  • The 2020 Conference Opening Plenary Address "How Social Media Is Changing Social Networks, Group Dynamics, Democracies, and Gen Z" - Jonathan David Haidt, PhD at AGPA Connect 2020 in NYC.
    Social media has changed many parameters of social life, in ways that are damaging teen
    mental health. Heavy users of social media have twice the rate of depression and anxiety, and five published experiments indicate that the effect is at least partly causal: people who
    stop or reduce social media experience gains in mental health. Dr. Haidt addressed what social media has done to Gen Z, the generation born beginning in 1996. Because social media changes networks, it has effects on most groups and organizations. The big challenge is to find ways to help groups and communities use social media in more healthy ways.

    I went a few months without social media and it felt like giving my brain a clean bath. Felt great afterwards, and disgusted that we are letting our children glue their eyes and ears to their phones, where random people are fighting for their attention. The mindfulness workbook called 30 Days Without Social Media by Harper Daniels gores great with Jonatha's book.

    Someday people will view social media like cocaine--initially thought to be a wonder drug, universally abused, and too late regulated as a massive social ill. And this man will get a great deal of the credit. Not only is he brilliant; like John McWhorter, he has the assertive but non-confrontational personality that makes his message easier for the reluctant to accept. Thank you!

    17:41 take note of the Y Axis, it is only from 50 to 90, which exaggerates the effect. Point still taken.

    • @hottuna2006

      The point is not about percentages but the trend

    • @BloominOnion1
      @BloominOnion1 4 года назад +3

      @@hottuna2006 Yes, I got "the point". I merely call attention to the partial axis to ensure that people see a more accurate depiction of the data. Trends don't paint the full picture. You can zoom in or out of any chart to create trend effects. The Stock Market does it every day. In this instance, if the Y axis started at "0", which would be expected, the visual effect would be halved. You would see that a majority of Gen Z'ers still date, for instance.

    • @hamishfernando7570
      @hamishfernando7570 3 года назад +2

      There's a drop in most of those factors from around 85% to 55%. I would call that quite notable even if the trend is exaggerated by zooming in to the y axis

    My wife and I had peanut butter all the time and our son developed an allergy to it. Neither my wife, nor myself, nor our parents or siblings have a peanut allergy. The uptick in peanut allergy is a bizarre mystery, and I don't think that peanut aversion during pregnancy explains it, quite honesty.

      Textbook example of anecdotal fallacy

    • @BloominOnion1
      @BloominOnion1 4 года назад +3

      @@hottuna2006 It's easy to dismiss other people's life experiences as "anecdotes". If it was just me speaking in isolation, you could make that argument. But the peanut allergy phenomenon has been skyrocketing, and aversion to peanuts is not a widely practiced among pregnant women, despite what he says. It doesn't add up. The speaker's theory is an interesting one but it cannot be stated as fact.

      Allergies are related to the microbiome and the change in what bacteria the infant absorbs when born and from the environment around them. People with more sanitized environments and western diets have less diverse microbiomes and more allergy issues.

    • @triggernm
      @triggernm 3 года назад +6

      I think you're missing the point. He isn't trying to convince you that the reason there is an uptick in peanut allergies is because of standard advice to avoid it. He's showing an example of anti-fragility by referencing a study that showed exposure to peanuts can help reduce susceptibility to peanut allergy by having early exposure. Even that study itself isn't trying to convince people that the standard advice is the cause of, or explains the, rising rate of peanut allergy. Rather its simply demonstrating that early exposure can help reduce it.

    My sister recently took away her, young teenage, sons phones as a punishment for some misbehaviour. When she offered them back a few weeks later, they refused. They said they were now enjoying playing with their friends, in person, much more that they didn’t have their phones. She proposed deleting all their social media apps and giving them back; they agreed. She tells me that most of their friends have now done the same. She also told me they appear much more gregarious, happier and engaging, not just with their friends, but also their parents and other family members. This example is very anecdotal, however I think Professor Haidt is on the money here.
