- Hey Groovehacker, Scott here… hope you’re having a wicked day! :)
I got my hands on a VERY cool short scale bass the other day… so, I thought it’d be fun to make a video about it for ya…
There’s some things I LOVE about short scale basses… but equally, there are things that I don’t like too.
In this new video I’m gonna share the good, the bad, and the ugly…
Oh… AND… I’m giving it away… so YOU could win it! All the details are in this video.
As always, see you in the shed...
Scott :)

Supro bass… my favorite vintage bass is a Fender Mustang. I’ve been a guitarist since 1956. Got into bass in 1993 starting with a Martin Acoustic followed by a number of solid body electric basses until I discovered the Mustang, short scale is all I wish to play today, switching back and forth between guitar and bass is much easier with a 30 inch scale bass. I turn 76 this September.
Hey Scott, I don't know if you realized when you were playing it, but you can pull up the tone knob to turn on the piezo bridge, and it gives it a nice poppy sound. Definitely on my favorite basses, and glad to see you think so as well!
Supro bass... My favorite vintage style bass is the Rickenbacker 4003 in Jetglo, Lemmy or sir Paul's axe. The feature i really love with this bass is the "Rick O Sound" channel. She is on my "gear to pocess list" since years now ;)
Supro bass... I love the classic Fender Jazz Basses, the type you saw in the Wattstax performances. I love the block inlays in the frets, the bridge pickup has so much punch, and you can channel so many of the best bassists just by picking one up!
Supro bass... My fav is the peavey T-40 bass from the 80's
Supro Bass... My Favourite vintage style bass would be the Fender Squier Classic Vibe 50’s Precision Bass
Supro bass... my favorite vintage style bass is the old made in Japan basses. (Tesicos, Kawais, etc.) They got a unique look and sound and they play amazing if you find the right one.
Uncle Squiddz hi
I have to Yamaha Motion B's , Japanese medium scale...awesome
*
Two
Supro bass...my favorite style vintage bass is, well honestly I play a short scale fender mustang and i love it, it fits me perfectly. For now its my favorite.
Supro Bass... Fender Musicmaster. Wow that looks great and sounds amazing. Very nice!
Supro bass... 1965 Danelectro Shorthorn Vintage Electric Bass! Wow!!
Anonymous I used to play a copper shorthorn. Loved it
Rinus Gerritsen for the win!!!
David Wolfe I have a 58 black dolphin nose that I keep round wounds on. It still has the original case.
Supro bass... A Fender Musicmaster Bass. I sorta have a thing for short scale basses. Maybe it's the punch. Same goes for a 20x14 bass drum. The two together just melts my ears :D
I have the Musicmaster too!
Good taste. Have the same thing for shortscales, even though I've never owned one.
My brother in law would take it to gigs as his backup bass. :)
Got my Musicmaster in 1974 when I was 16 - still playing it . Never found anything better but I do enjoy less weight of my Taylor acoustic bass . 23.5 inch neck - weighs nothing .
Supro Bass... gotta go with Paul McCartney's Hofner violin bass
Supro bass...I love any style of those Rickenbackers coming out of the '70s!
That Adam Neely course looks 👌👌👌
I had no idea he could shred like that.
yes, super musician and educator...
Supro bass... my childhood dream, the Rickenbacker 4003
SUPRO bass.......Kay M1B series
Supro Bass, definitely a Rickenbacker 4001, like the one Cliff Burton used, just an amazing bass
Hi Scott - Supro Bass ... love the PBass circa 1962-63, also love some of the RI 1950s PBasses, especially through custom house.
Supro Bass... Peavey T-40. Heavy ash body huge cool tone.
Chris Tompkins I also love the T-40. Used to play one in church years ago. My gosh it was heavy though. Actually would make my back hurt after a long rehearsal sometimes. Great tone though, and there are some snakey tricks you can pull with how they wired the pots and pickups too! Great bass!
Just bought one of them a few months ago. Love it.
Nice! A T-45 was my first bass, learned on it and gigged with it until it got stolen.
I had one too. It was my first "real" bass. boy was that thing an anvil!
