My tip for future Holiday meals for those who are cooking for a large gathering,...buy 2 smaller turkeys (12-14 lbs) instead of one 22-24 pounder. They cook in half the time and you end up with 4 wings and 4 drumsticks! (Yes I know they wanted to cook a small turkey, LOL). Happy TG all! :D

Tip for oven space: I cook our turkey in an electric roaster in a separate room so it’s out of the oven and out of the way! Then my oven is freed up to make stuffing and sweet potato casserole!! The turkey is always delicious, I’ve done as big as 22lbs, and yes, the skin does still brown!

  • @ALiz86
    @ALiz86 4 года назад +8

It's funny to me to hear you say that a turkey bigger than 20 pounds is too big! You've got a big family!
My Dad had my Mom make 25-28+ pound turkeys every year and there were only 7 people eating it.
It makes great sandwiches. We freeze any left overs and make turkey pot pie, turkey casserole, soup, add it over salad, etc. It is a great staple to have in your freezer when you need it!
    Happy Thanksgiving!

we eat Turkey in New Zealand for Christmas amount other delishness - my family cook the turkey in a oven bag to keep it juice - we also "stuff" the turkey which I think you Americans call dressing - we put ours inside the bird - sage in the bottom and cranberry stuffing in the neck - takes longer to cook but with the oven bag so moist and delish - all the juices stay inside the bag and you release them at the end to make the gravy but the biggest BUT for you all is if you oven decides to run hot for the Thanksgiving cooking of the Turkey the oven bag will protect it and keep it moist

Polishing silver and getting out the crystal bowls and glasses and all the fancy things she has hidden away all year long. It’s not for showing off. It’s for her and the memories she’s making for the family. especially the kids. It’s a special day no matter who sees it or doesn’t.

We keep most of our dairy in ours... butter, cheeses, sour cream, eggs etc. This way it eliminates a lot of clutter in the main frig. Much easier to find things.

I'm with Megan.... with all that is going on in the world, this Thanksgiving needs to be special. I brought out all my matching serving bowls and platters, the serving utensils, silverware, stemware and fine China. It's Wednesday evening and the table is already set for tomorrow with flowers too.
For the first time in 26 years there will be no extended family over for dinner. Everyone bringing one or two dishes, and ending up with a ton of leftovers!
Just Dad, Mom, my hubby, daughter and myself.
So grateful that we can get together and enjoy each other's company. Feeling super blessed!

My mom's friend put her Turkey in her garage 3-4 days before Thanksgiving every year. She lived until age 82 and never got sick I have put mine in the kitchen sink, no water 1 day before when it was still not thawed. We survived. If it's at all frozen the best way is to make it in the plastic bags, better chance of it turning out. Make sure you have a meat thermometer. We couldn't afford one this year. So no worriies here. Happy Thanksgiving to your family. Hugs..

I dont remember how much our turkey weighed, it was a 9 dollar one, but tip for next year: you can defrost it overnight in the sink in the kitchen and the warmth from the house and it just sitting there all night will help it thaw faster and if you dont trust it out till you are ready to brine it then the moment you notice it thawed just pop it in the fridge. Its faster than ice water. I noticed ours was thawed before the morning somewhat and then in the morning it was done and it sitting at room temp a few hours isn't bad.

I kind of chuckled to myself as I watched this yesterday. While you were discussing which foods would go in which fancy bowls and platters my husband was picking up my Walmart order with about a dozen foil pans 🤷🏻‍♀️ I remember all too well the days when I used to bring out the fancy stuff for our Thanksgiving meal. But over the years my youngest sister started hosting Thanksgiving dinner and I had got used to not needing to do all that. This year we cannot attend the family Thanksgiving dinner at my sister's house because of covid 😥 besides the governor's mandates on gatherings, I became ill last week with covid. So, besides trying to keep things kind of normal for our family, just my husband, one son and four granddaughters we're raising, I'm trying to keep this meal memorable, yet as simple as possible. So, it was refreshing to me to see that you and your family are not letting go of the holiday traditions as far as breaking out the "good" stuff ❤️

I keep my Turkey baster, meat thermometer and meat grabber handle thingys inside the roaster when I put it away each year so I know where it is and it will be ready for the next year. By using it only once a year this could last at least 30+ years. My dad has been doing this my whole life and at 74 is still using his second roaster oven he bought in the late 80’s.

