    Awesome job on the video. I hike the HST in August 2017. There was a spot on the trail that blew out from all the heavy snow. It was a pretty big section and there was a lot of chatter about how everyone was going to get across. Fortunately, the trail crew arrived the day before we hit that section and they installed hand holds (loops) so we could use them to get across. That made the section of trail pretty memorable. We had to take our packs off and pass them to the other side. Exciting! All the brush on the section right after Hamilton Lake was pretty annoying. I’m so glad we spent the night at the Hamilton so we could hit that uphill grind early in the morning. I wish we could have stayed at Moraine Lake. Funny - the section between Junction Meadow and Moraine Lake was mentally tough. I kept thinking it was going to be all down hill. I sprained my ankle about a half mile past the lake. I will never forget how challenging the trail was down to Kern Canyon. And it was so hot! Looking forward to your next video!

    Beautiful! I'll bet it smells good too. Nothing like the scent of high pine trees, and especially after it rains. I went to the sequoias a few times, but it's time to go again because I don't remember much of it! Thanks for letting us partake in your amazing journey.

    Very nice video. Makes the hike very real. Speaking if which, doesn’t look like a place amenable to digging catholes. So, did you carry your poop out?

    • @RolandLabana
      @RolandLabana  4 месяца назад

      Thanks for watching! Most of the way you dig holes. In the Whitney zone, you are required to carry out. The Whitney zone starts after Crab Tree. And yeah it’s because it’s all granite.

      Yes he did! First day from WP to Three Rivers and the next morning to get permit and then to trail head. He can do whatever itinerary you need. Great guy!

    Hey, I want to do this trail in a couple of weeks, but I have mild Acrophobia (fear of heights) and watching the clips of those who pass thru the tunnel, and that general stretch of trail (with the cliff on the side) is ginning up my fear. How bad is that path in regards to heights. I'm trying to pscyh myself out and thinking its not that bad.. and its just about a half mile of it (do you know the length, where its sketch like that?). How did you deal with the cliff on one side and the thinnish path?

    • @RolandLabana
      @RolandLabana  Год назад +1

      Thanks for watching. I would say the part that I found the worst was the last bit up to the summit of Whitney. I didn’t really find any other areas worrisome. I will say the camera makes it look way worse than it is. It makes it look much more narrow than it is. That said you might find a few spots somewhat triggering but overall most is totally not. If it’s worth anything, I met a guy who also had severe fear of heights and he had no issues whatsoever until about a quarter mile from the summit. That part is def scary.
      But that very last part can be totally avoided because it’s an offshoot from trail crest. If you don’t want to do the final summit just continue on from trail crest and you’ll be heading down to Portal.
      Good luck!!

      @@RolandLabana Thanks. I am not going to Whitney (is that what you mean when you say "summit"). I'm not too knowledgeable about the areas.. so not sure what you mean by Summit here. I am breaking off a little ways past Hamilton Lakes to Big 5 Lakes. You pass thru there, Hamilton Lakes, right from Crescent Meadows? That's where that tunnel is, I speak of, right?

      @@venicebeachsurfer got it! You’re not going the whole way. I think the sections you mention are fine and not too scary then. Enjoy!!

    • @RolandLabana
      @RolandLabana  Год назад

      Thanks for watching! I can't remember exactly but it wasn't that cheap, BUT, it was totally worth it! And Trent got us a place to stay in a trailer park the night before, so it worked out great! If I guess, I think it was around $300, but that was split between a few of us. He's a great guy and also took us to the best place to grab food and other supplies. And it included a ride to the trailhead the next morning.

    Was wondering if you had to do a special lottery or how did you obtain permit

    • @RolandLabana
      @RolandLabana  3 года назад

      Thanks for watching! Yes, you do need a permit for this trail. Check out the information here - www.nps.gov/seki/planyourvisit/high-sierra-trail.htm. And go to this page to make a reservation when they open - www.recreation.gov/permits/445857.
      I believe permits for 2022 open in a month or so, so grab them early if you're interested.

    Did you guys take bear cans or rely on the bear boxes?

    • @RolandLabana
      @RolandLabana  3 года назад +1

      We took bear cans. But we also used boxes because most of the camps we stayed at had them. And once you leave Crabtree, then you have to have cans because there are no more bear boxes. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

    • @robbrandtBSA
      @robbrandtBSA 3 года назад +1

      right, I have a 3 day sized can just wondering if I can rely on boxes before Crabtree. There was always plenty of room in them.

    • @RolandLabana
      @RolandLabana  3 года назад

      @@robbrandtBSA yes. If I did this trail again I’d prolly opt for the smaller bear can and rely on boxes the rest of they way. But be ready in case you don’t make it to an established camp too.