Supro bass... My favorite vintage bass is the gibson EB3 i just love the idea of the mini humbucker in the bridge...
Supro bass...Hofner H500/1
I actually have a bass with a mini humbucker in the bridge and neck, it is hollow though
Supro bass... My favorite vintage style bass is the Music Man Stingray, despite it doesn’t look as vintage as the EB3, but it sounds great and its pickup sounds great in almost every bass, but sadly I don’t have enough money to buy one...
Supro bass... My all time favorite vintage bass is the 1968 Ampeg Scroll bass. It's tone is just unreal and has one of the nicest necks on a bass.
There is a '67 AEB available here in Austin. It's not cheap, but it plays beautifully.
www.austinvintageguitars.com/Store/index.php/basses/basses-other/basses-other-vintage/1967-ampeg-aeb-1.html
Tahoma Toelkes Dang wish I could get down there. It's too bad I live in northern Arkansas, good music stores are few and far between around here.
Supro bass... My favorite vintage style bass is the Gibson Triumph bass. Mine is from 1971. Short scale as well! Really love this new Supro!
Whoaaaaa! The Adam Neely footage at the end!
wtf is up with his voice tho? it sounds so high-pitched
Pretty sure it's been sped up to fit more stuff in. I just watched the entire course and (a) Adam didn't speak like that, (b) he didn't play that fast :)
Supro Bass... definitely gotta go with the 1979 Gibson RD Artist Bass. The tonal range on the thing is insane!!
yes!! suprised not many people have said this one yet
Supro Bass...The junkiest Fender Musicmaster I can find at a pawn shop. Super Glue has great sustain.
There's a reason fretless players coat their fretboard with the stuff
I like how excited you are about the bass! I just got my first bass and its a short scale.
I honestly prefer short scale to full scale, even though I’m six foot tall and massive hands, I almost always use short scales
I also have bigger hands and have been playing bass for 1 year. I have a long scale bass. I'm planning to buy a short scale one. Would you recommend it ?
deadpool 99 absolutely, while I do like long scale basses, I get more use out of short scales basses because it’s easier to reach octaves and the necks are a little thinner which makes it faster to play notes. I’d recommend getting the Ibanez Mikro, it’s pretty inexpensive at around $200 and it works perfectly.
@@zacevans1683 thanks 🤗
I would play that
so does Stanley Clarke..
why the short scale basses are not a mainstream? do they have any disadvantages comparing to the 34'' scale basses?
I use a Fender musicmaster SS as my main bass, I don't see any disadvantages.
The ONLY disadvantage to a short scale bass is that you sacrifice some of the upper end harmonics. To me, that is not a disadvantage, because I prefer the low end punch when I play.
I have plenty of long scale basses, but I prefer to play with my short basses more.
I would imagine they don’t handle down tuning as well
Supro bass...my favorite vintage bass is a 65 Fender PBass and a Gibson Eb-3
Supro Bass... 1962 P Bass would be my favorite. I have a similar one but it's not as good looking as that!
Supro bass. . . I'd love to get a Gibson Ripper, but fat chance of finding a left-handed one.
sub kilohertz oscillations Considering the body shape of rippers you could probably just string it backwards
Hey you’re the guy that does the bass covers of the guy that does the drum covers. Keep up the good work man!
sub kilohertz oscillations
Change it your self
Easy
All you need is a new nut.
Re string it , done .
sub kilohertz oscillations = finding lefty basses is a bitch unless you got deep pockets.i got two epiphones (can't afford gibsons)that had to be modified for left-hand , the eb-0 & viola , which sounds like a cannon...just a tip.
Supro bass... my favorite vintage bass would be a Kramer "the duke"
Supro bass... höfner 500/1 violin bass ...it's the real deal
Supro Bass... My favorite vintage bass is the Ampeg AUB-1.... Man the first time i saw it i fell in love. Everything from the scroll headstock to the tone mix together into something insanely unique and beautiful (just like the supro) Plus Rick Danko played one!!!!!!!!! keep up the great work!
