Mine is a 40hp Johnson. I spent a bit of time in the driveway performing just the first three steps outlined in this video. (I don't have a timing light or tach, etc to go further right now.) Just the adjustments outlined in those three steps made an enormous and positive difference! No choke, no starting fluid, no fuss - just primed it a couple of pumps and it fired up strong!! I also closed the needle valves and started by opening them 2 1/2 turns to begin, and have been adjusting the idle speed because it now idles just a bit high.. Before I watched this video, once I got it running, my motor would sputter, shake, and stall out if I tried to idle. Many thanks!!

    Cannot recommend this enough!
Adjusted mine, had orange paint on the linkages, and they were miles out, I took measurements incase it wouldn’t run or I made it horrendously worse!
Adjusted as per specs, starts up within half a second now! Wouldn’t start before without much cranking and choke and raising the idle lever.
    Much appreciation and thanks!

      Glad it helped!
Seems like mine fires up with half turn of the flywheel too.
Really make one feel comfortable with the engine.

    • @BrandonsGarage

Worst case is low compression, and the engine not being able to produce the vacuume to draw fuel in at idle.
This is common on well used 9.9 & 15 HP engines.
Clean the carbs, do the throttle sinc, amd adjist low speed needles, and if thw engine is good, you'll be fine.

*** just an update. I paid for the OMC shop manual, it lists the spark control rod as 2.5” or 63.5mm! Looking into this I should of seen this! Might be why my outboard idles at 2k rpm lol (the video states 5.3cm!)
Really req a revision! I had to trim the bolt lol might have to add a longer one now!

What about a johnson 88 hp

  • @christiandam9000

I have a 1997 Johnson 40hp. I trying to do all these linkage adjustments but my spark controle rod can't get shorter than approximately 5,6cm even when i use all of the adjustment. When i started the adjustment it was set to a distance of 6,4cm and the engine was running good. Practially all other adjustments was also way off the specs in this video when i started and i have adjusted those. Haven't tested the new adjustments jet. Any ideas about whats wrong?? Also the spark controle rod doesn't look like the one in the video but like the one in this vide: ruclips.net/video/-lAGytSUeW4/видео.html
If it makes any difference i'm from Europe and i'm guessing the engine is as well.

Hello. I have exactly the same problem. With 6,7mm spark rod, spark is way late. With 5,3mm rod linkage goes stuck. Parts SHOULD be right ones. I have checked. I have noticed that when the spark rod is 5,3mm spark timing would be right. But cannot do that. 2 years I have been with this problem. Engine is Johnson BJ40EETB

Top one for tiller model, bottom for non-tiller model.
