Mine is a 40hp Johnson. I spent a bit of time in the driveway performing just the first three steps outlined in this video. (I don't have a timing light or tach, etc to go further right now.) Just the adjustments outlined in those three steps made an enormous and positive difference! No choke, no starting fluid, no fuss - just primed it a couple of pumps and it fired up strong!! I also closed the needle valves and started by opening them 2 1/2 turns to begin, and have been adjusting the idle speed because it now idles just a bit high.. Before I watched this video, once I got it running, my motor would sputter, shake, and stall out if I tried to idle. Many thanks!!
Cannot recommend this enough! Adjusted mine, had orange paint on the linkages, and they were miles out, I took measurements incase it wouldn’t run or I made it horrendously worse! Adjusted as per specs, starts up within half a second now! Wouldn’t start before without much cranking and choke and raising the idle lever. Much appreciation and thanks!
You will probably never know how many people this helped. For me It's been HUGE! Thank you for taking the time to help us all get our motors running as best they can.
Man you are a life saver this helped me soo much i didnt adjust the wot stop and my butterflies got stuck wide open while on the lake went through your videos again and saw you had this video as well this helped me solve my issue thank you soo much!
To me, there was never a longer lasting and more durable outboard than the 2 stroke OMC motors. Taken care of, they would last a lifetime. Thanks for the video.
That was perfect. I was looking at my evinrude 40 , 1999 model. None of the arrows are lined up. I will be doing this soon. Thanks again for sharing this.
You have literally saved my outboards, I have 2 40s and here material and service guides are not common. Amazingly i have tuned one according to the video and the other from an outboard mechanic. Suffice to say, she has never idled as nicely and the throttle advance is much smoother. Once again, thank you! You saved me thousands...
I have the exact same motor from 79. Have the manual also if you need anything looking up! How did you get on with the link and sync? I'm struggling!..
Now if I could just learn what test prop I need for my 91' Evinrude 40 horse I would be all set. Awesome video, YOU saved me so much time from trial and error.
Worst case is low compression, and the engine not being able to produce the vacuume to draw fuel in at idle. This is common on well used 9.9 & 15 HP engines. Clean the carbs, do the throttle sinc, amd adjist low speed needles, and if thw engine is good, you'll be fine.
*** just an update. I paid for the OMC shop manual, it lists the spark control rod as 2.5” or 63.5mm! Looking into this I should of seen this! Might be why my outboard idles at 2k rpm lol (the video states 5.3cm!) Really req a revision! I had to trim the bolt lol might have to add a longer one now! 2000 50hp version. Anyone PM me if you want the manual, save you £25!
Hoping you’ll see this salski92@gmail.com looking to get my hand on that omc manual I bought an online manual and unfortunately it’s not good at all waste of $40
I want to thank you for these videos you put up particularly this video,, I've got a question do you have a part number or something that would that would get me a test propeller for my 40 horse 1990 model engine Evinrude? Thank you
Hey Brandon, any chance you have a video from OMC for the linkage adjustment on a 1983 Johnson 50hp 2 cylinder? Thanks for all your videos, very helpful!!
Thanks for the video can’t thank you enough.you need to relabel video for Johnson 60 two cylinder. No videos for that model it would help a lot of people who have bad running 60.
Good morning, thank you for your precious videos. I'm wondering if you have anything to adjust the Johnson 70tl linkage in 1995. It's a great engine, but I have a low-speed carburetion problem. Thanks, Niko
Hi this video Does. Help. I've used it. It does not work per spec. And leaves out steps. It's wrong info! Do you think this ignition. Self advances the static wot timing setting. Vs adjusting at 5000 rpm?
I did everything to spec and my 50hp 99 Johnson will not fire was having issues before with idle screws had orange paint were way off but would run on the water no problem now I can’t get her to run and I have unburned fuel and oil coming out the exhaust idk what to do I’m at my wits end with this motor! Please help !
I'm working on my 1979 100HP Evinrude doing the same adjustments. Do you have the linkage measurements for a 1979 V4? I have the SEALOC manual but it is missing the rod measurements.
I took my boat to a 40yr OMC mechanic and he said the arrows mean nothing. It’s all about getting the timing with the timing gun. You have to tweak it to each engine. When he was finished, none of my measurements came out like the video shows. Thoughts?
The critical measurement is 2 1/16 " from there it is 20 deg btdc and 2 deg atdc. Falls into place. Not much adjustment from there. Or the linkage binds!
Years of collecting literature, these came along somehow. some dude has been downloaded them, and uploading them as his own, thats when I stopped posting them.
1995 the spark rod initial setting length is 2.5in according to omc manual not sure the exact year this measurement changes 93???? everything else is the same. use video this and Joe Reeves timing method set idle mixer in water with clean carbs..
I have a 1987 evinrude 40 and I cannot get the linkage and timing tuned correctly so it will not die when I put it into gear. Do you happen to have a how to video for this motor? Your videos are awesome. Thank you. I'm Frank in Springfield MO.
Hi Frank I’m in Missouri too. And also have a 1987 that I’ve been restoring, you can find a manual at boat info.no also Google Joe Reeves method for high speed timing. This old outboard has a few videos on it I just don’t have the camera equipment to shoot videos nor do I want to learn how to edit them.
Hi. I have a evinrude 50 1997. I did everything like in your video. Engine sounds good on high rpm, but on low rpm don't want to work. Do you know where could be a problem?
Not sure about year?Acouple guys referring to it here the Tube for there 30hp's.Could be in the 90's when it came out.I can try and reach out to the guy that first mentioned it.He may have been a Evinrude Tech?
@@BrandonsGarageI'm just curious, mine is a te40eletb and when I go off the manual for my sync it starts and then dies, rebuilt the carbs and replaced all fuel lines, would it hurt to try it this way with these measurements?
When idle jets are truly clean and u do these steps it should idle good make sure ur rollers haven't fell apart either most have after 31 years. I try to leave timing in factory paint marked spots usually close enough.
I have 48 an all this is great for me except one thing: the special timing propeller can't be found for sale! Everyone working on these motors needs timing an timing can't be done with out special prop, so we need a replacement!