Supro bass... 1972 Fender Jazz Bass
ditto!
Supro Bass! I fell in love with a fretless Rickenbacker that a band teacher had in 1973. The body looked a lot like that solid ash Supro Huntington 2. I checked them out on the Supro website and all six versions look great. The ash is my favorite and the solid mahogany is my second favorite. The four video demos on the Supro site are impressive. Doug Wimbish gets some crazy outer space effects out of that vintage style bass!
I'm finally learning to play. Getting ready to drop the hammer on the 14 day trial now that the end of year work is wrapping up and I can devote some time to it. I've put this off too long because I knew I didn't have the time that I needed to devote to it, but I just made the time! Bass is my bucket list. Thanks for the great content on RUclips. It's a great introduction to your online courses.
Supro Bass ... my favorite is the Fender Bass VI which as the matter of fact is a 6 strings short scale bass
Supro bass... Hi Scott. My kimbara Ripper . I was lucky enough to learn on it my best mates bought it for me in 87, favourite bass before it was stolen in December 2014 - 1970s Kimbara Ripper in maple ,even with it's broken neck what I would do for that bass back!!!- SO it's got to be the bass it was modelled on The Gibson Ripper . Great Channel Thanks for all the fab lessons.
Supro Bass... Gibson EB1 is my favourite, Scott. Love the raw tone and the removable peg in the end of the body that allowed the option of playing it upright is a good laugh :)
Supro bass... My favourite vintage style bass is the Gibson eb-3. Such unique sound! :)
Have some wonderful holidays, Scott. Cheers
Supro Bass ... my fav, atm, is the Peavey T40, in any color 😋🎸
Supro Bass ... my favorite vintage bass is my Gibson EB-3 copy ... a Global, I think. Short scale MIJ from the '70s. I'm in the middle of modding it with a 5-string 34-inch neck. So I could use another short scale bass! Thanks for your great videos and school!
Supro Bass... love the style of the 1970's gibson signature bass, need to add one to the collection!
Supro Bass . . . My favorite vintage bass is the grandfather of all Rickenbackers; The 1958-9 Model 4000 Rickenbacker with its neck-though design and horseshoe pickup was one of the earliest challengers to the Fender Precision back in the day and was Rickenbacker's intro into the bass market.
Supro Bass... my favourite vintage style bass is an early 60's fender p bass. Can't beat that classic fender sound and style. Tobacco burst with tortoise pick guard, looks and sounds so sweet.
Supro bass ... 4001 Rickenbacker 1973. Happy Holidays everybody & thank you for your great work!
Supro bass... By far Hofner 500/1. I started playing them about 5 years ago and fell in love. I've had 3 of them since and currently have a '71. They play like a dream, sound cool, and are soooo light on the shoulder during a gig. My hands are small and I'm getting on in years so they are also stiff. The short scale doesn't stress out my finger joints like a 34 inch scale. I rarely play my standard basses anymore except for recording. I just finished building a short scale Warmoth last month and I'm digging that. The Bartolini PJ set up sounds fantastic! Have done some recording with it and it comes across great.
Supro Bass...My favorite vintage-style bass is the Hofner Club Bass. I have ruined my left shoulder over the years and a few years back tried a short scale bass by buying a used 30inch scale Gretsch to see if I could play it with less pain than a 34inch Jazz-style bass. This began my love affair with short scale basses and my personal favorite to play is my Hofner Club Bass, the Ignition (inexpensive Asian version) series iteration of the classic, Les Paul shaped Club bass. Unlike everyone else that immediately puts a set of flatwound strings on the Hofner, I prefer to use D'Addario ENR71M half-round strings so that I get a tone somewhere between the dull thud of the hollow bass with flats and a modern bass where the highs ring through. It's the best of all possible worlds to me for bass tone. I'm loving your bass lessons, Scott. Not only the knowledge, but just as importantly, to me, your enthusiasm for bass shines in every video and gets me fired up to practice and play my bass.
Supro bass... love the old Burns Bisons: wicked-looking basses!
