I was absolutely rivetted to this documentary. What a great champion of truth Jan Huss was, and what incredible courage he showed standing up to the Catholic church. He held his ground on his irrefutable points of contention "show me where in the Scriptures I am in error", and endured a horrific death. I don't know if I'd be so brave in his situation. I hope that I would. The Queen of Bohemia reminds me of Queen Katherine Parr, with her intellect and that she was drawn to the truth of Protestantism. I didn't know anything about Jan Huss before watching this, but I look forward to seeing him in heaven, and cheering for his faithfulness to the Lord Jesus when he stands before Him at the Bema Seat of Christ, and receives his rewards. The Popes on the whole were a disgrace. Those who weren't corrupt were mysteriously unalived. I was given Dave Hunt's book 'A Woman Rides the Beast' for Christmas, and it's engrossing. It describes the woman in scarlet riding the Beast in the book of Revelation....and I can't see how it's not the Catholic church.... she's drunk on the blood of the saints. Awesome presentation. I wish you had included more nuance about indulgences. Indulgences did not prevent someone from going to hell. They provided a pool of merit that would shorten time in purgatory and thus speed up someone’s journey to paradise. The distinction is important. Under the Roman system, the mass, obedience to the pope and magistrates of the church, baptism, confession, professed faith in Jesus and good works were all necessary for salvation. but various other things could earn merit (such as buying indulgences).

Queen Anne of England, daughter of Charles IV and sister of Wenceslas IV, brought her Bible translated into Czech to England (this translation was initiated by her father Charles IV) and wanted to learn English from the Bible translated into English, but such a translation did not exist, so she initiated it and, among other things, became a protector of John Wycliffe. At the same time, she initiated an exchange of students between Oxford and Prague universities, which led to the transfer of John Wycliffe's ideas to Prague, where the ground was prepared for this thanks to the spiritual awakening in the time of Charles IV (the Waldensian exiles from France and Italy, reformers from Austria, Bavaria and Saxony, home preachers and an even older tradition of piety from the time of Great Moravia were heading here). Prague was then one of the largest cities in Europe, among other things it was larger than London (but Kutná Hora was also larger than London). After the death of John Wycliffe, the Lollards, followers of John Wycliffe, headed to Prague - one of them, Peter Payne, became an important Hussite and significantly participated in the documents defining the Hussite movement and their transmission to, among others, Sigismund of Luxembourg. The subsequent Hussite movement led to great economic damage, but it also brought Protestant ideas leading to a great economic boom in the Czech lands in the 16th century (the Renaissance period - Prague, under Rudolf II, even doubled in population compared to the time of Charles IV and had 100 thousand inhabitants and still remained one of the largest European cities). This spiritual foundation (emphasis on morality, education, justice, hard work and equality of men and women), at the origin of which, among others, the Hussites stood, then also led to a great economic boom in the 19th century (when the surrounding countries, such as Bavaria and Austria, untouched by the Reformation to such an extent, remained poor until the 20th century).
You forget something if you study a Religion and your Teachers convince you that it is evil quoting this and that document. Yet, if you ask many of the simple uneducated members of that Religion how to interpret their Religion many times they make something up in their ignorance that is actually better and superior to what their Religion officials teaches. I have seen this over and over again.

A few comments. Indulgences, even in their worst abusive form, never got you out of hell. They shortened time in purgatory, conditional on the fact that you had already made a valid confession (which requires repentance) and received absolution. As far as only believing/practicing what is expressly stated in scripture: 1) the undivided Christian Church existed before the New Testament was compiled. You might say the Church wrote the scriptures, or at least decided which books were scripture and which were not. Scripture was never intended to be a catechism of all of the beliefs and practices of the Church. Consider John 16: "“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. However, when the Spirit of truth has come, He will guide you into all truth," so Jesus is saying there is more truth than contained in the scriptures and fuller truth will be revealed by the Holy Spirit, 2) The idea that the meaning of scripture is "obvious" to any reasonably educated reader is refuted by the hundreds of Protestant sects that exist. The "Hussites" themselves ended up breaking into many other groups that were not in agreement with one another. At some point you cannot have unity without a single interpretive body that everyone agrees is authoritative. As far as each national Church having its own head vs one centralized head (eg., the Pope), it's worked reasonably well -- although far from perfectly -- with the Eastern Orthodox. (Although the patriarch of Constantinople is primus inter pares and has special authority that the other Churches lack.) As far as Hus's idea that that national head should be under the control of the king --- uh, not a very good idea. Unless you like the idea of Putin running the Russian Orthodox Church
