How To Fix Button on Suunto Core

  • If one of your buttons on your Suunto Core is no longer working the way it should, this video should be helpful for you. I disassemble my watch, fix it, and put it back together again. I mentioned you can get the silicon grease at a dive shop...but you can get it a lot of other places, including auto parts stores. Many people will probably be fine without adding the extra grease step, but I always add it when I crack open a watch seal. I don't repair watches for a living, but I do like to fix my own stuff. Please use this directions at your own risk. If you don't like what I did, or you don't think you want to try it... take it to someone who knows what they are doing. Heck... they'll probably tell you 50 things I did wrong!

I had this exact issue 3 years ago. I sent this back to Suunto and because it was out of warranty I’d have to replace the guts for $180. I opted not to and the watch went into the drawer. Since I’ve been wearing other watches or just using my phone for the time.
2 days ago I found it and decided to replace the battery battery. Out of nowhere I googled “Suunto core button doesn’t work”. I found this video and did followed it step by step. Watch works again and I’m super happy!! Thank you so much Sir!!! Cheers

Job well done! I’ve just ordered one of these, and I was concerned about the reviews with the buttons. I’m a watch nerd/enthusiast myself. Often find myself taking them apart/modding. Now if I ever have any button issues, I’ll be ahead of the game. Thanks for pointing out the O ring alignment. Most folks including myself would’ve probably just forced it in there incorrectly and end up with leaks.

I had the stuck button issue. My metal tabs were fine but the top right button was very hard to move when I had the case open. I tried working it some and it did get a little better. I decided to try a little of the silicone of it. I depressed the button and then on the inside of the case I used a toothpick to put a little on the button's shaft. Now working great.
    Thanks for the great video.

Great Video!! Note: my watch (also suunto core all black) had black trigger actuated buttons instead of the metal contacts in this video. Pretty much the same fix, but instead of bending the metal contacts back into place, I just worked the buttons themselves back and forth so that they would stop sticking. Also, i had to be careful when situating the computer of the watch back into the case because there is a small amount of wiggle room that can put extra space between the buttons and the black lever actuators. Great video, best of luck!

I've simply used a cheap oil similar to WD40 and small pliers to make the botton moving again without any disassembling. When it was good moving again I applied some grease (chain grease) to prevent it from getting stuck again. This should be done regularly.

Well my first thought about that button mechanism when you opened the watch was that it's practically a verry bad design for a watch in this price rate. The designers should have known that it's only a matter of time until spring tension is getting looser after pushing these buttons frequently.Using a contact plate in a fixt case with a little spring beneath it would have been a far more durable (but probably a more expensive) design.

Cheers. Thanks for this. My light button (bottom on right hand side) is the one that is dodgy for me. I got a bit of action back by using WD40 (the answer to many things). But I'll give this a go.
I notice that, like everyone, the paint on the bezel on your Suunto Core has chipped away. It looks crappy, I have tried a few things to touch mine up. Black permanent pen (e.g. Sharpie) lasts hours or days - a waste of time. I then tried automotive touch up paint - really thought this would be a winner! Alas, it only lasts weeks. I thought the bond would be better given that automotive paint is designed to bond to metal and the bezel is metal. So I was disappointed. Out of frustration, I decided to use nail polish to cover the unsightly scratched metal rim, thinking it couldn't look worse. To my amazement it lasted quite well; many weeks to months!! I have now bought some black nail polish for most of the bezel. But I like to do the top edge of the bezel in a brighter colour (usually purple). It gives it a great stand out individual look. You need a steady hand, and you can wipe off any slips/mistakes. Very available solvent for nail polish (acetone) which you can get as 'nail polish remover' so it's an apt concentration. Endless colours available to suit anyone's whim and creativity.

Thanks for your video!: I just fixed my Suunto Core and the Suunto Lumi of my wife as both failed by this central button issue. What a shame of bad design for a so expensive watches! The Suunto Lumi has to be opened by the back (not the front), but the internal buttons are similar, so I fixed both.

My Suunto Core had the same problem, but before I disassembled it I tried spraying silicon grease into the buttons as I noticed that the water sealing on this watch was via small "O" rings I have found that these "dry out" and stick the silicon spray lubes the "O" ring and has fix the problem on my watch. FYI you my need to spray it a few times and you will need to get the button moving to get it to return, you will also need to repeat this every few months.

I bought this watch a few years ago and appreciate your video. When I opened it up, there are no metal button contacts but instead the buttons are just little bolts with washers on the inside that depress small black plastic switches. The washers are those little split lock washers and as far as I can tell they are the sole source of the spring force used to restore the buttons to their unpressed position. They have basically stopped doing that, and I cannot fix them. Poor design for a relatively pricey watch in my opinion.
Just posting this here in case anyone else has this alternative design to their Suunto Core.

I fixed mine Suunto Core Gold, didn't use silicone though simply 'cause I dodn't have it. You could have gone a little bit more into detail how to actually do the very thing that I am here for - how to split or twist or separate those tabs.. but never the less, I fixed it and works like new! Btw, I twisted mine, it just gives it a little more distance and less pressing the button. Thanks.
