      That is the first "real" cue I bought myself, in the 80s.(I must be old). It still plays great but it is standard deflection (I'm too used to LD these days) and the shaft and joints are not readily available if I break it. So I keep it on the wall. That cue brings me thousands of memories, as you can imagine. It was made by Players, but the quality was much higher then, verses how most cues in that price range are made today. It cost $200 back in the 80s. I would not sell it for $1,000. Maybe $1,100.

    A few things to unpack here: Many players, especially APA 3s and even 4s, miss the money ball BECAUSE it's the money ball. Muscles tighten up, negative thoughts creep in, and the player sabotages himself. Thinking about position (not complex position, just the natural position to where the cue ball wants to roll) distracts such a player from his auto-sharking. I liken it to times when I was out of stroke, and started thinking about my stroke instead of just letting my subconscious mind take care of the stroke. Just made everything worse. But I played a defensive shot, mostly focused on position, and my stroke straightened itself out! I'm not saying the above will work for every player who gets spooked by the 8 ball, but it can help many.

    Another issue with shooting a black ball in a dark setting, (low light billiard halls or bars) visualizing your fractional aiming point can be an issue for some.
    I’ve noticed this on occasion when the eight was along the cushion, the black ball does not stand out like a lighter colored solid ball.
    As for other games that help with eight ball, One Pocket ranks up there I’ve found. One Pocket is my favorite game and many things I’ve learned while playing it, have carried over to my eight ball game.
    Great video and thanks Brian.
    Btw, I’ve actually never attempted to shoot any rolling ball into a pocket in my 2 1/2 years playing the game…you make it look easy 👍🏻💪🏻👍🏻

    Shooting 8 ball came easy to me, I started with 9 ball actually.
    Every one has their own way of shooting, I’ve heard the shadow system( not sure if that is the actual name) it’s when you line the ball with a object across. I tried it, but the thought of not looking at the table is just to complicated, I’ve heard look at the que ball last which don’t make sense either similar to walking with your head down. I even went to quadrants to break down each portion of the diamond system by cubic inches which was similar to the shadow except I replaced it with staring at the felt that got mesmerizing. After all that repetition and confidence was the best.

    I'm a master level in 8 ball, when I'm not practicing 8, I like practicing ten ball. It's harder to break than 9, and you have one more ball on the table to deal with.
    I get mad at myself in games when I run the table, make all the hard shots, then don't take my time on the easy 8 shot and miss it. Sometimes I just get down and shoot and don't take the time to aim the ball. I need to slow down.🤔😆

  • @jeffboswell68
    @jeffboswell68 10 месяцев назад +4

    I prefer to warm up on a table by myself. Is that weird? The players on my league teams (esp lower level APA players) dont get it. Playing a "game" is not warming up for me. When I warm up, I like to re-shoot shots I miss until I make it at least 3 times in a row. Or maybe just shoot the draw drill with a line of balls at the center pockets to get my stroke established. The only time I dont mind "warming up" playing games, is if I'm done warming up by myself. Does this make me a pool snob?
    If I have to play with someone, due to table availability I always rack 8ball, no matter what discipline we're playing that day, and I shoot mainly safety shots. It helps me with ball control and helps them get out of safeties they don't normally see. LOL, they usually don't understand until they face that shot in a match and know what to do because I showed them "warming up". Its quite satisfying.
    Thanks for the great content as usual B. Keep it up. Cant wait for the next one!

Group A practiced shooting free throws (for real) for 1 hour a day for 30 days. Group B sat in a quiet room and visualized shooting free throws for 1 hour a day for 30 days. Totally agree with you on the "play position for another shot when on the eight ball." The reasons you gave for not agreeing with that are exactly the reasons I think it is foolish. Just make the ball! I think playing position on the next ball MIGHT help some people but it isn't going to help a majority of people.
    Your suggestion about shooting the eight ball, many times, in other drills is much better.
    I saw a guy doing this (but with nine ball) in the Philippines a few years ago. He was practicing and telling me the "the key to sinking the nine ball is to think about there being a 10 ball and you have to get position for that ball." We ended up playing probably 40 games of nine ball and he only missed maybe two nine ball shots while we played. Why? Because he was such a bad shooter that he rarely had a shot on the nine to win any game.
    After playing I, politely as I could, told him the "issue with you missing nine balls isn't because you are tense; are you tense on the one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, and eight? Because you also miss a lot of those."
    Well that comment didn't go down well, even though I said it fairly politely and with a smile on my face. He was mad but after an hour or so he says "hey man, I think you are right. I just need to be a lot better at pocketing balls."
    Yep, just work on ball pocketing skills as much as you can. When down on the eight, or nine in nine ball, or ten in ten ball, all you have to do is make the shot. So work on THAT. This is why I like this channel - real world pool playing advice and not nonsense that someone hears and pushes it along.

