we can see the objects you want us to know. not only focus on your handsome face.
In Chinese belief system, a person dead could become a god, especially those who did great things. There are many gods for Chinese are real people in ancient time. Traditionally tomb are like houses, have different rooms. They are living in a different world, but still have a place on earth. The tomb shows their existence, and remind you where they are, because their offspring will come to sweep the tomb every year.
Dont mean to be rude, but itll help if the lense was focused more on the exhibits or scenery while youre talking. After a few videos, its overwhelmingly too much face to camera. Thanks.
Nice video. Just to add, the Chinese and most other cultures too, don't like others to play, walk all over their graves, it is taboo hence, the high pile of earth or concrete over the graves. Also, lots of people believe in reincarnation too, where the 2nd return life can be as a human, an animal or an insect, depending on your previous karma. So, swiping that bug that bothered you, that's not the right way to treat someone's ancestor. Hahaha...Sorry, just joking...Jayoe.
Ok Matt I completely agree with you but, please, you have the privilege of visiting such a unique place and you are showing us almost nothing. You should have talked but also shown at the same time.

the reason why xi‘an's subway build so slowly is because they just dig up ancient tomb everywhere....

Xi`An was the ancient capital of China, for a number of dynasties, that`s why it has a higher concentration of archeological findings.
I love this kind of history! Back in 1980 I literally lost hours sitting atop a pyramid in Mexico built by the Aztecs! Thanks for sharing bug and all!

Indeed liu Qi lay the foundation for liu Che to drive out the Xiongnu.
Thank you very much for your commentary. I'm fascinated by Chinese archaeology, but it's so difficult to get much information in English.
Under his ruling, Chinese population reached 50 million which record hadn't been broken until 700 years later in Tang dynasty.