I have a few high end full size basses, but I keep an Ibanez Mikro next to my desk to pick up several times throughout the day when I have time because it's just so damn much fun to play! I will likely sell my others and get another short scale.
Supro bass... my fave vintage style bass is the 1962 Fender Jazz Bass, which of course many people will vote for. Had one, loved it. My fave vintage styled NEW bass is the DiPinto Belvedere Standard Bass
Supro Bass... 1971 Alembic Series II, the omega cut away looks so cool and the level of tone control is amazing!
Supro bass... Höfner 500/1 violin bass. I love the combination of a hollow body with the short scale- really slurpy sound! lovely all the way up the neck and has a great organic sound for melodic playing! still, love Fender basses but man these Höfners sing!
Supro bass... my favorite vintage bass is the fender 1972 jazz bass because of the magic of that year and this bass can change or take the jazz to another level
supro bass... the Burns Bison bass.. it rocks.. keep on the good job Scott, cheers
Supro Bass.... I have two. 1)Rickenbacker 4001 - 1976 Jet Black. Love the sound... Just blows me away.
2) Fender 1962 bass 6 sunburst - I would love to hear what this sounds like... If I ever get to play one I will definitely do a video! With a backup ;)
Supro bass... definitely my favorite goes to the FRAMUS "Sorento".... FRAMUS is for me the best bass manufacturer of old basses...
Muchos Saludos Scott and thanks for your great Chanel. Keep going my friend...
Supro bass... the Rickenbacker 4003S without a doubt - a Chris Squire signature for preference. Glorious!
Supro bass... 1969 Fender Jazz Bass. Love the sound and the look 👌 could just be me but it just seems so elegant. Distressed sunburst takes it to a new level
Surprise bass... My favorite vintage old school bass is the 1960’s Supro airlines pocket bass. Coolest short scale bass on earth and I would LOVE ❤️ to have one!!
Supro bass...my favorite vintage style bass is the 1960-'62 Fender Jazz Bass 'cause my mind blows up when I play it (I hope you know that feeling)
Saludos from Chile!!
Supro Bass... My favorite Vintage bass would be the Adam wojcik hofner 500/8 bass. I love the sound out of that bass and bass guitar of that style. They just sound soo clean and cool.
Supro Bass... My favorite vintage style bass(short-scale) is the EB series(SG style) as I first learned guitar as a child and am currently in the market for a short scale. Also love the looks of the Gretsch 2200 junior jet series. MUST say that this Supro Huntington short scale is THE coolest bass I have ever seen 😳. It would get SO much use if I won that
Supro bass... My favorite vintage bass is the Hofner violin bass. I love the sound and feel of those things!
Supro bass...my favourite vintage bass guitar is the Hofner violin bass, they look so cool and sound so nice!
My favorite bass guitar is the Ricky I was about 13 years old when my sister's boyfriend who played in a top 40 band played a backer Ricky lol!! Allowed me to play his blue Rckenbacker and I was blown away with how easy playing bass was going to be
Supro bass... My favorite vintage bass is the Gibson EB-0. Some models have banjo-type (straight in through the back) tuning pegs and others have the clover leaf that we all know and love. The EB-0 was one of the first basses I ever saw someone play live and that is the reason I listed it here. I suppose it has a special place in my bass heart.
I've always been curious about this model, I've yet to come by one in the wild yet... but I can dream! Lol, I'm a Mustang and Hagstrom bass guy myself, and also have a long scale Jaguar bass, but have played many Jazz and Precisions basses, Peavey Basses of the T variety from the 70's (each cerved from whole trees! Lol no, they just weigh that much)and concur, long scale loses too much punch. The shorts live in this powerful clarity area I can't do without tone wise, and they also can make lines that just aren't conducive to joy when playing them on a longer scale live, or maybe even not possible due to stretch to fret increase on a shorter scale. I find myself wanting to play more bass than guitar, my original instrument since 94', since getting the short scales.
Supro bass... my favorite vintage style bass is the Fender Mustang bass because that was my first bass when I started playing bass about 1972. Few years later I stopped. Started again playing in 2010 and last year I bought a reissue Mustang bass again and it was amazing.
