Mulch those blueberries with arborists wood chips (usually free) to prevent those weeds from coming back. For any area of your yard that you want to reclaim from weeds for a flower or veggie garden, mow first then put a 4-5” layer of wood chips. By the next year, the soil will be moist and friable. Add new chips every year. Follow the Garden Professors on Facebook for science based gardening info.
@@ThriftDiving If you put a layer of cardboard down (make sure you overlap it so there are NO holes to allow the weeds to come up through it) then put your mulch on top of the cardboard. Lay the cardboard (I use broken down cardboard boxes) in between your blueberry plants, then add about 2 to 4 inches of whatever kind of mulch you prefer on top... it doesn't matter if you use pine needles or shredded wood for mulch either will keep the blueberry plants from drying out so you won't need to water as often. The best part is that it makes the area look fantastic and keeps it weed-free all summer long! This is such a wonderful project for you and the hubs... love, love, love it!

Blueberries love acidic soil. I have clay soil and so I transplant my struggling plant into a new bed wit 50% premium topsoil mix and 50% peat moss. I also put cardboard underneath the soil and peat to cut down on weeds. The plants are thriving. We also add aluminum sulfate to keep the soil acidic over the long run. I need to find some wood chips to mulch. Good luck.

I started using power tools around 2013 or 2014. I started doing more home improvement and repairs stuff like in my basement after enrolling in a carpentry program at my community college (I'm going for my 2 year degree in carpentry). I like painting furniture and doing crafts, but I like to push my skills to the limit and try tougher projects the deeper I get into the trades! You should defintely start small with painting projects, and learn to use a jigsaw first to get comfy with tools. Just check my channel for "how to use a jigsaw" and you'll feel more comfortable to start some projects!
Such an improvement but the soil really needs cover to stop erosion, stop weeds and keep moisture in. Plants beat mulch any day for that and maybe you could squeeze in some more ornamental edible plants or flowers for fragrance/bees.
Awesome! 2 questions ... will the squirrels 🐿 get the birdseed? And how big will the blueberries get? Will they fill the fenced in area? Will the birds get them still?
do we have a update for 2022, might want to check ph of you soil try and get down to 4.5 blue berries love acidic soils, a lot of manure is alkaline. so adding elemental sulfur works great and pine bark mulch helps aswell
Wouldn't it be enough to mulch it. I mean pine mulch or spruce mulch. In Germany it is often spruce or some random cornifer. And they tend to make the soil acidic. In general mixing in some of that corse mulch is good to ventilate the soil and bring in some organic fibre that doesn't get broken down so quickly. A sack like youhad for soil I guess it is 20 gallons volume? Is about 3 euros. I don't know if it is more expensive in the us
You can cut pressure treated wood with a saw. How do you think they build wooden Decks? I live near a a train track, and I watch the crews cut these railroad sleepers with chainsaws all the time in order to replace them. If it's this rotted out you can usually take it to the town's yard waste collection site. That will save you on the junk collector pick up fee.
Great video. Your yard looks great! I noticed that the grape vine was planted very close to your gas meter. Please be careful and remember to call before you dig for safety and to ensure that you are less likely to hit any underground utilities while working.
Yep, I am 100% positive that it was ok to plant there because I did call 811 before digging! I just forgot to mention it in the video. I will go back and add a note about calling before you dig!
Wow! It looks fabulous, you'll have to keep us updated on the blueberries :) would be cool if you made a pie :) The garden looks amazing, I love watching your videos!
Great project. I like the ideas you did in this video. Keep in mind that periodic updated video or picture is a nice thing to do. How is this area doing now and perhaps in the spring as well.
In my experience with troybuilt tillers, there always is a slow setting. You really want to till slowly and really turn the garden...be sure to watch some videos on it or consult manual.
Use your local extension office for helpful info on growing blueberries in your area. But yes to mulch, pine bark or pine needles, coffee grounds too. Water at the base. when did you start doing more extreme diys like your basement? or even when did you start buying power tools? i love the idea of diying my home but am wondering when i should really dive into it? i’m not even out of college yet but i’m just itching to build/ repair something!
Put about 8-10 layers of newspaper down then mulch to keep the weeds out! Good luck.
Lovely!!
do we have a update for 2022, might want to check ph of you soil try and get down to 4.5 blue berries love acidic soils, a lot of manure is alkaline. so adding elemental sulfur works great and pine bark mulch helps aswell
It does look gooood....very pretty yard....
Thanks, Diane!!
I don't know if it is more expensive in the us
I really liked their rear tine tillers myself.
Beautiful! Giii! Your going to have blueberries!
Please more outdoor projects!! I love them!!
Wow! It looks fabulous, you'll have to keep us updated on the blueberries :) would be cool if you made a pie :)
The garden looks amazing, I love watching your videos!
Great project. I like the ideas you did in this video. Keep in mind that periodic updated video or picture is a nice thing to do. How is this area doing now and perhaps in the spring as well.
Love your videos, they make me happy when I watch them
The roto tiller works better if when the throttle is pulled pull the tille backwards
AWEE SO CUTE Hubby helping!
In my experience with troybuilt tillers, there always is a slow setting. You really want to till slowly and really turn the garden...be sure to watch some videos on it or consult manual.
Laughing at how your typo makes you sound unintentionally racist.
ohaitherehello1 oh no! I really didn’t mean it! I fixed my typo
Use your local extension office for helpful info on growing blueberries in your area. But yes to mulch, pine bark or pine needles, coffee grounds too. Water at the base. The first year dont let them produce fruit, let them root well the first year. Good luck, this is my first year growing blueberries too but i learned alot at a u-pick farm from the farmer there.
Great tips! There is already unripe fruit on the bushes. What do you recommend?
@@ThriftDiving as hard as it was, i picked all of them off my bushes . This puts more of the focus on root growth and new leaf growth. It should pay off in the long run though since blueberry bushes can live more than 70yrs
What a beautiful work! Keep those up. Nice to see!
Good job!! If your soil is clay, etc. check out the use of Gypsum to fix that problem. Good luck
Will do! Thanks for the tip!!
Simple and inspirational
You're just the cutest thing! That tiller was almost too big for you...but you managed to make it look lovely❤
Lol, thanks, Deborah! That bad boy will escape you if you let go! lol
How do you check the soil to see if its good for growing bluberries.
There are soil tester kits for like $5 where you take a small sample and test the acidity or alkaline of your soil!
Such a pretty transformation. I love it, and will be a great visual from street. Maybe putting a garden statue or big potted plant on the big stump.
Did you test the soil for lead? Also some of those old beams might be treated with nasty stuff which sometimes contain arsenic. My local university has a soil testing department which will test for lead and other contaminants.Check what is available in your area. I had some bad crap in my soil so I ended up doing straw bale gardening for edibles. Keep up the good work and have fun!
Pine needles lose their acidity when they break down The Espoma soil acidifier is so good- get it at Lowe’s or Amazon
Nice. Me personally I would've went a little bit deeper so it would be easier for the roots to expand. But you did a good job.
