Love your videos Jay and enjoy watching them. May the lord bless and protect you and Jen on the homestead
Awesome progress on the property , and yes I feel that a tractor investment would be a game changer for you . One advantage would be you can use it year round ! Won't be parked for 5-6 months 👍
So true
I’ve been watching yours vids of late and really enjoy your stick-to-it life of being off the grid. I was born & raised in Michigan down around Lansing area. Spent many summers in the UP where most everything is sand based.
I don’t know anything about shelters or root cellars. However, recommend removing the trees near the edges of your hole. You don’t want a storm or tornado knocking them over on top of your future shelter and trapping y’all in the shelter. I spent several years in the Navy in Submarines. Make sure you have at least 2 exits that are strong and positioned so as not to be blocked by debris.
Bill
Smart...appreciate that my friend., and thank you for your service.
We have a TYM Tractor 2515H and absolutely love it. We are in Michigan also (Williamsburg/Kalkaska area) and bought it through John in Buckley at United Truck Sales. We have off-grid property (16 acres of Red Pines) and our common comment to each other is "what did we ever do without this tractor" . What a life saver it has been.
TYM may even sponsor you 😉. They sponsor many RUclipsrs. Let us know if you're in our area and you can take it for a test drive at our pines 😊
ya the tractor has been great! hopefully we can figure out which one we want. IT would be a dream to have someone sponsor us and let us use one. lol
You did a great job felling the trees and operating the backhoe!
Thanks buddy
Big relief getting those future problem trees down, nice work. A newer tractor would be a game changer for you guys,.see you next time
My daughter lives in tornado alley in Texas and have a shelter in their bkyd. That's pretty common there although the storms see to be moving east over Dallas.
Glad you're getting a tractor. All the off grid videos I watch they wind up getting a tractor at some point. A Very handy toolbar 🚜 Hope no storms come your way.❤
🐻 RUN 🏃♀️ ♥️.
lol or bang on the windows 😂😂😂
First, Congratulations on your expert tree felling and safety tips for sure! You did the right thing borrowing a machine, now you know what it can and can't do and you have a better idea of what you want to look for when purchasing. The bear family is hysterical and they are known to do that to bird feeders and will be back now that they have found food. Probably bring them in for the night going forward for a while of no sightings. A big corrugated pipe would be nice and easy for you to use, you still have to close off the ends and seal. But easier than concrete. Look at atlas survival shelters for some ideas of how to layout the floor and entrance. He has a you tube channel.
Omg 3 bears in the garden ! , it’s time to buy more freezers to have space for the bear burgers . Greetings from 🇳🇱 the Netherlands
Lol, if only we could be lucky to get a bear tag!
Great job on the trees, Jay. You’ve obviously done your homework re the process. Homesteading is always a learning process!😍🇨🇦
Yep, we have the same tree and bear problems at our cabin. Unfortunately didn't think about the tree hitting the cabin until after the fact.
I guess I'm not alone then, lol
Oh my gosh the bears, a bit too close for comfort for me, glad we don’t have them in the wild here anymore, I have no clue how to build a storm shelter Jay, we have some bad storms here but not as bad as the USA does, gonna be interesting to watch how you do yours, tfs x Julie 🇬🇧
Thanks Julie for watching my friend
Root cellar is a great idea! I have seen a few channels with this setup. There is a guy in Saskatchewan that stores some of his food underground. I'm not sure if he has a video about it. Ill check. Also... doesn't A different kind of quiet have a root cellar? Anyway, look forward to seeing this progress! We unfortunately will always have to build above ground...unless we blast some rock! Oooh...that would be fun. 😂😂😂. Good job on the trees Jay. Those darn rotten poplars are awful to deal with
Thanks for watching :D working on ideas for the cellar still we will figure out something soon .
I was watching as you were digging with the backhoe and said to myself, a grave does not have to be that deep…
😂😂😂😂
Stay safe and take care Jay and Jen 🙏🏻God Bless 🫶🏻Appreciate you my friends!
I understand a root cellar and storm shelter but you have to think about getting out of it if a tree falls on your exit, just a thought! Great idea just plan it out well! Love the bears! Looks like you got use to the tractor fairly quickly! ✌🏼❤️🙏🏼
good points
Bear bear 🐻 🐻❄
BAD BEARS.....I guess the feeders have to be higher....but the cub was cute
TIMBER.....good job felling the trees
😃😃 looks like spring has lit a fire under your behind😃😃.....busy busy busy....cheers
hi guy,s it,s phil on my other computer. great vid. interested in what tractor your gonna pick. these are very interesting times for you guy's. your keeping us on the edge of our seats for sure. Phil
Thanks for watching still looking at tractors..