Got one!
Recently got hold of one of these, now part of the Warwick(x3), Cort, Ashbory and Kala family> Very cool bass and a joy to play. Dont need another the same.
Supro Bass...my favorite vintage bass is the Hofner violin bass, like McCartney played. A friend let me play his and my girlfriend liked it so much, she bought me one for my birthday. I have a nice Jazz Bass and a Ric 4003, but I haven’t touched either since I played the Hofner. I guess I have small hands. 😄
Supro bass... I love the Gibson grabber bass-the sliding pickup is too cool!!
Supra Bass... My favorite vintage style are the Carl Thompsons from the 1970's. Thanks for the SWEET BASS!!!
Supro bass... my favorite vintage bass is fender 1958 precision bass with "blonde" color, love the way it looks and how it sounds
Supro Bass... would love to own that bass. Beautiful. Also, I love a ‘67 Guild Starfire.
Supro Bass... My favorite vintage style bass is the Gibson EBO. It gave a low end sound quality that just rocked in the 60’s soul music. That Supro Bass took me back. Love to own a bass like that.
Supro Bass... My favorite vintage bass was Gibson 2017 EB Bass T Satin Vintage Sunburst! It looks and sounds so good!
Supro bass...My favorite vintage style bass is the 1966 Gibson EB-2. I used to have one in high school during the 1980's. Love the short scale basses of the 1960's and the 1970's. and I got little fingers and it helps. Straps usually have to be worn high & short it's a preference.
Supro Bass... You're going to love this. Since we are speaking about short scale basses. Which I have quite a few of in parts. I have found one of the rarest short scale production basses ever. They are super hard to find but I have bought three in the last month for under $150 US. I missed one in the original case for two hundred bucks that I'm still kicking myself for. I am fascinated by these things. They're made in Taiwan for Harmony when they where going downhill. Drum roll please..... it's a Harmony H-906. it's some sort of mash-up between a heavy metal headstock hockey stick thing and a Ripper slash almost StratoGibson like cutaway body. It has fake humbucking pickups on it. I'm pretty sure they're single coils even though I have not tore them apart yet. It sounds amazingly huge. I'm playing it with flatwounds and with a pic. The low E is a half-wound D'Addario and the other three are flat-wound DR lights 95 to 45. I put way too much thought into these things. But I'm completely and utterly in love. I want that Supro. I'm a big Harmony fan and have buckets of gold foil pickups. I still have not made my dream short scale with them. But that pretty much looks like what I'm looking for. Pick me! Pick me! Pick me me me me me! oh yeah I'm also playing it through a Vox Valvetronic multi effect through a Markbass II head and a 8x10 SVT cabinet. You would be so proud. LOL... DWolfe
Supro bass... Three favourite basses: Ampeg AEB-1, an old Fender Jaguar and the fantastic 1967/68s KAWAI Violin Basses - its deck is really made like a violin, you can play with a bow, very cool pickups!
Supro Bass... Favourite vintage bass is definitely a 1974 Fender Jazz Bass. Cheers, brother.
Supro bass... I love the look of the Gibson Thunderbird vintage bass, I own an Epiphone Thunderbird but truthfully I have been playing around more with my daughter's Ibanez Mikro but that isn't vintage at all. Would love to gift my daughter with the Supro bass for her little hands and get her rocking with some retro feeling gear :)
Supro Bass .....Probably my favorite old school bass would be my Gibson Grabber.Something cool about them would be that even though it has one pick-up, it slides on a little track so you can position it for the sound you are trying to get in whatever you are doing style or whatnot
Supro Bass...Loved my first bass ... big hollow body Harmony ?H22?.. same as Muff Winwood .. and my second.. A solid body Hagstrom with a red vinyl covering with the plastic swimming pool 😬 Both short scale and both very cool 😎
I am looking at buying a Fender Mustang short scale bass. I believe they are 30". Do you have any opinion of them? I got attracted to them as I bought a 3/4 size XS precision bass to give to a school in Sri Lanka. It was cheap AUD$289 and seemed to be made well. The compression of the fret and string distances was an issue❤ for me but not for kids I hope. Anyway it was very comfortable around my neck and light weight, which attracted me to the fender Mustang. You don't have to stretch out for the head, money notes so much!
