Kingpins do seems pretty strong when neither side has many works. As i assume the kingpin is what lets then push works a bit later to get the slight worker lead while also being overbuilt most waves.
Without champion people usually stays 5 workers wave 3 and hold every time, so you could bait Inc send 3 while being 6 workies. In simple words you keep champ just to give less information about your mastermind and worker state. And you never really leak 1-2 with gun (only to brute on 2 maybe) so there no real reason to put champ wave 1 unless you lazy ass

You made a comment that it wasn't worth putting champion on the gun until wave 3 or 4. Why? Why wait when you could put it on round 1?

It doesn't have the passive anymore
no passive where if stuff is closer it does more damage. so you dont need creeps as close to gun as possible anymore
