Really like your breakdowns, thank you! Question: I have noticed that Joel never picks up guns/ammo during the series, and after the crash and fight, they leave their backpacks and supplies in the vehicle. Is there a reason for this, or did the show leave that out on purpose? The logical thing to do would be to bring your supplies with you at all times, as well as to pick up guns/ammo whenever you have the chance. Thanks again
I've never seen TLOU, but the thumbnail for this post makes me think that Pedro Pascal would be perfect if they decided to remake the Death Wish films... He is low key, imposing... and he looks a bit like Charles Bronson.
It was so heartwarming to see Joel laugh at Ellie's joke at the end and to see them bond like that. Pedro pascal ,and Bella ramsay are nailing their dynamic, im really starting to care more about them!
another cool note, the fact Joel was on lookout at the beginning of the episode kept him awake all night, and the coffee let him stay awake to drive all day, but in the end he was so tired after everything including the stairs that he went into a deep recovery sleep that didn't allow him to hear them coming in. I love all the little details, thank you screen crush for always crushing these breakdowns!!!
Another thing I noticed from last episode during this week’s recap: On Bill’s letter, it says “To Whomever, but probably Joel”. BUT, above the “O” in whomever, the “M” is smaller and in different handwriting, so Bill probably wrote “whoever” but Frank added the “m” to make it grammatically correct, which fits their respective characters.
The J in Joel a little into the night looks like it was written as a T at first, like he was gonna write to Tess but changed his mind as he was writing
@Peniley Majorey I def agree w/ you, but this is a breakdown about all the Easter eggs and that is an Easter egg. so I figured I’d share even if the episode wasn’t good
Jeffrey Pierce, who plays Perry (Kathleen's right hand man) is the voice actor for Tommy in the games. Glad to see him involved and can't wait till we get to see Baker and Johnson as well.
@@kanejones99 yeah pretty much all the voice actors from the game have had some sort of part in the show, it's just a pity they didn't get the tess voice actress a part.
Small detail I noticed: The revolver Sam is holding at the end isn't loaded. So either they are short on supplies, they don't actually intend to harm Joel and Ellie, or Henry doesn't want it ruin Sam's innocence with needless violence and death.
a very good detail is when joel goes to sleep, he’s laying on his right side with his left ear up. when he wakes up to henry and sam, he’s on his left side with his right ear up. he couldn’t hear them coming.
My favourite part is how they respected the great dialogue from the game, but enhanced the story around them! It’s going to set a standard to all other adaptations.
When Ellie says the coffee smells like burnt shit, it’s a callback the second game. Dina says the line to Ellie when exploring the downtown Seattle area in the early game
You missed one. Joel keeps telling her that "people" are the real treat and the hunters have "we the PEOPLE" written on the side of the truck. Almost like they are telling us that they are the people Joel was warning us about.
the little moments between joel and ellie, especially with the puns, feel so warming and kind of remind me of me and my father, we also share a very similair humor, and he is also the quiet rock you can depend on while i tend to go a million miles an hour most of the time. . . . . . (im gonna need soooo many tissue boxes on standby for season 2)
The scene in the woods is so great. Joel is being harsh with Ellie because he has to be for her to be cautious. But when she asks if anyone is going to find them, he feels bad for scaring her so even though he had every intention of sleeping so he could drive ago day and all night, he ends up staying up and standing guard to make sure she's safe.
Nice parallel of what Joel said about Tommy, and him joining the fireflies ,and army vs what happens with Joel, and the guy begging for his life. Just young random guys joining causes they have no business being apart of ,and probably deep down just being scared.
The Scarecrow being outstanding in there field joke is somewhat thematic. Later in that scene, Joel would be standing and guarding them from raiders. Kind of like a scarecrow scaring off crows.
When the credits start rolling, they play the song from the Last of Us part 2. It's from one of the trailers where they show Ellie and Dina in the woods with others having a bonfire and playing the guitar.
Joel was not "sucking" on the fuel hose....he wisely used two hoses, and a rag to make the tank air tight. Instead of sucking, he blew air into the tank, forcing the fuel up through the second hose. Much better way than getting a mouth full of expiring gasoline!
16:40 Its actually not the first time Joel has tried ot protect Ellie from emotional harm. Remember he tried to protect her from seeing the mass grave last episode?