Supro bass.. My favorite vintage style bass is your P Bass of Doom. Love it so much. The sound just blow my mind. Those relic also 100% beauty for me 😍
Supro bass... I've been rocking on the sweet little 2016 Mustang. That PJ setup makes it versatile and plays really punchy while looking like a pawn shop Mustang that everyone has in their kit. Toured with it last summer and it held up great!
I have gigged the 2016 Jaguar short scale several times this year, only moderately modded. New bridge, complete shielding. Great little bargain player. Really nice neck, for the price.
Supro Bass... I've always been a fan of the Hofner 500 and Club basses. I've been away from playing for a long while and am looking to get back into it. This Supro in addition to being really cool, looks like it would be ideal for my needs.
Supro bass... My guess is that the competition isn't open now but wanted to comment this regardless, I have been set on buying a fender mustang bass. Short scale too. And is very closely related to my favourite vintage bass. The fender musicman. But now I've seem this thing I am in love!!!
Supro bass...Danelectro Longhorn. Leslie West's brother used to play one when they both were in The Vagrants (50 yrs ago). It looked so cool...
My son has a mini like this. We had it made for him when he was in grade school. Its all black, and in great shape. Supro Bass... the Double Bass Cello. Lol, he started on a really little one of those too.
Supro bass...
My favourite vintage bass must be a 1966 fender jazz bass 3 tone sunburst. I don't know what it is about the, the sound is killer, the body of it is beautiful. And combine that with the shielding over the pickups it's just awesome
Supro bass... vintage Fender Jazz from 70's. Classic stuff. And also Rickenbacker 4001, fell in love with it, when i saw Cliff's Anesthesia...
Supro bass dot dot dot ;) my favorite vintage short scale was my dads Hagstrom F400, great weighting for a short scale and a killer look. I especially like the switches for pickup selection and tone and one master volume knob
Supro bass... I am an educator myself, who would love the opportunity to teach with this little wonder! My favorite vintage model off the top of my head would likely be an Alembic Stanley Clarke, in coco bolo, ziricote, or another dark wood with gold hardware. Mad love for the 3 piece design, those deep, symmetrical horns, and of course the short scale! I'm about 5'2 and some change with diminutive, little baby fingers, and although I love my Jaguar, I'm really itching for a nice shortie.
the Rickenbacker 4001,got really gangs of cool features, like the stereo pick ups and the adjustable mute on the bridge,it was my second bass after my jazz bass copy,I loved the rick so I got a nother one and made it fretless.
Supro Bass...My favorite bass is a Peavey Foundation. I really like the sound of the super ferrite pickups!
Supro bass... My favorite vintage style bass is a 70’s fender jazz bass. That bridge pickup position gives an extra “crispy” treble that makes me crazy
Supro Bass... My favorite vintage bass is the Hofner Violin Bass, so many great tunes recorded by Paul Mccartney back in those days.
Years ago when we had a group . I had a Les paul Junior SG style I think 61. My Brother was the bass player. One day on our Bicycles we came across a EB3 in the window of a Pawnshop. We Liked it because it had the same shape of my Guitar. Little did we know at the time It was becoming a Legend in it's own right. This had to be around 68-69. Any who I fooled around with it and I loved how essay it was to play besides the sound it produced. It just so happened that we fell into playing a lot Cream. I dig your Videos Scott. c];-)
SUPRO BASS: I've been pretty hot for a 60's Precision w/ flatwounds through a Flip-Top Ampeg; super warm and round tone. But I recently started checking out the short scale Mustangs which led me to this wonderful gem. Really dig this Supro. Gotta get my hands on one soon!
Supro bass.. My fave vintage bass is the Fender Jazz, vintage natural finish with the big block inlays- amazing sound and style- love your channel✌😊
Supro Bass... always loved the Mustang Bass. But this Supro is looking/sounding pretty amazing