That cookbook looks great. My bible for learning to cook was The Joy of Cooking..... in the 70's. I still make the twice stuffed sweet potatoes from there, they are incredible if you don't like all the sweetness and marshmallows of a casserole. The recipe you mentioned in the last video for the cranberry curd tart seemed really delicious. You should try it sometime and if you like it let us know and put the recipe in your web site. I looked for it on the internet and there are some, but I don't think they were the same. For future reference the turkey breasts defrost much faster than a big turkey. Also I didn't know you had to put ice in the water to defrost anything, cold water yes and if you left it in the cooler with just a bit of ice it would have been good. We had a restaurant a long time ago and I had to take the Dept. of Health classes and get a certificate before opening.

I can not reccomend oven bags enough for this type of thing. It cuts the cooking time in half. We normally stuff the Turkey with cut lemons and oranges then use a poultry herb and butter mix that we rub between the skin and the Turkey. It's always moist and full of flavor. Yummy!! We pre bake all the other dishes before the turkey that way all we have to do is warm them up afterwards.

I rarely cook. Also I'm in Israel and not all the Americans celebrate Thanksgiving.
I have joined w others to celebrate Thanksgiving. Turkey necks cooked in a barley soup....one year I joined w a friend and I bought turkey deli meat, pitas and she made a salad.
It's the being together that's the most important IMO.
Of course it is fun and memorable the tradition of certain foods.
Blessings, love and prayers to all, from Israel 🇮🇱

We have an extremely small oven and just start the Turkey early, then do the other things that need to be baked. This year we had a 22lb Turkey gifted to us and also made mashed potatoes, gravy, dressing, roasted Brussel sprouts, dinner rolls, Watergate salad, chocolate cream pie & key lime pie! Hope you all had a great meal!

Hi Knorpps, I just saw a video on a fast way to polish silver! You need a leg trash can or storage bin, line it with tin foil walls and bottom then fill with water. Put silver in and put lots of backing soda and let set for 20 mins....whalla beautiful shinny silver.

Tip for next year is to buy the breast if you like that then buy some turkey wings/legs to roast a day or two before for drippings to make gravy. Happy Thanksgiving!

A friend of mine grills their turkey in a beer bath all day. Its super tender and falls off the bone . He sits it in the pan with it seasoned and starts about 7 am and just pours a can of beer or two over it every hr until about 3-4 in the afternoon its the best we ever had. Have not tried it myself yet since its only 4 of us and our kids are still not really meat eaters.

A little tip to keep your turkey hot for at least an hour or, so you can still use your oven...take it out of the roaster and place on your cutting board and wrap it with tin foil and then cover it with a heavy bath towel....I do this every time I cook a turkey and still need my oven for my sweet potatoes. Try it works.

Hi Ryan's mom Sam here.... in the UK we don't celebrate *Thanksgivings * for us its all about Christmas Day and Boxing Day ( which is the day after Christmas day they is a reason it called this) and we aren't having Turkey as I find they is so much waste so we will get a Stuffed Turkey Breast 😁 but can I say you have a Miss Mash of food that really shouldn't go together 😂 but enjoy hope it's a good day xx

We always get a whole Turkey! And I always put it in a Reynolds Turkey bag! It always turns out great! Never had a bad one, and the bag makes it super easy! Only 3 of us, and iits a 20 lb Turkey! We love all the leftovers, freeze, all but maybe 1 dinners worth, and cut up some for Turkey sandwiches, and i use the carcass for my Turkey corn noodle soup! We get lots of different meals out of 1 bird!

Happy Thanksgiving, we are in total lockdown here in Manitoba Canada. Our Costco and every other store can only sell essential food . Nothing else no toys , craft supply’s clothes other than outerwear for winter. Liquor stores and weed stores can stay open . Something wrong with this I think . Stay safe .

.. We're in BC, watching the news about you. Such a horrible time we are in eh? We saw the plastic wrap and tarps around the non essential items in your Costco and WalMart. We are under stricter restrictions now too. Sadly our little g'daughter doesn't get her birthday party this weekend... but we just need to stay focused, be proactive, stay safe and stay healthy. Wishing you all the best. 💕

In Australia those sandwich makers are called jaffle irons and the toasted sandwich that comes out of it is called...you guessed it...a jaffle. I use mine on the burner on my stove. Works just fine. Enjoy!

We call they them Mountain Pies or Hobo Pies. Get your fire hot, and once the coals are nice and red, stick the pie maker in with whatever you want to make, fruit pies, pizza pies, so many options. They cook up fast and if you have several irons, you can feed your crowd in no time. We like to sprinkle powder sugar on the fruit pies.
