Though its a STRUGGLE for me to get up early, when I do it makes a HUGE difference to get up an hr to 2hrs before the kids to pray, study the bible, and journal. Then make breakfast and start the day. I NEED alone time and many days I do not get enough of it and I suffer which translates into the environment of our home and homeschool. I have to remind myself to love the "mud" instead of getting angry and frustrated over little things, I should measure how big of a deal it really is and be calm and happy to spend time with the kids, I. need to let go and let God.

I homeschooled for nine years and now have the beautiful privilege of raising (adopting) and homeschooling my grandson. You are so right. My nine years each looked different and it was great. Learning to breathe and find the educational value in games and other activities really helped. Education does not just come from books.

I record keep after they do the task and I write all that is done and accomplished! Even if it’s my two year old counted and then played legos. It’s been lovely to see what we accomplish and not just (what we DIDN’T do)

Accepting that some days, no matter how much I planned, just wont go the way I hoped.
I woke up today and knew the moment I poured my coffee...today was just not going to happen the way I wanted. All of the lessons I had planned out just didnt happen today!
After having multiple of these types of days, I have learned I am not the planning homeschool mom I thought I would be. I CANNOT plan ahead. Our most successful and happy days are the days I did not make tons of plans.
So I am working on embracing the way WE do homeschool. Working on just slowing down on certain topics instead of sticking to a schedule.

I am a homeschool aunt. I never liked my nieces and nephew learning experience in public school and when the pandemic hit their mom finally agreed to let me homeschool them. It was hard in the beginning but ever since I learned to not compare or go with the local schools timing of what needs to be learned at what time of the year and tried reversed record keeping I have found so much peace and happiness in our homeschool. My nieces and nephew are thriving surpassing all my expectations. We piece together a lot of different things for our curriculum but most of all we love learning from nature and cultures around us and reading. Life is so much more full when I let go of all the pressure.

#1 I will not teach them everything! That's hard to hear, even harder to swallow. It's my job to teach them!!
I'm a former teacher with a graduate degree and I still can't teach my children EVERYTHING!
By stressing myself out and trying to teach them everything, I'm unintentionally teaching them that they must be perfect. That's not what I want either!

I literally binged watched all your videos last year in preparation for homeschooling. I sorted them from oldest to newest and just went down the line. Your whole energy and perspective when it comes to homeschooling is so relaxing and inspiring. It really helped calm my nerves and give me confidence that I could do it. To go with the flow of life and find flexibility. Homeschool is not public school AND THATS OKAY. (I mean I know that’s the whole point of homeschool 😂 but I mean the schedule of homeschool is not like public school). Think outside the box! Your videos have helped me so much. Thank you!! 🧡🧡🧡

I love reverse record keeping. Today we woke up to sunshine after rain the last 4 out of 5 days with more rain in our next few days so I took the opportunity to get some grocery shopping done. And didn't have to stress about getting home to check off the boxes of school lessons

A few of ours: 1)I don’t have to be like other mamas and let their child go during math..it’s hard...I will sit right there, and learn right along. 2) we don’t have to do 5 day school weeks..4 is fine, and as they get older they need that time to tune in on interest...we don’t have to “keep up” with coops and tutorials and be honors, or do the same curriculum...we can do what fits us and that is ok.

We slowed down a lot this year. We threw out grade levels and just said we are going to do us and not worry about staying on grade levels. We are basically redoing 5th grade but it has been so beneficial for my youngest and has given him so much confidence. It’s ok to slow down and not follow the “norm”! You are so encouraging! I’ve watched all of your videos. I jumped into this with the intention of possibly putting my son back in public school next year. I wanted to keep our homeschool similar to public school so it was an easy transition for him. We quickly realized we will continue on this journey, so I took inventory in December. Anything that didn’t bring joy to our homeschool was dumped. It was hard because part of what we dumped was Abeka LA and it was a nice chunk of $. Peace and joy in our homeschool is so much more important to me than the money. Honestly, we haven’t looked back. A huge part of that is because of your encouragement and wisdom. Thank you!

I love this video so much!! I am a first year homeschooling mom and I needed to hear all of this. I came out of the gates, guns blazing and tried to recreate school the first month. It was great the first week and then everything crumbled because I pushed. I finally took a step back and re-evaluated. Now we are a go with the flow homeschool family and my girls have done amazing! This video 🙌 i felt like you were talking directly to me! I came to the realization the other day that I needed to get out of this "public school" mindset. We chose homeschooling for a reason, so why am I letting these "standards" and opinions of others dictate how I homeschool. Its definitely been a struggle but I'm so happy to find videos like yours because it makes me feel less alone in the way I feel about motherhood, being a wife and homeschooling.

