- I vowed never to come back to the Ibis Budget after a less than good stay years ago but I’m all for second chances! What’s good / changed for the better and what’s changed for the worse? And when does ‘budget’ stop being budget?

And it absolutely did!
Glad you did this vlog, we were thinking of staying there, instead we booked Chilworth Manor, £225.00 b/b included car park and transfer from hotel to ship and back. We will be booking Chilworth again in March next year.

I have stayed in this hotel on two occasions as it is near to the Cruise terminal.
It is what it says a budget hotel so I didn't expect any luxuries.
The room was clean the sheets and towels were clean. The shower and toilet were basic but clean. Yes it was a bit hospital room like or a hostel.For an overnight stay it was good. Breakfast was limited but enough for me until I got to the ship.
The staff were friendly and helpful .
I would stay there again.
I paid about £38 for a night which was good for me as I only slept there and got a good night's sleep.

Great! Unfortunately the prices have rocketed and as I said, I didn’t expect any luxuries, obviously, I expected cleanliness. Budget does not mean dirty in my book (I’ve stayed in £12 hostels that were spotlessly clean).
We stayed there the night before our cruise. Was basic but done the job. Although we did ask for more pillows which never arrived.

Oh my days Jamie, we are so so glad you reviewed this ummm hotel. We need to book our precruise stay and we had just been looking and said "the price looks reasonable, its only a níght , it would probably be ok" ...heck no! Not after your review. Totally agree, cleanliness is the main thing we want and a comfy bed. We also were not impressed with the dope smoking right outside. Thank you Jamie!! This is why we love you! ❤

I stayed there last December before my QM2 cruise. My goodness, I haven’t experienced such a coldness anywhere and I live in Finland 😂 The staff was friendly. Really, I’ll think twice before stay there again.

Very informative as always. You pointed out the Novotel Hotel. Have you reviewed that one more fully please? My daughter and I are booked into it next May for a one-night pre-cruise stay. (Will have a search of your video library!)

Thank you for your honest reviews. I have a trip next May & June that requires a night stay in between several cruises, for a total of 5 nights. I've been watching all your Southampton videos, to ensure I don't make a poor booking decision. I've heard you say on many vlogs "SMELLY OL' Southampton" and wonder just "what" the smell is? Rotting vegetation, petroleum, etc?? Many ports have a certain aroma, but wondering if you could describe what you mean.
No smell unless you sail past the rubbish pit at the end of the docks
Thanks @travelblogjamie that's one crossed off our list! Last cruise we stayed in Winchester which proved to be a lovely night out and a morning of culture before heading into Southampton. Next year we have booked a guest house in Southampton with free parking etc with a short walk to the various eateries for the evening. Hope you have a lovely cruise, we are you off to this time?

I stayed in an Ibis budget once and we'd never do it again, i was 22 and sharing with my parents as we needed last minute and cheap for a funeral, i was in a bunk over the double bed (the bunk wasn't made up so had to do that first) and the glass shower in the shared bedroom was interesting when sharing with parents! It was one night, i was ill so i spent the night curled up on the floor outside of the toilet door so i didn't puke on my parents or disturb them climbing up and down the ladder. We all hated it and vowed never again to stay in an Ibis, didn't help we were in Sheffield and near the steelworks which is all we could hear all night. Honestly who thought a clear shower door was a good idea?!!!
Oh I hadn’t though about the logistics of sharing with family 😩

Oh I love being in Southampton so close to the ships though (especially as I get a quick train straight here too!).
Stayed there six years ago and it looks no better! Not felt brave enough to stay there since😂

I wouldn't stay in a Ibis Budget after my bf's experience ages ago. Daniel lives in Nuneaton and had been to an event at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and because of the time the event finished he missed the last train home to Nuneaton. He ended up searching for a hotel room online in Birmingham and the Ibis Budget was the only one that had a room available so he paid for it. The only room they had available was an accessible room. Like you mentioned about the mattress Daniel said the same thing about how thin and uncomfortable it was plus the bed in the accessible room was broken. Plus when Daniel had finished in the shower he walked into the bedroom the water was coming up through the carpet. (The accessible bathroom was a completely different setup from the standard room) it was a wetfloor bathroom so the water was somehow going through the wall. Daniel paid £200 for that one night and he vowed never to stop in an Ibis Budget again. We both said we would stay in either the normal Ibis or the Ibis Styles again.

