Another excellent video! Thank you so much for letting us be a part of this project. We really enjoyed working with your team to produce the animations and bring this ship back to life!
I actually live in Elefsina, the little town right next to the wreck. When I was a kid, whenever we would pass by the wreck I was almost half way outside the window of the car. It always seemed fascinating to me. My parents have told me that no government has ever bothered to do anything with the wreck. It has been forgotten about.
@@Meatball2022 The hull plating is extremely thick. The waters appear calm, so the outer hull above the water will take decades more to corrode through. it's a shame this vessel ended up like this, but, in a way, it's a better fate then simply being scrapped. Huge props to you Jake, and many others for keeping stories like these alive.
It's really sad we can't save any ocean liners outside the Queen Mary, I can think of so many ships civilian and military that should still be with us as museum ships.
Scrapping it was 100% the right decision and only didn't happen because greedy owners waited for scraps prices to rise. Instead it's an ecological hazard slowly poisoning the water it's decaying in....
How is being litter in nature a better fate than being scrapped? These wrecks and their irresposible owners who do not care to remove them, while interesting, are all destorying natural environments.
For almost the last ten years, your videos have always been a constant form of comfort, thank you for your videos Jake!! Keep doing what you’re doing!!
I'm so glad you covered her story, I've been wanting a video of Med Sky from you and in your effortlessly professional style for a while. She really was just a gorgeous ship in her prime, and it's genuinely very cool that you can still visit her, even if she's a little worse for wear. Cheers.
Nice work. I have her CITY OF YORK bell, which I bought from her watchman after spending a day on board documenting her from top to bottom in Patras in the late 90s. She actually rolled over quite quickly after she was moved to her current location.
@@BrightSunFilms I have over a thousand hours of footage of ships like her, taken during my many trips around the globe in search of historic liners and cruise ships over the past 30 plus years. In addition to MED SKY, I also have her sister, at the time called ALICE, documented while she was laid up in Chalkis. My RUclips channel, which only has a tiny fraction of your viewership, contains many videos about ships like ACHILLE LAURO, WINDSOR CASTLE, BRITANIS, LEONID SOBINOV, FAIRSTAR, SHANGHAI and more. I've also made nine trips to Alang to document and rescue items from classic ships and two to Aliaga. Please have a look sometime and if there is anything you need, let me know. :)
It really is a shame the cruise ship experience has evolved the way it has- MEGA floating amusement parks, in place of the calm sleek vessels of the past. Thank you, Jake, for these little glimpses of the past!
Same, the anxiety I felt during the sections of video showing the interior half submerged was overwhelming. I would be just fine looking at this ship from the shore
Same, i cant help but jump back slightly whenever there is submerged things in the ocean or any body of water in videos i watch. Besides having submechanophobia i have thalassophobia.
I love the way Med Sky's design seems to blend the 50s appearance of the ship with the 70s overhaul. Some other older ocean liners that were given a second life as cruise ships lose their form and feel really disjointed - this redesign feels complementary to the point of almost being retrofuturistic.
The videos and photos from inside had me shaking my head and physically backing away from my screen… *HARD NO* for me ever going inside a ship like that. I’m glad you gave me a name for what I’m feeling 👀
Always love your deep dives (no pun intended) into these subjects, it's surprisingly fascinating and your narration style and storytelling expertise are just terrific. Your coverage of the Oceanos is a perennial favorite.
The adjacent villa, "Villa Eutaxia" is worth mentioning and visiting. It's a striking abandoned property with modernist architecture and magnificent landscaping. It too has an interesting history and it's adjacency to the wreck makes it all the more appealing. The old train tracks running next it are also amazing. All in all just a top tier place for urban exploration. Some very very observant people might also recognise the villa from Cronenberg's recent film "Crimes of the Future" where it appears in the opening sequence.
Wow... Another great documentary. I was surprised, thought, as I had spent 2 nights aboard this vessel while it was at Guantanamo Bay. I was temporary duty in the Air Force, attached to the Air Transportable Hospital set up to care for the refugees housed there in tent cities.

Yo, I literally learned about this today after I looked up a different ship (the Soviet liner Ivan Franko that appears at 5:35). What a mega coincidence.
Thrilled to see Port Elizabeth and Durban had their day as ship names. I sailed as a child on a boat from Cape Town to Durban, a mail ship that was terrifying to me as a small child.
Jaaaaaaaaaaake! I have been so curious about this ship ever since I viewed it on Google maps. Thank you and I’m really looking forward to your Queen Elizabeth 2 review I wantsssss da big boooooats!!!!!!!!!!
Fascinating Vid. They were beautiful ships as built, but horrible conversions. The insides are really strange, a ship caught in time. As for the CGI models, they are amazing. Thanks for this glimpse.
These ships retired, proud of what they have done even though they no longer serve. It's clear they still serve the sea creatures and sometimes people who come to visit.
I too suffer from submechanophobia! But until this video I did not know it had a name. Buoys chains or anything that vanish into the abyss really make my skin crawl.
Awesome video. Apparently I drove past this wreck 4 times on my trips to Greece, but I never knew it was there. I'll definitely stop by the side of the road to take a look at it next time. I did visit the Dimitrios shipwreck near Githion, which you can just walk up to and touch the hull without your feet even getting wet.
I actually have seen this vessel myself, I took a trip to Greece with my best friend a couple years back, and I was fascinated with all the shipwrecks in this harbor, there are genuinely so many, this is definitely the most striking of them though, it was truly fascinating to see it in person and research it myself, I have a couple posts of the pictures I’ve taken on R/Shipwrecks, if anyone wants to check them out! Should be under Mediterranean Sky or City of York I kind of forget
Amazing video jake! I am kind of surprised that she hasnt been refloated yet and scrapped and based on the research I have done over the years on this vessel, it seems that nothing really is in the cards for her, the logistics of physically trying to refloat it is daunting not to mention the cost associated with it. Plus she does attract tourism for sure so it may help the economy that the vessel is their even if it maybe an eye sore for the locals.
Nice you did a story about this ship, cause I've been a fan of the 1UP graffiti artists and I've always been wondering the story of the ship they put one of their biggest graffiti logo. Glad you made a video about that ship, just like you're other videos about things I didn't know about. Keep up the good work Jake.
