    Love your videos on traps and lookas to how tochange them or add to them . I like to add in little snippets to see if the players listen to what are sometimes random chats in a bar. For this encounter I would add little snippets hinting at Farmer bill adding eels to his well. Or someone using the berries to fish for the eels. As for encounters the well could be in the middle of an orchard and deadly little critters could be there. A confusion effect could be there so as to prevent the members from which remembering which well is which. The berries could be limityed and little pixies could steal the berries. oh so many ways to use this as a basis for traps. ley me know if you want me to tell you a few of my ideas.

    My thoughts have gone in the opposite direction of the scenario. The quest giver needs the water from the poisoned well. Only one of the wells has this unique poison. The eels are in one of the four wells, but some need to be moved to the others. They do cleanse two of the other three wells when moved (maybe not poisoned, but unclean water). The berries are still relevant because they can be used to bring the eels up from the bottom of the well they are currently in.
    I like the scenario as presented. My mind just randomly went in a different direction. 😊

    Why wouldn't they have been told there were 4 wells, maybe b/c there was originally only 1 well. Perhaps there is a guardian that changes up how it is protected from time to time, and it was recently changed like this.
    Maybe there always have been 4 wells, that are from the same source, but they were magically posioned to counter act the magical property of the water recently and someone put the eels to counter the counter. But who? And why didn't they put it in all 4 wells. What is the cardinal or ordinal directions the wells are pointing in. Maybe if you follow the direction of the good well you'll meet the person that put the eels in and maybe find out more?

    • @WallyDM
      @WallyDM  2 года назад +4

      I love this level of brainstorming! Building an entire encounter, lore and reasoning around a puzzle like this is amazing. I think on first intentions, I just figured that whoever hired them simply forgot to mention that there were 4 wells.
      Out of what you presented here, I do like the idea of 4 wells always existing, but they have recently taken on poisoned properties and/or the eels were added to one of them. Perhaps a centaur druid? Who knows!? Thank you my friend for a splendid display of encounter building!

    I prefer the old poison rules, where the poison directly attacked one of your stats. So there was always a danger, because you didn't loose 2d6 hp, you lost 2d6 strength for example.
    I really like this puzzle. It's simple and uses both player reasoning and character skill to solve.

    • @WallyDM
      @WallyDM  2 года назад +1

      Ah, yes. Ability Damage or ability drain. Those rules were cool. In fact, I still use them. I could definitely see applying them here. 1d4 points of STR or CON damage (or both) if you drink from the wrong well. I dig it!

    And then along comes the caster, who casts detect poison, and the whole puzzle is over.

    • @WallyDM
      @WallyDM  2 года назад

      Honestly, that's not a bad thing! If the characters have Detect Poison prepared and solve it via the alternate solution, fantastic. I'm totally cool with that. But... Detect Poison is a situational spell and I'm hedging a bet that IF there is a Cleric or Druid in the party, they will not have this spell prepared. So, they may need to camp and take a long rest so they can prepare it in the morning. The longer they stay in the area, the greater the chance for an encounter. Perhaps this is a place that an Ogre, Troll, or Giant will visit once or twice per day? Who knows! Anyways, thank you for watching. Hope you subscribe and stick around the channel for a while. :-) Cheers!

    Cast light onto a stone, lower it into the well on a rope and you will be able to see if anything is in the well. Also I think that there is a "detect poison" spell. Magic messes up alot of puzzles. One might want to have an antimagic field around anything like this to make it more difficult.

    • @WallyDM
      @WallyDM  2 года назад +2

      Definitely solid ideas. Although, I don't think the light spell would do much beyond a small bright spot in opaque, cloudy, water. And, I love the idea of someone having the Detect Poison spell prepared so they could ritual cast it. I'm 100% cool with that plan coming together for them. Cheers, buddy! Hope you have been well!

      Magic messes up a lot of things in D&D. Exploration, traps, puzzles, survival. They are all trivial with having the right spell, often hilariously low level one. It was such an annoyance, that some poisons in supplements were made out of two or more inane components that only created poison when mixed together.

    A medicine check would tell you they're dead, for how long, and maybe some clues about the poison like blue around the mouth. You would need an investigation check to give the player the deduction that they were poisoned if they didn't already figure that out by the clues. Thanks for the puzzle! Love your work.

    I think this is not a good puzzle, because the intended solution relies too much on knowledge that the DM just fiats into existence for the purpose of it (like where in hell do any fish live in any wells with drinking water?). Besides, there is quite a lot of unintended solutions, which are pretty anti-climactic. Detect poison and disease is accessible to any cleric or druid after one long rest, summoning spells exist, you get the idea. Or someone in the party has more than one vial so they don't even have to solve it, they can just take a sample of each and redouble the poisonous vials as a murder instrument.
    You could still use the basic principle of "if something's living in it, it's probably not poisoned" tho it'd make more sense for like streams or ponds. Also, you might turn it into an actual self contained puzzle (not relying on a made up knowledge), if you have 4 bodies of water and only 3 of them have berries floating on the water floor.

    • @WallyDM
      @WallyDM  2 года назад

      Ah, see, I like the puzzle because it offers many different possible solutions. Also, it is an easy puzzle. Not every puzzle has to be a brain buster. Sure, my solution provided berries and eels, but players may come up with something even more interesting. A few things. Did you know that the oldest living Eel in the world recently died in Sweden? They used to put eels in their wells to filter out impurities and eat insects. So, yeah. That used to totally be a thing. Also, Detect Poison IS accessible to any cleric or druid after a long rest. I love this solution! IN the meantime, they will need to camp out somewhere and wait for that long rest. That is when I'll have a troll or giant show up for a combat encounter. The next day, cast detect poison, get the correct water and go home. Also, we will need to have a cleric/druid in the party. I've ran many games where there was neither of these.
      I do like your idea on the streams or ponds. I think that would be a lot of fun. Perhaps four ponds were all connected at one point, and a drought occurred, separating them into 4 different areas. I can definitely get behind that.
      But regardless... thank you for the differing point of view, I appreciate that! And, thank you for watching my video. I hope that you will subscribe and stick around for a while. Cheers!

    why would players think to drop the berries in the water without already knowing the eel thing?

    • @WallyDM
      @WallyDM  2 года назад +1

      Would be up to the Dungeon Master to set up and add some mystery. When I ran this, the characters knew that there was a well that had magical waters that they needed, but the alchemist did not know which of the wells it was. In this scenario, I want the PCs to think this is an easy task. Go get the vial of water and bring it back. But, when they get there, it is evident that some important information was either left out, not communicated, or unknown.
      Long story short, my players messed around for a bit, but they new the berries were key. Probably because of the way I described them and made them seem important. I think it took them about 1-2 minutes to solve. Hope this helps solve some questions. Thank you for watching my video. Cheers!

    • @WallyDM
      @WallyDM  2 года назад +1

      Nah, don't worry about your Eel knowledge George. These are the type of things that we can discover "in-game" with Nature checks. Ya know, I think its interesting that you thought the eels may actually be the problem. I could definitely see a reverse scenario where they were poisoning or contaminating the well. So, I dig your answer. That's the fun thing about my Puzzle videos. I give an answer, sure. But it doesn't necessarily mean it is the best answer or the only answer. Detect poison spell?

    • @WallyDM

      Would definitely work well for solving the puzzle... but, the problem with that spell is the Druid/Cleric must have the spell prepared to cast it.
