- What's up guys? This is Chad with Living The Van Life! Today's video is all Josh Gray's custom built 1983 volkswagen vanagon camper van. Josh and his wife spent 1 1/2 months in their van on a van road trip with their 2 young children, across the Western United States. In this episode of LTVL, Josh explains how his family of 4 lived in it for a month and a half on the road. Living in a vanagon vs a westfalia.

This was a surprisingly great video.
The van + mindset make the vehicle a stealth gem. Nobody would know the awesome value.
Yes indeed right? It’s interesting to hear different perspectives on van set ups.
heck yea!
Love the show Chad ,
and I will definitely follow Josh and his clan regards Cliff and family 🏴🇺🇸🇬🇧😁
thanks!!
I can’t want to get one. I’ve been looking nonstop

Well non of us are normal lol
@@traxoffgrid well dang.. does that make all of us norma!!!!!
I miss my vw buses! Great look around!★peace
I like these Van's finding one is a bear
Craigslist
Yes it is! Lots and lots and lots of time on craigslist and make alerts so you are first to know when someone within a thousand miles post a vanagon.
Fun fact:
In Germany we call these VW vans, “Bullis”
Holyfox no bullis is those hippy vans not this one
Great looking van and excellent video
Thanks for checking it out 🙌
Cool thanks for stopping by.
JOSH: Good vid. Sensible minimalist mods. Best regards
Thanks for watching!
Thanks John!
Where is the diesel heater mounted like the exhaust?
The exhaust comes out the floor below the heater.
We have our exhaust set up just like chads.. he has a video showing the install.
😊👍
🙌🏼👍🏼
cute. but take class c rv .like having a bathroom and a kitchen, esp having a kid. plus want a little space. love cooler instead those expensive ass refrigerator coolers! should got a pop top with kids! too cramped! but it was nice video! thanks Chad!
Thanks for checking it out! We are enjoying the minimalist approach of this van more then our pop top.. we also don't want a RV for our long trips right now.. maybe some day.. this van can get us anywhere easily!
I got entertainment thanks bro
I want one so bad to lift and diesel 4x4 on 38's
First one to comment
What’s the licorice tea, Stash?
what?
Nah. Not convinced..
Lived the van life in a 1972 kombi ?With the same color scheme cruising the East Coast from Syracuse to surf city riding up in the back over the engine completely politically incorrect today we were bootlegging earthworms for surf fishing
Wheres the vegan juicer?
Ha!
I love simplicity! And this is just that! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching.
We love the simplicity of it for sure!
Joshua Gray Awesome van. So clean! Is that ply board used on the interior? Do you mind clarifying the sort of stain you used - it looks great!
Congratulations, a big improvement and much more professional. But remember, I will be on 'like overdrive' watch!
Hahahaha. Thanks Amanda. I hope you “like” this one better. 😬
YES! Thanks Amanda!
Hi 👋 thank you for sharing and been my inspiration for VanLife and making RUclips videos!
Awesome! Thanks for watching! Thank you for being part of the channel
Please take a look at my Instagram page to see what I did for my diesel heater tank. I didn’t want a diesel tank in my van.
Nice job on your van 👍
Never mind. Found It. That’s pretty cool. Nice work!

Scott Deck Thanks Scott. I don’t know how to do all of that.

