  • You could view them as the trash collectors of the Passaic River. But George Krusznis and Bob O'Neill see themselves more as caretakers, helping to heal a sick waterway. The two are part of an 11 member crew of the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission’s skimmer vessel Newark Bay. They collect trash floating near the surface of one of the most polluted rivers in the United States. (Video by Andre Malok | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com)

I'm cleaning up in my forest almost every day, it's sad how people treat this beautiful planet that gives us so much.
    Thank you for doing this!

Thank you. I love the Passaic River. I hope one day it will be all cleaned up.

As a young(8yrs old) boy, until I was 24, I spent almost every late spring to mid fall week end , with my wonderful Polish grand father and his life long friends in Mountain View, on the Passaic Rive across from Singac. I learned how to swim in that river(thank God, never caught Polio). Started motorboating there in the late 50s. Early 60s, I started to water ski there. Yes, you red that correctly! My grand father and his friends had a summer bungalow on Riverlawn Dr. from the early 1900s. They all are gone now, as is their treasured bungalow. As an old man myself now, I think back to how nice it was to spend so much time on the Passaic River. Thank you gentlemen for working to clean up the lower part of the river.

Wow, you waterskied in the Passaic. It had to have been very polluted, 60 years ago.
My mother's family was from New Jersey, the greater NYC-Newark area. I remember the jokes about this river.

North of the river is much cleaner but is still really dirty. As a fisher I do manage to land fish often so that’s a good sign. The Northern Pike in the Passaic are huge!!

Haven't seen these skimmers on the river in over 2 years especially around the newark ironbound area where the garbage is insane

Why is there no mention of who is polluting the river?

It is sad I grew up near the Okonite Cable plant at the end of Washington Pl and Hope Ave. I never went into that river because it was so disgusting. I used to see tires, shopping carts, you name it. Passaic really hasn't changed.

Got to stop it at the source where is the trash coming in from and collect it from the source.

The trash is coming from the sewers drain systems and gets flushed into the river

Swim?! I wouldn't put my boat in that river. From Newark to Passaic its a tidal trash can.