I am a more then advanced novice player and I really like playing players that can kick my bootie. I learn. Just met a fellow a couple of days ago that was a definite challenge......he was trembling on the on the eight. I could see it happening even though he was a good player. He did win. I watch his eyes, fingers, tip and stroke position and it always seems to change on the eight ball shot. The cloth color, lighting etc all make the eight ball shot "money ball" interesting. That is a good idea to just shoot black balls. Keep up the good work my friend. Mike in Olympia WA, USA

    Great video!! I’ve struggled with position play. Sometimes I do well but other times I don’t. I heard that theory about playing position when on the eight and I really think it’s a stupid theory. Just make the eight!! LOL! However, when I’m not on the eight and trying to play position, I find my self thinking more about the position I want and not making the ball I’m shooting at, which causes me to miss. I’ve been working hard at not doing this and concentrating more on making the ball. I know I need to let go of the position once I’ve established what needs to be done, but it’s hard sometimes.
    I play both 8 and 9 ball in league and I have to say, 9 ball is my favorite game. I believe you when you say it helps the 8 ball game. I have to think about my shots more in order to get position on the next ball. It has definitely improved my eight ball game.
    Thanks for your videos, I watch them everyday, sometimes over and over. I always look forward to the notification when a new one comes out. My Christmas present to me this year is purchasing your video package, possibly the one with the zoom classes included! Hey Brian I love your videos! I make a greater percentage of 8 balls when I am playing position. I don't pretend that I am trying to get on another ball but I am being very intentional about where the cue ball is going to stop. This is part of my normal routine. If and when I leave it out my stroke gets sloppy and I can miss extremely easy shots.

      @@FXBilliards that’s why my boy Danny Green never went fully pro and preferred hustling …..RIP🙏. He was an amazing player though (and a bit of a dirtbag too lol)

      @@FXBilliards You know Brian your comment about the pros not making enough money is so true. It is getting better, but has a long ways to go. I just watched, last week, Ko Pi Chung win the Chinese-Taipai Open. The winning share was $5000. That is sorta sad actually. I was in the Philippines a few years ago (I actually lived there for 16 years) and was playing a very good player and I told him I thought he was professional level or very close to it.
      He said he had thought about turning pro but could actually make MORE money gambling and playing the small regional tournaments than turning pro and playing in the much bigger events. I hope by the time I drop over dead the purses in these bigger tournaments get a lot bigger. Pool is such a great game and the skill level the pros have is amazing - they should be playing for more.

      I'm too old to think it's a good idea: I know better. Also I have a family, houses and toys to take care of. The 50k a year the average pro makes is not gonna get you there. That's why you see so many of them running to RUclips to make money. It's sad that any group of people who are the "best in the world" at anything, would make so little money. Not to mention the endless travel in shitty cars staying in shitty hotels in places they don't even get to enjoy because they cant afford to enjoy the sites. It's not worth it these days. Maybe 30 years ago, or 10 years from now. But not these days. I'v been telling young guys for years. Learn to play poker and blackjack as a counter, and you will make a lot more money and live a nicer lifestyle. That is where I made my most money in the last 20 years. As much as I love pool, CARDS pay a lot better. - I was interviewed for a new TV show that will be coming out in 2024 where we cover this very subject. I will keep you guys updated as we get close. And I will be starting my poker channel soon. The goal is to do for poker players what we do for pool players. Hope you will subscribe, even if you don't play cards ♠️ ♠️ ♠️

    What is your opinion of One Pocket?

      I think it’s a great game, but I don’t play it because I don’t play it well. I think I lack the patience to shoot so many shots in a row without pocketing balls. But at one of my favorite pool halls, they play at constantly.

    Bryan! Thanks as always for your videos. Can you explain what you mean by "8-ball bails you out"?

    • @FXBilliards
      @FXBilliards  10 месяцев назад +2

      When I say eight ball bails you out what I’m saying is there’s so many options on the table that when players don’t get in position, they get bailed out by having their other balls on the table. A player can play bad position seven times in a row and still run a rack. Thanks for watching. I hope that answers your question.