The biggest thing I saw is Sam’s revolver he’s pointing at Joel is very clearly not loaded😉 For those that don’t know if you look closely when it first cuts to Sam in Joel’s Point of View when it’s focused on his gun you can look straight through the cylinder and see light on both sides meaning there’s no bullets in there (granted he could have one shot in the ‘pipe’ as we can’t see if there’s a round in the barrel or not) but either way he doesn’t have a 2nd round in the gun. I am a firearms guy, not really into revolvers but i immediately picked up on that, the character of Joel runs a revolver & seems to have good firearms knowledge would likely pick up on that too🤔
2:32 I feel like this is trying to show the fact that sometimes we take things for granted. The show is set in a apocalyptic time where zombies called clickers look like fricking walking cauliflowers and society is basically gone. This shows that Ellie would have loved to live in a world with planes and video games and hotels, whereas Joel just talks about negative stuff. This shows how we should be happy for the fact that those things still exist and we have them.
In this episode Joel does not suck on the siphon pipe. He inserts a siphon pipe which would have to reach to the fuel and then adds a second pipe and seals the tank with a rag. By blowing on the second pipe you pressurize the tank and force fuel down the first starting the siphon. This probably wouldn't work in many recent cars as they have anti siphon devices (roll over valves or meshes). Also in the previous episode there was a reason to pick premium 91 fuel as it has either less or no ethanol which keeps the fuel stable for longer and less likely to absorb moisture. This condition was mentioned this week when Joel referred to the gas being mostly water.
One actor who stood out to me from the episode was the "Doctor" that Kathleen was questioning & ultimately killed. John Getz from the classic, "Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter's Dead." He played the sleazy Gus. I knew his face but couldn't place him. Nice little nugget.
You missed the most significant easter egg in this episode. The second in command of Kathleen (The bearded guy called Perry) is played by Jeffrey Pierce who did mocap and voiced 'Tommy' in The Last Of Us games.
I literally lolled when Ellie pulled out the punbook.. That and the "adult" magazine scene which was pretty much one to one from the game. Yet another superb episode.
I think Bella is great, but man... I'd rather replay the game than watch the show simply due to the fact that Ashley's delivery was just IMO so so much better, still to this day this game's cast is absolutely unbeaten
Outstanding video! I appreciate you marrying up the scenes to the game, I haven't played it since it came out. One subtlety maybe worth calling out is that I think Kathleen killed the doctor out of righteous indignation because she genuinely believes that the death of Brian could have been prevented if the doctor had told her where Henry was. That man died for no reason, and their community lost an invaluable resource - an actual doctor in the apocalypse, it's just maddening. Leaders need to keep their emotions in check, or step down.
One of the only things we know about Kathleen from the promo materials and interviews the actress has given is that Kathleen is canonically a bad leader who makes terrible decisions. She inherited leadership from her brother who she saw as a "Jesus figure" and there's supposed to be irony in that her rage after his death is what enabled the group to overthrow FEDRA but now she has no idea what she's doing and doesn't have any actual goals beyond "avenging" her brother, even though her brother wouldn't have wanted any of this.
@@Lespritdelescali They foreshadowed very efficiently how that community is going to be destroyed, most likely by infection, bc its leaders are so preoccupied with ~rooting out traitors~ and killing people that they cant be bothered with maintaining the quarantine.
Did I miss it? Did you not mention that the character of "Perry" (Kathleen's right hand man) is played by Jeffrey Pierce, who voiced Tommy in the game?
He said in the Easter Egg video for episode 1 that the radio guy is Perry played by Jeffrey Pierce. I remember going "huh, no shit" but looks like this is the real Perry/Jeffrey Pierce.
Melanie lynsky being in the show is so good! She’s amazing in yellow jackets too and I think it’s great seeing her look like a vulnerable person but she’s strong and a bit crazy
A cool Easter egg that was left out of this video was that the Jeffery Pierce the actor who plays Perry in the show is also the Voice actor for Tommy in the video game!
The gun that you mentioned was the M-16 Assault Rifle, but the gun that we see in the show is not the M-16 Assault Rifle, but it’s smaller cousin the M4A1 Assault/Carbine
Worth mentioning that the Hank Williams song is the same one playing in the game when the car crashes into the shop, and you have to fight the first four plus three hunters. Play it on grounded mode and you will be listening to the beginning of this song for about an hour until you get past it.