A cub!
We don’t get bears here in Australia but often had feral foxes after our chickens. We had to bury wire netting 3 ft in the ground to stop them digging under it. Here introduced animals are a real problem.
stay safe. thanks for watching .
Oh, baby bear, so cute ❤
cute from far away lol
I always thought a small tractor like the one you borrowed would be ideal. 4x4 for sure. You can do a lot with the back ho and you could plow snow with the bucket too. Also lifting or moving things. Only bad part is the price of those things, LOL.
yes very pricy lol
Not sure about cost comparisons but a six or eight foot culvert would be a very easy and safeway to go. Also, probably fairly easy to install.Just drop it and back fill it
ya, like that idea just gotta find where to purchase it!
Why do bears have to be so cute 😂 we had one snooping around last night and when we turned the light on he looked dazed and confused and just sat there for 3 minutes until I told Greg he better scare the sh** out of him so he doesn’t come back
they're cute for sure, lol. hopefully yours haven't been back. ours have been MIA since they came by the one time.
Is that big hole for another outhouse, lol!!! That tractor 🚜🚜🚜 will definitely help you dig a deeper hole next time around. Not saying thaat the last hole wasn't deep enough, just saying.
I don't blame you for wanting to install a storm shelter, especially with all the bad weather we've been having. Praying for your safety as well as your animals and your entire property.
Awww a baby bear. Lol! I know they can be a nuisance but how cute!!! 🥰
cute but dangerous especially with mama lol
@@OffgridwithJayandJen I hear ya. We see the bears on our cameras all the time but never that close to the cabin. Did you see our trail cam compilation? 12 different animals in our 7 minute video. Pretty cool. Have a great Sunday! 😁
Haven't seen it yet will have to check it out!
You seemed to handle that tractor quite well. This has been a good video. Thanks.
The thing about the pipe is it'll only be a storm shelter. If you made it square and solid you could use it as a root cellar AND a safe place to shelter
Quick thoughts on the shelter, please don't do a dry pour for your structure, and use rebar. It's too important to skimp on it. Drainage can also be a problem, some people's shelters have actually been lifted by water seeping under. I'm going to be watching with great interest, it's a project we're thinking about too. All the best to you both, and the pups too.
Don't think we'd do dry pour in it, just gotta figure out what we're doing, many different ways to do so and have to figure out what works best for us.
Smart ideas Jay!❤️❤️🐾🐾
Thanks for sharing the thunderstorm because I do not get that here in Arizona!! And holy crap with the bears...yikes!!!!
Glad we could share! Thanks for watching!
I also seen them building one on keeping it Dutch in the latest video
I’d say first thing is to drop those trees that are around that hole before you ever crawl into it . Also sand is quite unstable so for gosh sake be careful that it doesn’t collapse while you are inside . Try to at least shore up the sides with some kind of bracing. And use Jen as your spotter as you work. Never alone. ❤😊😊
We have lots of ideas, just figuring out what works best and how to do it !
Think you should build root cellar/bug out shelter in your lawn by your side porch, no trees. Just a thought.
You gotta put a lucky coin in there 😄
:D we put your coins somewhere! There will be a video soon with them!
As far as either a storm shelter or a root cellar one concern I see right off is the trees around you. Even one tree could be bad at either crushing the top, or simply trapping you in it. I look forward to seeing what you come up with.
Good points! We are still working on ideas!
Good points! WE are working on ideas still
Love the vids, Had you guys thought a container for a shelter? not sure if that would be possible or not,
I don't know we would be able to get a container up here, it would have to be down at camp. Hill is way to steep for any big machine/truck
I'd look for a small quonset hut for the hole or find a small used steel shed.
Good ideas! still brainstorming
have the 30 0 6 ready
Im no expert on tractor brands to get but its a GREAT investment for you all Jay...great video thanks for sharing
Thanks 👍
cheer's
I’ve watched a lot of videos on bunkers and root cellars and you need to put drainage tile around it and stone
Home stead rescue is a place to see it done
Check out Simple Living Alaska. They purchased a Branson tractor. I think they drove down from Alaska to pick it up - not sure where they got it. Anyway, they seem to really like the quality and durability. Theirs might be more than you need but likely the brand has other models. Good luck!
