I still don’t get understand when Annie said she only likes the idea of being loved... does that means she doesn’t actually love Jeff in the virtual system analysis episode of season 3
Idk they went back and forth a few times on this. In earlier seasons she also mentions a few times that she thinks Jeff is gross. It’s probably just due to the fact that the writers weren’t really sure about how to handle the endgame of this relationship. The show never handles this relationship consistently. See, in one episode they get a great and very genuine moment together, like in season 4s convention episode or in the United Nations episode where Jeff basically admits to at least crush on her but masking it with the whole “kiddo” shtick. And in other episodes the writers play on how weird their age gap is. If I had to contribute it to real life occasions, sometimes when you like/ love someone you try to convince yourself otherwise to prevent being hurt.
She said that because she started to think that Jeff never going to love her so she was convincing herself not to think about love and Jeff.. and writer always left audience in confusion. And that's why ending was confusing but if you see the airport scene carefully,Jeff kissed Annie and they were happy. It means they got together. But Dan Harmon didn't showed it clearly because of critics judgements and remarks aginst this ship..
We always save the best lies for ourselves. I remember laughing my ass off at some guy saying that Annie never really loved Jeff, solely based on that one comment. But no, Annie was definitely always infatuated with Jeff and he always loved her. As Sarina said, a lot of it had to do with when Annie would get frustrated and feel it was never going to happen, that she'd try to convince herself she didn't REALLY love him.

Well it wasn’t supposed to end with 6 seasons. There was supposed to be a season 7 but it never happened that’s why the ending is not the best.