Great van set up, maybe a little more information on the Subaru swap?
Subaru 2.2L from a 96 legacy hooked up to a Vw 4 speed manual transmission.
Ours is a 1991 2.2 so its the OBD I meaning it could pass emission test in Cali. Joey and I went and picked it up out of a subaru that was having a failing transition for about $500 it had about 150k miles.. Joey had the heads milled, gaskets, belts, and all that good stuff.. so it runs like a champ. I installed a 2.2 in our Westfalia (our van before this one) at chads old shop using a Rocky Mountain Westy full kit and a subaru 1996 EJ 2.2 got it done mostly by myself in i believe 7 days many of the days being after work.. The most confusing for me was the wiring and chad helped me out on that a lot but we got it up and going pretty quick!
Where is his water and toilet facilities? What do they use for a sink? Where does he store camping utensils, cookware, food, and dishware?
No toilet facilities and no sink. That’s why they weren’t featured in the video. In a van set up like this you have to get out of the “house” mentality and think of “camping”. Just as a tent provides you shelter with no sink and toilet facilities while camping, a van provides you a more stable shelter with a few more amenities than a tent. It’s on 4 wheels, provides 12v power and a heat source. In the video, Josh explains where he kept food and showed the cabinets and plastic drawers where they keep their camping goods. Check out the video.
@@LivingTheVanLife I have camped all my life. My camper shell is loaded at all times in case of wildfire evacuation. I have a portable toilet, sink, campstove oven combination. Josh said they went and camped in the desert. Where did they get their water and where did they go to the bathroom?
Nice. That’s cool. That’s a great question for Josh. I don’t think they were anywhere off the grid for more than a day or two. If It were me in that situation in the desert, I’d buy 2-3 gallons of water to have onboard for drinking and cooking and emergencies. And if it were truly off grid in the desert, being a male, I’d be finding bushes for the bathroom duties. Having a female counterpart or a family, I’d most likely seek a camping spot with bathroom facilities near by.
this van isn't a full camper. I would consider between a small like travel trailer and a back packing tent camping set up. We have jugs of water, so unlike backpacking we can have many many gallons of drinking and cooking water. Toilets are like back packing... the ground. Sink... again like backpacking no sink just poor the water on the ground. The camping utensils, cookware, food, and dishes go in the cabinet or bags, so we can bring significantly more then when you go backpack camping and it makes vanlife adventures far more luxury then backpacking but vanlife voyages compared to 15-30+ foot camper trailer are very different. hope that clarifies some of your questions.
Joshua Gray
I think a van is personal. Your personal decisions on how you’d like to use it. I think age has its role in it to. 20 years ago I wouldn’t have put a toilet & shower in a van. Mid 50s almost 60 it was the first thing I built in. You’ve got a great van for you and your family
Rad, simple build! He can probably get one of those collapsible 6 or 8 foot ladders for under $100.
True that.
True.. I wanna get one that permanently mounts on the side though.
Wow...amazing...
It’s a cool set up!
Too cool!!! Where in Eastern WA did you find it?? In in Walla Walla!! Pretty far east!!! ;)
It was in Othello actually.
What’s up with the sunglasses? Too cool to vlog without?
Neat 84 and a half. Thanks for sharing Chad. Simplicity has its advantages, I guess I just need more stuff. And it's just me. No wife or kids, and I still need more room, and cupboards and cubby holes. I mean if I'm going to live in one full time.
Adapting to living in small minimal spaces is a great life lesson. It teaches us that we don’t need material. I felt the same as you when I started vanlife. And I continue to dwindle my belongings. Even in the westfalia, my cabinets are filled with things I don’t use for months at a time. I try to do a weekly inventory and get rid of anything I haven’t used in my van.
yeah for full time living a little more would be great! We actually live in a 1989 Airstream that we renovated its a 34 foot.. it has everything and more!
@@JoshuaThomasGray nice.
@@JoshuaThomasGray I noticed the more you have, the less freedom you have. And the less you have, the more freedom you have. More able to move about, less gas usage, easier to find parking, and stealth camping. All at the cost of comfort. I'm trying to find a medium that works for me. I'm 56 and need some comfort, Bul love freedom.
Thank you so much for putting the time and work into this channel!!! This has been my favorite vanagon for a while so to find this video made my day.
CHAD 👍👍
Thanks for watching!
Fantastic, thanks for all the ideas. I own a Jeep TJ that overland in and I am now gonna build that table off the back.

Do you guys think 300k is to much on an engine on a 80 vow Westie? I’m not sure if the engine was rebuilt.
That’s a lot of miles. My van has 290,000 and it’s not the original miles. If they are perfectly maintained, they will go a long time. But perfect maintenance almost never happens.
If its a diesel I'd say go for it, a lot of motors that are turnkey install ready.
It is cool that they have made this Vanagon work for them to take on long adventures. They are making memories that their boys will have forever.
What ever happened to the video about the other camper in your snowstorm video?
WC? Battery?
Cool!!!
Please do a part 2... I am interested in the subaru engine swap...
