  • In this two part series Levi and Jesse will build themselves post vise stands. We have three blacksmith vises in the shop, one already on a stand one ready to be put on a stand and the third needs to be cleaned up and put on a stand. In part one of this series Levi and Jesse will clean up the third post vise together and Jesse will build his stand. They are going to be quite different in style so be sure to watch Levi's build coming up soon. This is the biggest shop project Jesse has tackled so far and he does a fantastic job.

    Excellent job, guys....as a man now over 40 years in metalworkin, i have to say you did well and learned a lot. Thats the way to go. When i was your age, i wasn´t by far so good as you, even as a son of a tool and die maker. Respect.

    Great work, guys, and an awesome looking stand. This looks like pretty much exactly what I had in mind for mine. I may even have seen a photo of it somewhere that I based my idea off of. I wanted to share a couple of tips that could have made some of the steps easier. For lining up the legs, when using a plumb bob like that, stick a clear container of water on the line, and drop the bob into it. It stops it from swaying around as much. A laser level would work even better, they are really handy things to have around. For surfacing larger areas, a handheld belt sander with the right belt does wonders. A stack of sanding discs, the ones you put a solid backer on, also work great, but they do tend to come apart if you get rough on them. Lastly, when using hole saws in the cordless drill, brace it on the OUTSIDE of your leg. Those suckers love to grab, same with larger bits, and taking that battery to the nuts isn't fun. Funny to watch, not so fun to have it happen. Again, great job, and I look forward to seeing the 2nd one.

    Nicely done guys. I'm happy that you filled the legs in, most people that I see using post vises don't seem to weigh them down, and that kind of defeats the purpose of them. If they aren't anchored down, they aren't really doing their full job. :) Can't wait to see the other one.

    • @GreenridgeMetalWorks

    • @InstrucTube
      @InstrucTube 4 года назад

      @@GreenridgeMetalWorks I figured as much, since you left tabs with anchor holes on the bottom. It'll do pretty good work just weighed down as it is, but if you can truly stabilize it then that vise will serve you well.

    Great Job! One Question (I am a novice!): Why do you preheat the plate before welding? Ist it because the material is so thick, that it would cool down too fast to make a long lasting welding
    ?

    • @GreenridgeMetalWorks
      @GreenridgeMetalWorks  3 года назад +2

      Yes that's right. My welder is not very big so I need to preheat the thick plate or the weld penetration will not be deep enough and the plate would quickly cool and that make the weld brittle. Thanks for watching!
