I'm a colorist I can explain the HDR grading and why it sucks. They only use a tone mapping DCTL cranked up to 1000 nits and did not bother doing any kind of real grading work. That's why it looks atrocious. They should at least tried to tone down the skin tones... They also use an AI upscale tool such as Topaz video AI to erase the original grain structure and emulate a softer one with Film Convert or Dehancer. Again a very sloppy work that looks like it was done by an amateur.
The second I saw the upscale and the colors and I was like "Yup, I'm happy with my Special DVD Box Set". Sadly, I don't think they're going to top that anytime soon. I was disappointed in the Blu-ray and the 4K version didn't fix anything.
I find so many TVs now are too flat to the point you can barely see anything set at night or slight darkness. And I wonder if having that extra contrast actually evens out on modern hdr screens.
you cant do that by professionals either, ai is destructive, digital editing is destructive, al lyou're doing is further degrading the material, no matter how "well trained" your model is, no matter what QC is applied
LOL! Everything you said here is just wrong, wrong, and more wrong. I challenge you to A/B the Bluray vs the UHD DISC versions IN PERSON and then make claims. WB spent 2yrs with full teams redoing these with well seasoned Colorist that have remastered many UHD releases considered reference by the community. These remasters were all done from 4K OCN scans. You also have to consider that the show cameras/DP's evolved throughout and won't stay consistent. Also consider that the UHD will reveal all the flaws, the biggest being slightly missed focus.
I was tempted to buy my first 4K but think I’ll stick with the digital version on iTunes after watching this. It’s a shame because the sales on this could have justified the work being done well.
Dude the incessant music loop is incredibly annoying and took away from anything you said because i just had to turn it off after a while. Turn it down. The video would even survive without audio. Let your words do the talking for you
I dont know if its just me but the audio levels make things a bit difficult to hear. Like the background music and sound effects really drown out your voice.
Yes the SFX are louder than the voiceover. Either equalize the voiceover or lower the volume of the imported elements RUclipsrs should close their eyes and listen to the audio before uploading to avoid these easy avoidable mistakes
The reason the extras are on two Blu-ray discs and not 4K ones, is because most of those extras date back to the DVD era and are in SD, not in HD. And the 4K spec does not allow for SD content, only HD. Moreover, the 4K discs are already "too full" because they feature too many episodes per disc, which is hurting the picture quality. If they had to artificially upscale the SD content to HD and include that on the relevant 4K discs, they would have to either increase the number of discs (unlikely) or decrease the quality even more.
I didn't know 4K didn't support SD! That's wild information and a great shame. I suppose from a manufacturing perspective it makes things a lot simpler
WB is NOT going to spend any more money when they don’t have to. They know anything labeled Friends is going to sell. Why bother rebuilding the extended episodes from scratch? They apparently “lost” all of the information required to extended the episodes and won’t bother going through all of the footage again to find it.
There’s ANOTHER version. The Japanese issue box set . I bought the Japanese version because it has a sturdy box , has no off-gassing on the covers or finger marks on discs (which are on the US version ) and has no incorrectly labeled disc (the UK version ) . The Japanese set is region free , comes with lots of art cards and booklet plus has English covers . Japanese manufacture is high quality
Well i think the discs still might be made in Germany though., A lot of big Studios are pressing their worldwide releases in Germany, such as Paramount, Which adds insult to the fact that Warner and Paramount both often hold back certain releases for the german market. Such as the Theatrical Cuts for Superman and Supernanan II (we germans only got the Richard Donner cuts for the Blu-ray sets) or even TV shows like "Batman - the animated series" which never got a german release, even though it ran over here and has a complete german dub. Including the specials. And don't even get me started how badly they ripped off the german market with Blade Runner. And Paramount also kept the "Extended TV cut" version of "Star Trek - the motion picture" out of the german Special Collectors Edition Box set... even though the disc was manufactured in Germany and even came with freaking german subtitles (it even had a VHS Dub but Paramount claimed there was no dub for it).,... i swear, these corporations have absolutely NO CLUE about anything.
4K discs cannot store SD-quality video, but standard Blu-Rays can. Because Special Features were often made for DVDs and then carried over with each release, it's not uncommon for the old DVD special features to be plopped on a standard Blu-Ray for watching.
Loved the vid!! Your passion is amazing! Actually makes me want to rewatch Friends now that I'm older. Also God I hope buffy comes back with a positive relevance and better hd please 😢
I did the opposite of what you did for the Blu-Ray set. I'm from the USA, and I imported the UK version of the Blu-Ray set back in 2012 because I wanted it more standard, shelf-friendly packaging. Plus I really hate discs in cardboard sleeves like the way the initial USA release was set up. The fact that the UK version was cheaper didn't hurt, either. I don't see myself jumping on the 4K set, though, in any form. I enjoy the show a lot. I bought all of the individual seasons on DVD years ago, and then got the aforementioned Blu-Ray set. I do have many 4K movies in my collection, and I'm not opposed by any means to shows like this making it to 4K. But I can't see paying full price for this yet again, especially with some of the issues that are being reported with it (as mentioned in this video). Even if it was a completely stellar release, I would still wait for a major eventual price drop / sale.
Interesting we went opposite ways! I guess there is a market for all these releases after all 🙌 I think a price drop on the sets is inevitable. Probably the one I've pre-ordered too!
Seems to me that if you're going to rescan the 35mm prints, crop them to the original TV aspect ratio and keep the colors as close as possible to the original. There's nothing to be gained from AI upscalers, cropping that hurts the image or weird color grading.
"warner brothers has always been great with home video" I would disagree with that Statement, it was WB's lack of quality standard (cheap packaging, no disc art, the same stock menu for all of their shows and tvs that made them look like piracy, lack of bonus features, etc) followed by universal and then Sony (and finally Disney) it was them who started to cause the decrease in sales that resulted in the almost extinction of physical media and the rise of streaming
It's fair to critique their methods sure but I think their championing of home video goes way back and set precedents lots of other studios followed form on. Even now they seem to be pushing into the 4K space when most other studios don't seem to understand how to even get there. WB pulling back from their peak of loads of releases is an unfortunate but to be expected move given the lay of the land. But they still put out their major current hits like House of the Dragon and Last of Us, while this throwing of the nostalgia bone in the hopes someone bites on Friends is promising!
Do you know how/why? The way I see it the extended scenes are still on the film reel with the rest of the footage. They scanned the reels again to crate the remastered episodes. They probably backed up all the reels footage. So they do have it. They just don't have a financial incentive to reconstruct those versions when those "longer episodes" aren't the versions syndicated on tv.