Thanks for the encouragement! I can't wait to grab that book and work on taking inventory in our homeschool. Like so many things, I have found that it's my own unrealistic and rigid expectations that drain the joy and contentment. It's a continual process to remind myself to lay down my expectations of myself and my kids (and specific to our first year homeschooling, my comparison to public schools, grade levels, standards, etc) and stay present and mindful. I needed that reminder to stop pushing just for the sake of pushing on!

We decided to pull our kids from public school almost 2 years ago because I felt called to do it; it was best for our family and how we want to raise and educate our kids. I needed to hear all of this advice so much, I watched it twice!
Because there is still such a stigma attached to homeschooling, I have felt pressure to do ALL THE THINGS...to impress others with all my kids know and are studying. Why?? Too much curriculum work makes them tired and miserable and fight back against it, when one of my goals in homeschooling was for them to ENJOY learning again. 🤦‍♀️
Live and learn - and listen to Jamie haha Relax. Enjoy. Find YOUR balance. Trust that what you're doing is enough, because it is.

How do you decide when to take a day off or know when you just need to get outside? Bc my children will figure out if they push me long enough they will have a few days off! lol! no kidding, so I am trying to learn boundaries since it is our first year homeschooling both kids, finding grace, and figuring this out. I have a 2nd grader and a 7th grader, 2nd grader with learning differences, and hyperness.

Mama...you will find your groove. For me...I can feel it all around. I don't take a break cause things get crazy...I take a break when I can feel it in my bones. Sounds weird...but true. I just know in my heart when it is time to step away. Kids push back...and that's totally normal!!! My kids don't want to or look forward to school, they just know what's expected of them. Then...I throw on a little curveball and give us ALL A BREAK!!!! SURPRISE! 😂🤣😂 Hahaha!

I think twice a year will be how we make changes after this first year. We have changed our rhythm 3 times this year. But I have learned to breathe more. Not sure I can reverse plan but I did learn to put it in pencil.

This video brought me to tears 😭 thank you so very much for this video. I so needed to hear everything you said! I’ve been homeschooling for 5 months and there have been many times that I just want to give up, and then I remind myself why I’m doing what I’m doing. Thank you! You’re so inspiring❤️

I love that ur preaching to urself as well as us!!! I love Reverse record keeping. We have to do lists instead of plans. I couldn’t use just one curriculum unless they seem just wats needed. Kids need a good foundation!!! We never read the Belgien Twins as there was no Motivation so I allowed a different Book. We can do different geography. I learnt reflectionive teaching in college. It’s awesome!!! Sorry I can’t spell.

I realized trying to plan was stressing me out so much unnecessarily! I started reverse record keeping and it works so much better for us!! Love your videos, your insight and your encouragement! I’m so bad about getting caught up in followings guide or “pushing” like you described. I have to remind myself there is no race and just enjoy the journey!!

All. Of. This. Jamie, thank you so much for sharing these 5 healthy habits! I know I’m constantly questioning whether I (and my 2 oldest that I’m homeschooling at this point) are keeping up with what they “should” be learning at their ages. And that’s when I have to ask, “WHO are we behind as homeschoolers and what does it matter in the grand scheme of things?” This is our race to run, and we will finish it when we’re meant to! Thank you for continuing to be such an encouragement to us all! ❤️

This is our first year homeschooling and I’ve already learned so much.
    I definitely needed this today❤️❤️
We plan on doing the reverse record keeping for the 21-22 school year! We stuck to a “schedule” this year and it’s been so stressful, down to personalizing my planner to a curriculum and then we changed curriculum🤦🏼‍♀️ so now we’re just recording attendance for the rest of this year.
Thank you so much for this video!

Thank you!! I needed this video and wasn't planning on clicking on it tonight. I am so glad I did. I can see how reverse record keeping and not pushing would work so well hand in hand. I plan as if my children and I are robots that will wake in a perfect mood and do school perfectly. It of course doesn't work out that way and then I am stuck to a plan and pushing forward no matter what. I am going to try and turn that around. I think it would also be so positive to write down what we accomplished instead of crossing out what we didn't. Thank you! Trying to remember to breath is difficult some days!

Thank you so much for sharing this. Felt like it was specifically aimed at me. Been losing my 'things' regularly for a few days, and I've been pushing and sucking the joy out of it. We've only been homeschooling since the pandemic started and I am trying to 'keep up' and please everyone outside our home. I was totally missing the point. Thank you for putting things back into perspective...💙

How do you get past exceptions of others? I, too, am the only one in my gigantic family that home schools my kids. I feel the weight and the looks and the thoughts of some in my family, like I have to prove to them that my kids are learning. It's a head load to carry.