They got it in Oregon
Just wandering was Jen thinking about knocking on your head when u said knock on wood 😂
Lol
Yes a tractor would be a great investment. Not sure how you'd get down into the culvert? Ladder? ❤
Not sure really....something to figure out
Take advantage of the truck and dig fish pond 😅
lol, jen likes that idea.
Make a cedar subtick tank.
Have to look into that
Wow…bear and grin it.
Pardon the ignorance, was wondering what geographical location yall are in. Im new here. Team work makes the dream work👍
Hey buddy....we are in Northern Michigan
Check for TYM tractor. They are pretty cheap and pretty good. We got them in canada pretty sure you can find a dealer in the USA too!. Keep it up i love watching your videos
Thanks for the tip!
Never put a root cellar near trees. If a storm comes through with high winds, the trees can fall over the cellar & trap you or crush you. It should be in a hillside with no dangers nearby to trap you.
Makes sense
We thought you were digging a hole for your water tank so your water won't freeze during the winter. have to bury the water tank a least 5 ft deeper then the ground surface
I heard new holland makes a good Tractor
heard the same, many tractor brands out there!
lay plastic cover over top and down side , before back fill and cover in dirt
Check with outdoors and other the Morgan, he know everything about tractors!
Yes I agree he does!
Bears are a pain with bird feeders, including hummingbird feeders! Went nose to nose with one over my feeders! Had one hanging from the soffit of my roof and heard something tapping on the window. Opened the curtain and there stood a huge black bear with my hummingbird feeder in his front paws! I was less than 3’ from him and started beating the window! He let go and ran off. The next night he came back and crushed the feeder.. they are a real pain 😡
Ya I don't want them to learn to keep coming back
That’s a tough choice to make. A new tractor would be awesome. I know it’s a little bit more money, but a skid steer with tracks would be nice too. I think the tractor might be a little more affordable
I think so too. Another thing is there are way more affordable nice used tractors than skidsteers as well. Hard to make a choice
I would check out Shawn James or some of the late Mike Oehler builds for underground structures if your not opposed to building a root cellar with wood.
James is fake! Pretending to live at the camp, when in reality he lives in town near me
Sad to see what happened to the birdfeeders, those darn bears! I hope they were salvageable at least. If so, they know where to find them now. Will you have to move them someplace else ? Or it doesn't matter, they will find them no matter where they are? Glad Jay enjoyed his borrowed toy, he looked like a pro using it. 👍 Looking forward to see what you decide to use for the root cellar/shelter.
Bird feeders going away at night. Into the pole barn.....hope they stay away from the barn
Cement convert build a nine ends
Bears were brave coming up eating.
Note to self: put away the bird feeders at Ight. 😀those rascally bears. Kinda cute mum and babies.🙂👍👍🇨🇦
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Thanks for watching!
I'm worried about that tree on the side of your hole, might it be a problem?
Ya, it is a bit close. Might have one more tree to take down. 🤔
Look up root cellar and bunker? On RUclips and as a person who uses tractors alot best I've found small home stead tractor kabota are found to be most popular and have the most attachments ie loader and rear end implements
Xin Chào Chúc bạn một ngày mới tốt lành
Thank you my friend and best wishes to you as well
Jay and Jen you know i always enjoy your videos. Here in Florida and building mid rises, and elevator pits my experience's will be way to expensive. A channel I also watch is Shawn James and he built a root cellar out of wood in the past year. Looking forward to seeing more of what you are planning. Also remember you are only as good as the tools you have. A tractor is in order. Most of the other videos I see people are choosing the TYM
James is all fake - aways looking to make more money 🤑
Mark 10:43-45

Thanks for watching ! Truly appreciate it!
🖐😎👍
take a look at my self reliance, he does great builds
things are looking good
@thecontainerguytv does in a hill bunkers and cellars
We will check them out thank you
Homestead rescue, the Rainey s have built a storm shelter out of huge concrete culvert pipes. I know they have various series on utube
show your storm on video
Great video for future plans 🇬🇧😊
Thanks for watching
The whole family.
Yep! lol
Thankfully they haven't been back
Are you guys living full time there now??
All but holidays and special occasions
It’s better isn’t it!! Off grid is the way to be!
I’m trying to get there but…. $$$$
@BobbyElliottav ya buddy, lots of people live off grid and still work normal jobs....or have many side hustles. Lol. Best wishes my friend
Bears love blueberries.
Thanks for watching!
