Stumbled upon this as I was searching for more content of Innuit life. Read about Franklin, Amundsen, Hudson and other great explorers but to see you and your group interact with the locals and continue on after being denied your initial goal was fantastic. I was intrigued how different the dog teams were tied versus more western ones. (Alaska and Canada's arctic coastline) Thank you for sharing your trip and have already checked out your other vids like comparing weather gear. Cheers from the Northeast of America with Canadian, German and Welsh heritage. We are just one family trying to live our lives in peace no matter what country we hail from. If only we could xxx the politicians.
Thanks for the amazing perspective on a world rarely shown as the reality that it is by conventional media. It's a stark reminder to the comfortable lives we are able to live. Keep up the great work and I look forward to all the experiences , both small and large, that you are able to share with us.
Really glad I spent an hour viewing this video. Well done! It is quite interesting to see the contrasts of northern life by region, culture, and geography. As they say their is more than one way to skin a cat! Beautiful presentation. Thank you for sharing via this medium, thoroughly enjoyed!!!
I didn't know what this was of how long it was going to be, I just clicked it and watched. What a pleasant surprise this film was, such an interesting expedition giving us a look into the lives of people up in the North of Scotland! I was especially amazed to see so much love from the dogs! I still wouldn't call them pets, but team members they were for certain! Thank you very much for taking the time to film and edit this.
Good strong dogs! Dave - what a character. God... I don't think I could go there because the dogs are so cute I wouldn't be able to leave. I bred blue and red Australian Cattle Dogs for 23 years and working dogs, after you've been around them, do something to you I reckon. Fight, bite, growl, snarl, bad tempered but would willing and happily die to save your life if the need arises. The moments of affection with such utilitarian breeds make your heart melt don't they? Somehow makes it all even more special.
Bravo!! A beautiful struggle between between men, beasts and the elements. Humanity needs struggle, …typed from the comfort of a couch. Also enjoyed the sarcasm and humor!
This video deserves so much more exposure than it has gotten! I love the Arctic always have and always will. Truly nothing like it. I have a strong pull toward cold climates when it comes to surfing, ice caving, skiing, etc. I hope to one day experience what it is like to live in the far north, the way the locals do. Truly inspiring enjoyed every minute of this video. Congrats.
Thanks so much for taking us on your journey. I was really surprised that the dogs were more like pets than working dogs, you guys formed such beautiful relationships with your dogs.
Much appreciated. Yes the dogs are on the whole very friendly and they appreciated attention. Although, some can initially be shy, and they lack the normal obedience training you'd expect from a pet. It's also important to throw food and not hand it out, as they haven't learned not to take your fingers off with it.
Ended up being just as good as I had hoped! Headphones solved the problem of my pup getting rattled by the constant ruckus of the sled dogs. Thank you for posting, it was endlessly entertaining and excellent to see what your expeditions look like!
@@AlexHibbertOriginals Just so you know it was a very good film. I am sure the time spent there was a life time of memories. I am glad you could share it.

I'm not sure why you went on that excursion.? Other than just for the experience of living that lifestyle. But it did look like an amazing experience.! Excellent video.!!👍
It is called adventure. Adventure = interesting stuff + Adrenalin + other cultures (not of the bacterial/fungal kind) + comradeship + testing yourself under difficult circumstances etc. now compare that with a stroll to the park in the morning, lunch at a cosy cafe and an arvo of computer games… seriously though, none of the world would have been discovered if not for our innate need to have adventure going back from the dawn of human kind. For some of us it is hard wired and we cannot choose any other path. As an Aussie I spent about 20 nights each winter sleeping in tents in the snow or digging snow caves while exploring the roof of Australia by map and compass at the grand altitude of 2,200m and I have the fondest memories of my life about those expeditions.
They were Savage .300 WIn Mags. Just a quick sandpaper on the barrel and then Hammerite. It was for safety in the dark - so we could see the direction of the weapon.
@@AlexHibbertOriginals I had never heard of Hammerite being used as a gun finish, but it makes sense in the conditions. but certainly a great choice for bears!
What an amazing experience, and great video. Does it get depressing with all the darkness? It's like Dances With Wolves with a lot of male bonding. Lol.
That is an amazing journey we can only envy. Remarkable storytelling. Did you get meat delivered for the dogs, or did you also learn how to hunt them? Say, are James living in a van?
Only locals have legal permission to hunt, with the exception of seals that we could have harvested. We saw how the latter was done in winter, but didn't do so ourselves. And James. #vanlife. It's a climber thing.

Just wondering if any of your books will ever have an audiobook version. I’m Super dyslexic so I find it hard to read entire books so I pretty much exclusively enjoy books through audio form, so an audiobook would enable me to actually read some of them. Also I’m sure tons of people who are able to read full books just enjoy audiobooks more.
Yes a lot of people are requesting this. It's a significant financial investment to audiobook an already published book, as you've lost the initial surge of sales.
Yes, the campsite near the LYR airport frequently has bears pass by. Condolences if you knew Johan. The dogs in Greenland are a very different character and type though, and the bears are very wary of them because of continued bear hunting in the region. Bears are totally protected in Svalbard and so are less likely to associate dogs with danger.
I have spent quite a bit of time studying Greenland and and greenlandic archaeology and ethnology and I gotta say: That's an awfully wide dog sled! Did the locals make any remarks that you know of? A traditional thule district sled is rather light normally
Hi. No, the sled was a normal heavy-weight sea ice design. The width was a local's decision, not ours. These 5m long sleds would be to carry large hunting loads.
Hi mate, great mini-doc! A question, what was the, “Arctic grade working dog dry food”, you spoke of? If you remember the brand name that is. We have our own team of Inuit/Eskimo Dogs here, also Alaskan Huskies and a Malamute, living in Northern Canada. My wife and I are just curious as to what the dry food you fed the dogs was.
Thanks for that. The stuff in Greenland was Royal Canin's working dog line. The dogs loved it. I've also used much denser Inukshuk food, but dogs don't seem to be so keen. It's useful for long trips where weight is an issue though and you need calorie density.
I just started to watch you videos, are you still having the rolling problem? I think you can mount two swim platforms on each side of your boat the kind I have on my searay boat, not much weight, but will limit the rolling problem, a few boat fenders on the bottom side of each swim platform, , maybe I am too late,
@@AlexHibbertOriginals I lose the will to live just thinking about wasting away trying to edit. I started it, but will have to finish when I get off work. Already a big #davethedog fan though! Awesome stuff

Just a long accumulation of fuel drums from years and years. They are delivered by ship, but it's not economically viable to collect the empties.

Some sections of sea ice flood before breaking up for the summer.
how does one afford the time/money to be able to do this?
Self employment, and I actually took the financial risk myself - hoping to be paid back in years to come.
What kind of gun we're you using
