They don't have bathroom is this game so my mind gave me a logical reason. When they swim to see, they also do the things they should do in a bathroom. And maybe, that is also why the shark is so angry every time and wants to bite them.

I think it has to do with the amount of wood they need for the engine. They can't reach the next story island without using the engine because they have to go against the current.
