Unless your aim is betrayed by the shitty pistol cartridges of the 19th century. Remember in "Unforgiven" when Munny has a misfire with his second round in the shotgun? A common occurrence which can be caused by paper shotgun shells (It happened to me on my 2nd deer hunt in 1967). Brass cartridges could have poor primers, inefficient or faulty gunpowder, and brass that's too soft to create proper compression for max firepower.

Unless you're standing on a range with a bunch of other, like-minded friends, the only thing that flashy tricks and showing off gets you is a challenge by someone who thinks they have something to prove, rather than someone with the confidence to know he has nothing to prove and they are thd most dangerous type. This advice applies across the board and not just to gunfights because, it's about human nature. They may not be "the best" but, they usually don't know what they don't know and that makes them more aggressive and less predictable and therefore, someone to avoid in the first place. I don't own any guns anymore. When I was young I was a damn good shot with a rifle or a shotgun. Never shot a pistol enough to get good with one. And most times I couldn't hit with a pistol but the targets were much smaller than a man. Would I get rattled under fire? Probably, but not enough that I couldn't return accurate fire. But, like I said to begin with, I don't own any guns anymore. But anyone getting a gun for home defense that isn't experienced at shooting, imho, they should get a 12 guage semi auto shotgun(shortest barrel you can find) with 00 buck shot 3" magnum shells. It puts A LOT of lead in the air with each pull of the trigger. You shoot an intruder & chances are, he ain't gonna make it. Much easier to aim & hit with a shotgun. Very easy to aim & miss with a pistol.
It's not being fast or even accurate that count. It's being willing. Most men, because of cause or need, aren't willing. They blink an eye or draw a breath before they pull the trigger. I won't. - John Bernard Books.
Earp indeed had a sharp look & squint that was like an eagle sizing up prey. He certainly had the look of a serious & dangerous man with the courage to meet out justice to criminals.
I had read that a young John Wayne befriended Earp and learned from him the ways of the old west to which Wayne eventually developed into his legendary persona. So, in many ways, when you watched Wayne on the screen during his long and illustrious career in Hollywood, you were actually watching the personality and mannerisms of Wyatt Earp. I'd call that realism.
@craigbaxter4595 Several credible sources, including Wayne, John Ford, Harry Carey, and some others have said otherwise. They were both involved in Westerns in the 20's. Wayne's name was Marrion Morrison at that time. I've heard more yes's than no's on the subject. There were times that they both were on the same movie set at the same time.
Those people he learned from were also from the black powder period to where if you missed wasn't no easy reloading. Better to be accurate than fast and fucked if you miss.
I agree with everything he said. Take your time, no fancy stuff, carry so as to be quickly accessible. And I would add point your finger. No time to aim really.

The best way to win any gunfight is to not get into one. If you do, just seek cover and return fire as slowly and as accurately as you can, given the situation.
