A small but significant childhood incident of Ustad Bahadur Khan:
Ustad Bahadur Hossain Khan. This legendary musician was born in Shibpur village of Brahmanbaria. His father was Ustad Ayet Ali Khan. He moved to Brahmanbaria with his family for livelihood. Young Bahadur grew up here. His passion for music was probably a little too much. He started practicing Sarode from a very young age. While still in primary school, his Sarode playing in school events already made him popular in the vicinity. But young Bahadur was not less active when it came to playing with friends. In 1940, when Bahadur was just ten/eleven years old, one afternoon, he met with an accident. At that time there were only a handful of horse-drawn carriages in the town. Sometimes they used to pass through the street in front of their house. There used to be a little footrest hanging at the rear of the car, where the luggage was usually kept. Unseen by the passengers, youngstars used to step on it and had a little ride. The smaller ones, who could not stand up on the platform, enjoyed the free ride for a short distance by hanging on their stomachs, although it was riskier. One day, on his way from school, young Bahadur stepped into that footrest. But he was unlucky. His foot accidentally went through the wheel. His shin bone was broken. With the help of people around, Bahadur was brought home by a rickshaw. Bahadur was in great pain. At that time, the only physician available in the town was Doctor Kusum. Ayet Ali Khan got the news of his son’s accident and ran to call the doctor. Kusumbabu came immediately after getting the news. He bandaged and plastered Bahadur's leg. But the leg was not to be cured easily. Bahadur was in bed for full five months. He could not go anywhere, let alone go to school. It was at that time that Bahadur completely devoted himself to music. Meanwhile, there happened to be a musical event in the school. Many distinguished guests were supposed to attend. At that time no school event could be considered complete without Bahadur. So, he was carried all the way from home to the stage with his whole leg plastered. Young Bahadur, as usual, wowed everyone with his sarod playing, keeping his plastered legs rested straight on the stage. After his leg got better, he requested his father if he could go to uncle ‘Sursamrat’ Ustad Alauddin Khan’s place in Maihar to focus more on music. Ayet Ali did not stop him. It was destiny that took him there. Later he moved to Kolkata to look after Alauddin Khan's music shop 'Alam Brothers' in Kolkata. Ustad Bahadur Khan remained in Kolkata for the rest of his life.

Thank you so much for this narrative, Tareef (मैं आपकी भी तारीफ़ करना चाहता हूँ !); it is wonderful to learn more about the lives of such outstanding people. Incidentally I recommend Alauddin Khan sahib's own book मेरी कथा (published by Rajkamal in Delhi) in which he describes his experiences about joining the Maihar court - and other things. An idiosyncratic, lively, and from-the-heart story!

Very delicate and intricate playing...The drut is very well measured, unlike what is seen in today's madness circus to which even great masters have succumbed...
And who is the tabla player ? Listen how he makes his entry at 12:35, definitely one of the most fluid, finest, sanghat oriented tabla start I've ever got to listen to.

Darbari is a deep Raag of grandeur and godliness and inner strength. If there is any element of the sentiment of sorrow it is only to offset and show up the other sentiments of grandeur. This is what should have been played up more.

@@jensenlewis631 I know what I wrote is unpleasant and sad, but unfortunately, I saw it with my own eyes. Sometimes the truth hurts. I am indebted to Bahadur Khan for the knowledge that he shared with me. I don't mention his alcoholism to disparage him. It was unfortunately quite evident to anyone who actually knew him. If his son doesn't acknowledge it, he is in denial, a common symptom of addicts, and those who love them.