Hi Jamie We call this alleged hotel in Southampton the " Detention Centre" I personally live & work near this Dive & can assure you Id rather sleep on a park bench than sleep in that hole. Enjoy Southampton it's not all that bad!

Stayed there 2 weeks ago prior to our latest cruise. Being boat show week they were £80 cheaper for the night than the next cheapest. (We booked back in January) Never again! Staff were good but just no no no.

Thanks for this review - I'll make sure I avoid it like the plague! Normally book the Novotel next door but now my youngest is 16 and there are 3 adults, it will cost use £500 for 1 night as we have to book 2 rooms! Any suggestions for an alternative?
Oh that’s a lot of money - must be a busy night. Premier inn can sleep 3 and maaaaybe Leonardo Harbour Hotel has a family room?

Hahahaha this was an extreme. We stayed one night in a Travelodge outside Northampton as a half way point to smelly Southampton. Now that was a challenge 😨😱. I'll give you the address and let you review that one 🤣

Only paid £70 for B& Breakfast for double room in Staffordshire for a Wedding , small but very clean lovely breakfast but too far to get to Cruise!!!

Are all the ibis budget hotels the same? We’ve only stayed in Birmingham and although basic, the food was delicious. Only gripe really was no tea and coffee facilities in the room.
There’s the standard Ibis (standard rooms or sweet rooms which are nice), and the I is budget which is featured in this vlog

We had the most fabulous stay at The Pig in the Wall. We’d definitely stay there again. lol
I’ve now stayed in nearly all hotels in Southampton - all in the name of research 😂 Pig in the wall is awesome.

Pig in the Wall is probably in one of our top 3 hotels in the U.K. It was that good. It made the start of a cruise so much more pleasurable. It was your review in a YT video that prompted me to book it. So thank you for that!
Seems like a fair bit of money for what looks a tad run down 😅 was thinking of booking this next year but... nah. It'll be the first cruise for the other 3 people I'm going with so think we'll spend a bit more for something a little nicer 😂😂

Never stay in the Travel Lodge on Lodge Rd.same price as you paid ..stayed there 2 weeks ago looked clean on the surface but not really cleaned well..No sleep noise inside and out side the hotel all night..

I've booked Premier Inn for next September for £120 (it's the first weekend of the boat show 😮) Can't afford Harbour Hotel at £325 unfortunately. Are there other options I should look at or stick with "does what it says on the tin" Premier Inn?
Premier Inn definitely better than Ibis Budget: otherwise Holiday Inn sometimes has a good deal

I stayed there for the night last year before watching the lion king show. Actually I thought it was really nice and pleasant stay but then again I've never been on a cruise so I suppose after cruising for years it makes your standards higher.
Oh I don’t think this is true at all - it was dirty - you don’t need to have high standards to know dirty is bad
I guess it must depend on staff it was clean for us.

We stayed in an Ibis budget hotel ONCE. Never used them again, there are better options out there.

I think it looks basic but fine and I have stayed in Ibis Budget in Manchester and Birmingham airport. However it depends on how much you paid for it. I find the London School of Economics accommodation in London similarly basic but perfectly adequate for a couple of nights.
If you paid more than £50 you were robbed otherwise I'd stay there.

Oh no. That was a lot of money. The hotels in Southampton seem to cost a fortune nowadays. I bet it made you look forward to Yacht Club even more! Were you not tempted to go back home and travel down in the morning?
I was tempted but didn’t fancy another £40 in travel costs (plus I had an early embarkation time - was there at 9.45am)

I’ve seen this place multiple times and thought it would be decent for the night, but hate when hotels like this still find it acceptable to charge a fortune just because they’re beside the terminal…!!

Looks too sparse for me we have stayed at the Holiday Inn near Ocean Terminal a few times we fly from Sydney so we like stay somewhere comfortable after a long flight.
