@@CharlesHarrisonMusicTuition Right now I am watching your other videos (plenty of exciting materials), in particular those where you explain what to play over chord changes. Of course I have to transpose everything one whole step up on tenor, but your videos are still much more clear to me than some other videos made by sax players. So thank you for your efforts and I'll let you know in the comment section if I have any questions or enquiries.
@@CharlesHarrisonMusicTuition Excuse me Charles, I have a question. In the 14th bar the chord is F7 and as you said we can play Bb major scale over it. But the original melody (see for instance Chet Baker's vocal version) contains an E note. In other words, the original melody in that part seems to use F major scale which clashes with F dominant seven. How is that? Did I miss something?
Hi Mate, in the lead sheet at this point the melody is simply G F G F, there is no E. If players such as Chet have added an E within the bar, it is simply a decoration on the original melody and this would be drawn from the dominant bebop scale, in this instance F G A Bb C D Eb E F. In the context of Bb major, this would be having the perfect 4th and the raised 4th (Lydian) or flattened 5th (blues note) within the same scale, a very common trick. Don't be too put off when you hear the greats 'breaking the rules', they have learned the rules and are now experts at breaking them effectively. I hope that helps!!
@@CharlesHarrisonMusicTuition thanks a lot for your message and sorry for my late response. I'd like to see a video like these on Fly me to the Moon. Maybe you've already done it and I didin't find it yet. There's a lot of great and helpful stuff on your channel! Congrats for your work! Cheers
@@CharlesHarrisonMusicTuition I am practicing There Will Never Be Another You on keyboards at the moment, just working on the melody and chords, then looking to use the Dim 6th harmony scale to make it more elaborate.
@@hello55125 Fantastic. It's a beautiful tune, and there is plenty of scope for those lovely 6th diminished colours. Best of luck with it. Please let me know if there are any of topics you'd like discussed in a future video. Cheers!
Thanks so much for that Bruno! How are things going with your playing? Are there any areas in particular which you would appreciate clarification or some more lessons filmed about? Cheers again!
@@CharlesHarrisonMusicTuition this is actually exactly what i was looking for, i'm trying to enter a jazz music school here in argentina and this song among 2 others are the final exam. One of the other two is tenor madness but i don't know if You have any videos on jazz blues, if You don't, i think it would be very helpful!
Hi Bruno- I did a lesson ages ago called 'Why Your Blues Sucks' [ ruclips.net/video/T_rcZD7rhS4/видео.html ]. It's nowhere near as good in terms of quality as my recent videos but I think the topics are still really important and I wish I had known them when I was applying for schools. Which school are you applying to and when is your audition? Feel free to ask anything at all if it will help you I would be delighted to help and always am! Cheers
Thanks you for this great video ! Just subscribed! Btw is is it possible for you to do an analysis on a Bossa nova song ? More specifically Chega de saudade by Joao Gilberto I love that song, but im having a hard time tryna improvise over it, thanks again !and keep up the good work!
Okay I can follow everything you are doing but I have played a long time. For someone who has not played for a long time. Don't you think you might be moving a little too fast. The speed you are moving at can be understood by me BUT If I trying to learn this and didn't already know it. You are moving really fast. It is like a catch 22.
Definitely. I approach each video differently, as I'm unable to explain every single approach from the ground up every time. My overarching concept is that I make videos which I feel I would have benefited from when I was studying standards. Unfortunately it won't be appropriate for everybody but it would be impossible for me to do that. My more recent jazz standard exploration took place over 3 videos about an hour in total which hopefully some people might prefer. I am also aware that although RUclips is a fantastic platform, it doesn't naturally lend itself to 'linear progression' very well. I am working on a solution to this problem which will have a natural entry point for players of all abilities as I hope to help as many students develop their playing as possible. Many thanks for taking the time to leave your thoughts, I greatly appreciate it. Cheers!
I am a saxophone player and I find your video very informative and helpful. Thank you.

The Dm7b5 in bar 3 comes from Eb major scale, but why are we using C harmonic minor? Please explain thank you in advance
It does but it's a shared chord between the two scales. This is chord ii in a ii v I into c minor. Cheers