Well yeah, it's a miracle the majority of the 35mm Filmnegative elements and Editors Decision Lists (EDLs) of the Show even survived all these years. Because usually TV shows were never meant to get a second mastering process once all the Dailies were transfered to videotape and then edited to the final episode Videomasters which was then used to source the broadcast tapes from. And that means the material could have ended in the trashcan. This is also why some TV shows have some scenes upscaled from the old SD video sources. Mostly when Special effects are used or Stock footage was used. But Stockfootage often simply gets replaces with different material. Shows like "M*A*S*H" don't even have their 35mm OCN anymore and to cut costs for the show they even edited it to 16mm prints. And those are the only film elements still existing that were also used for the DVD release.

He said that they want the new generation to know and watch Friends exactly the same way as those who watched the show in the 90s (which is just an excuse, because they edited it this way so the syndicated channels could update the master of the show, since many countries dubbed the show in the original cut). Anyway, no footage was lost, and the documentary showed very well that they kept all the original footage without editing... camera angles.
They're never going to spend the amount of money that is ACTUALLY needed to do a proper release in 4K UHD. This has just been upscaled and given a simple HDR upgrade. Probably some editor who has been prepping 2 to 4 episodes a day (most of the time is spend during the actual upscaling process). Compare this to what James Cameron had done for the recent Titanic remaster and you're mind will be blown.
I can only speak from my European (PAL region) experience, but the video footage on our Friends DVDs looks super smooth. It's 25 fps interlaced, but to the eye it looks like 50 fps progressive. I can't speak for Blu-ray releases since I don't own those, but on streaming services, while HD 1080p, we're stuck with just 25 fps and that's a shame.
Without all of the extra footage being added back in, i won't be buying. I have the dvd boxset where all the episodes are complete, and i can live with the 4:3 aspect ratio because the cut dialogue (and sometimes entire scenes!) Are worth it. I don't like 4k to be honest it makes alot of film look grainy. Those 4k Scenes look like wild unreal temperature change in the flim "warmth" doesn't look right at all. Funny thing is here in America friends is not as popular as it is with you guys across the pond. I think its the cheeky humor which I guess not everyone gets here. Even in its prime it wasn't everyone's cup of tea. I'm all for viewing them how they where intended to be viewed. I feel blu Ray is the best: no wild AI, captures enough of the flim details and the full frame which was hid in over scan on DVD.
Friends is one the worst sitcoms ever made. It's not funny. It's racist. And it's overrated. There are so many better sitcoms that have been made, that never gained the popularity of friends.
The internet idiots' dictionary: "I personally never liked it" = "overrated, the worst ever". Very interesting. Just kidding, this show is so offensive, and blah blah unfunny and blah blah who cares. Just kidding, it was great, and you care about it for some reason. Keep watching other sitcoms, everybody is happier this way.

"fix errors" is the biggest, most half witted thing you could say. you're fine with digitally medeling and altering the content? but ai is too far? they're if not comparable, but just as destructive as eachother, and you can't pick one over the other.
AI or algorithm?
I don't like 4k to be honest it makes alot of film look grainy. Those 4k Scenes look like wild unreal temperature change in the flim "warmth" doesn't look right at all. Funny thing is here in America friends is not as popular as it is with you guys across the pond. I think its the cheeky humor which I guess not everyone gets here. Even in its prime it wasn't everyone's cup of tea. I'm all for viewing them how they where intended to be viewed. I feel blu Ray is the best: no wild AI, captures enough of the flim details and the full frame which was hid in over scan on DVD.
If it’s AI then we going to be seeing some extra fingers.
🤣
The one with the dead bloke in it 😅
I hate this videos
Friends is one the worst sitcoms ever made. It's not funny. It's racist. And it's overrated. There are so many better sitcoms that have been made, that never gained the popularity of friends.
Not funny ya mostly not. Overrated yep. Racist?
The internet idiots' dictionary: "I personally never liked it" = "overrated, the worst ever". Very interesting. Just kidding, this show is so offensive, and blah blah unfunny and blah blah who cares. Just kidding, it was great, and you care about it for some reason. Keep watching other sitcoms, everybody is happier this way.
How is it racist?
@@BlackPuma124 even the creator apologized for the show being racist. It was 20 years later. But they still acknowledged it.
@@joeybaseball7352 I don't disagree, but it would be helpful for you to actually point out what you're referring to.
