It took me a long time to realize this but the show started here because of her, not because of Lucky Strike or anything else. She's the one that made ripples in the otherwise calm waters and set in motion the unraveling of Don's facade of a life. Ultimately him going back for her, finding out she's passed away was a piece of the puzzle which tied the shredding of both the Don and Dick personalities, allowing for a new person who could actually feel loved, understand what it means and creating that Coke commercial.

@@christinamasberg how do you know men of that era were afraid to feel?who gives you the right to say? they just did not go on about feelings the whole time or bully people into talking about their feelings in a sefish way..and love is often a construction and a fantasy. as Don says there are rules and its folly to pretend there are not. There are rules still,,,buy a house, dog, baby, rinse and repeat.Real love is different and love was really not the motivation in hunter gatherer societies or feudal ones. read some history ..actually maybe not, you might not like it....people were not living their best lives

@@cattyelse2372 I studied sociology, history and film, and the emotional and psychological effect of war times and serving are so well researched. Don Draper is an excellently written and excellently played example of a broken man. We might mean the same thing. Every era of humanity, every culture, every society had a different way and different coping mechanism to deal with emotions. Don trying to find safety and peace while being wired to live in danger and to run is what the dynamic of the 50s was about: Trying to suppress and forget the terror and play family and harmony instead of dealing with the trauma. Humanity just didn't know how to help the veterans. Or anyone to find real mental health in that time.

When I first saw this episode, I cringed. If you were to say this to a woman today. You'd get told to MYOB and the drink thrown at you. To me, it shows Don is still living in the dark ages. And Rachel is being her own person. Not a Feminist. A person choosing her destiny....

Don's ego is something else. He declares he invented love lol. Even though love is stupid and all, it is part of human existence. he may have commercialize it, package and shine it, it was always there. Why do we have fucking poetry, songs, novels...etc?
When I was younger, I used to watch Don's rumblings like the smartest things in the world. But they are just self serving effigy he is presenting to the world. He lives like there is no tomorrow? Please. Don is the most calculating sob in the world. He complains about rules then he works like a slave. But he is smart. He knows the image he is presenting gets results. That's all that matters. He gets to get in the pants of the women he lays his eyes on. That's much more than most men can succeed in doing.

  • @austingil7

The commentary on this is some really bad analysis. Clearly, Don is taken aback by the fact that she knows the real man. The disconnected man who sees the whole world the way other people live it, because he has always had to live this fake double life. It is why she is the first to learn about his real parents later on in the season. It is her that he runs to when his two worlds collide together. This commentary was some real BS though.
