Apollo 11 Lunar Module Lego Set

  • I already have a lunar module from the Saturn V set, but now in time for the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 Lego released a larger minifigure scale set with a lot more detail. The vehicle splits into the Ascent and Descent module, and the Ascent module further separates into 3 parts so you can see the interior. The base plate is a custom build, including some lunar terrain features and astronaut footprints.
    Building took about 3 hours and I streamed the whole thing live at Twitch.tv / 433144596

    Scott, I was wondering if you could do a video concerning why the foil on space X's falcon second stage expands and contracts while in space. I've been curious about the physics behind that particular thing.

    • @genetichell
      @genetichell 5 лет назад +10

      This is just my theory, but it could have to do with the cryogenic fuel causing condensation on the surface underneath the foil, that then gradually boils off as the atmosphere gets thinner and the heat radiated from the engine increases.

    • @Gibson99
      @Gibson99 5 лет назад +1

      I noticed what almost seemed to be a heartbeat on the starlink sats themselves just prior to deployment. Happening at a consistent interval, but couldn't figure out what would have been causing it.

    • @bryanst.martin7134
      @bryanst.martin7134 5 лет назад +1

      Consider that there is some atmosphere in the foil. It was unlikely manufactured in a vacuum, but at the same time 1 bar might rupture it. So possibly a partial fill was performed to mitigate the stress. In space the air mass is wandering back and forth. Then again, the air could have been purged during flight and the lack of pressure either way allows the envelope to sway back and forth. I've noticed and pondered the same question.

    Also agree the Saturn V is the better overall set. Especially with a 50 year anniversary set for Apollo 11, they could have at least ditched the stickers and gone for printed parts. And I'm a bit disappointed that the legs can't be folded. They could have added a sliding ability to the lower attachment points and that would have been enough to retract the legs.
    Aside from that, a really good set with interesting functions and build techniques.

    Nice video. This is coming from someone who put together way too many Lego sets in my time and would be perfectly happy to never see another Lego. My point: Scott can make *anything* interesting and educational.
    Now, if IKEA (which is just Legos for adults) comes out with a lunar lander, I'd buy and build that in a heartbeat.

    Wow. There has to be some times I'm not following you on twitch anymore, because Sky has grown to a real demoiselle.

    You convinced me. I will buy both sets. Actually i went to "Smyths" to buy by the Moon Lander Set, but they didn't have it. Instead they had the Saturn V. So...

    despite the rcs being a little off I think great lego moccers can use that and make the altair lander. quite a bit of the base can be adapted and stretched. to somewhat remake Altair.
    Now all we need is Lego to make an Apollo CSM (most likely not minifig compatiable) to go along side with the LEM. The will have ALL my money.

    I hope LEGO makes more space stuff in future, it was a shame when the LEGO ideas Falcon Heavy didn't get through :(

      @@worm6942 I don't know, LEGO just decided not to approve the set. Maybe it's because Elon was smoking weed?

    Cool video, very enjoyable! But can we go back to 1:25 of the video "...obviously what we're going to be talking about..." - uhm, what you should have been talking about is the 4 (four!) minifigs on the smaller diorama. So one of the Apollo missions had a couple of stow-a-ways? :-) :-) :-)
    j/k Thanks for sharing a fun video.
