This was 3 months before the USSR was no more. This was September 1991. Gorbachev lowered the hammer & sickle flag from the Kremlin for the last time December 25, 1991 & replaced it with the 3 color flag. This was the 1st western culture event in Russia in 5 years. 'For Those About To Rock: Monsters In Moscow' as part of the Monsters of Rock Tour. Artists were: Metallica, Pantera, AC/DC, The Black Crowes & E.S.T.. The military were going to cancel the show almost right before people started showing up. But for fear of revolt, they didn't. They expected 500,000. It was estimated at 1.6million. Crowd Scan had since tried to do an accurate count using video footage. They settled on 1.6million but said it was most likely a little more than that.
1.6 Million people....and this is only 3rd on the all time list of crowds at an open air concert. #1 is Rod Stewart at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with a crowd of 3.5 Million in 1994. #2 was Jean Michel Jarre in 1997 also in Russia, like that Metallica show, with 3.5 Million.

The thing is, Metallica has such joy in their performance and such energy that you don't need the kind of theatrics that Rammstein and others employ (very well). Though it's not like Metallica doesn't do show-biz, either. The first time I saw them in '96 the stage seemed to collapse and a burning guy ran across the stage, but that was just some icing...

Metallica all day everyday!! Priest is good but nothing like Metallica!! After a while Metallica becomes hypnotic.
My first Metallica show was their Master of Puppets tour when they opened for Ozzy. Cliff was still alive and while Moscow was crazy, as a hungry opening act, they were insane and the crowd when further off the deep end. Craziest show o was ever at and I should have been afraid for my life.
They talk about it in “When Metallica ruled the World”. Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum! I quote, the crowd looked like a pack of piranha feeding on a ham!!

Yea the Russian military who were policing this event were accused of a lot of bad things that day. I've heard somewhere around 50 deaths and multiple rapes occurred in that massive crowd.

I'm not sure if anyone explained the history of this show to you before, but this show was a few months before the fall of the Soviet Union. It was after the August Coup, which was a failed military takeover. Tensions were high so the Russian government contacted Monsters of Rock to have a free show in Moscow. The headliners were Metallica, Pantera, and AC/DC. Metallica's is the most remembered one because of how the military there didn't understand what a 'release' was at a concert. Since they were a closed country they did not understand why all of these people were going crazy and went around beating people in the crowd. Metallica being on stage and playing their music, did not notice this going on during their set. It's said that an estimate of 53 people died at this show (I just looked it up). Also the number of people at the show is a wild estimate, it could be anywhere from 500,000 to 1,600,000. Due to all of this history and craziness that went on, this is one of the most historic concerts ever...So for the broken bones question, there were definitely a crazy amount of broken bones at this specific show.

Ok wow...Judas Priest or Metallica...that's a tough one. Judas Priest was actually my introduction to metal waaayyy back when! My 1st metal album was Judas Priest Unleashed In The East...a live album btw!So I do have a soft spot for them. However...if I must choose only one for the rest of my life...gotta go with Metallica! *Be sure to pull up the lyrics with each one. Metal is a form of lyrical art that is best appreciated when you analyze and understand the meaning of each song. IMO it’s best to start with studio versions, as some live versions are messed with by the bands and if you aren’t familiar with the song or it’s meaning, it can loose some of its ability to convey its true meaning/definition of the song when it’s done more casually in a live setting. Just a thought.. Best of luck in your metal journey!

Definitely Metallica, Judas Priest is just one step behind in evolution:) it's like comparing black powder colt peacemaker and colt 1911, both are iconic, but One is just as relevant today as it was on the release date... Judas Priest is little bit outdated now, and Metallica is foundation of modern Metal music.

Metallica hands down my all time favorite band. So it’s an easy choice for me.

I'm pretty sure well over 100 people died during the festival.

Once you’ve gotten 1.6 million Russians to scream “die” I think you’ve reached the top in life

I don't know how many people broke a bone at this concert like you asked but I do know that 60 people died. Mostly from drug overdoses

Metallica man... The first four albums were fucking awesome masterpieces! Had the influence of Cliff Burton, which brought those dynamics to the sound. Then they were out of Cliff assisted songs after his unfortunate death and Jason Newsted was in the band, as he is here. Great bassist but no personal contribution at ALL, just wanted to play along with the guitars. So a bunch of increasingly crappy albums ensued, until Rob Trujillo entered the picture. After that each album has become increasingly better again, with Rob bringing his own dynamics to the table and giving Metallica a sharp, awesome new sound which I love.

Unrelated but I really would like you to do a reaction to Ball of Confusion by the Temptations. It is pure fire. Please trust me.
