They never knew what Kenny was going to do next so it's their genuine reaction. In the end they just gave up trying to stifle their laughter and left it in the show.

I vividly remember Kenny and Freddie. Just sheer joy. But what I had forgotten, was Kenny’s own contribution to ‘alternative comedy’s ascension. There he is mocking the stereotypical Working men’s club comedian material, and he also had a pop at Benny Hill’s racial stereotypes. So it wasn’t just the Young Ones, Comic Strip and Not theNine O’clock news.
I believe Billy Banter the character in the light blue suit at the beginning is an impression of Bernard Manning, who even back in the 80's and 90's was criticised by many who felt his humour was based on discriminatory stereotypes.
He seems to a parody of Bernard Manning. 70's era stand-up comedian who's jokes largely focussed on mocking women & minorities and generally punching down. It was his style of comedy that alternative comedy was reacting against.
